Abstract: A tape drive for use with a tape cartridge having a cartridge leader includes a drive body, a take-up reel supported by the drive body, and a drive leader connected to the take-up reel. The tape drive further includes a leader connecting mechanism for connecting the drive leader to the cartridge leader, and an elevator assembly configured to receive the tape cartridge and to position the tape cartridge with respect to the drive body. The elevator assembly is also configured to actuate the leader connecting mechanism.

Abstract: A method and system for retrieving data that is stored on a backup or secondary storage system located at a remote location to a local storage system. Restoring of backup data involves the transferring of a point-in-time copy of primary system data from a secondary storage system to the local system. The point-in-time copy is created on the secondary system using an asynchronous remote copy scheme. The point-in-time copy that is restored may be either an entire volume or portions thereof.
Abstract: An optical disk device of the present invention has a main PC board carrying a semiconductor element and attached at the rear of a drawer to efficiently dissipate a heat generated from the semiconductor element. The drawer is formed of a material having good thermal conductivity. A thermal conductive member having good thermal conductivity is interposed between the IC desired to be dissipate heat and the drawer.
Abstract: An optical disk drive is provided with an optical pickup and an optical sensor. The optical pickup is used for reading main information from an optical disk. The optical sensor is located in the range of R17 to R23 and used for reading sub information from the optical disk. The optical sensor is provided in relation to the center of a spindle motor used for rotating the optical disk and is located within 120° with respect to the radius that is 180° opposite to the radius along which the optical pickup is movable.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a thin-film read element for use in reading magnetic signals from a device. The read element includes a first thin-film read sensor and a second thin-film read sensor that are each configured to convert the magnetic signals of the device to electrical signals.

Abstract: A safety system for online servicing of a media library is provided, wherein the library comprises a plurality of media storage cells and at least one media picker robot that moves along the media storage cells, and wherein the library is contained within an enclosure having at least one access means. The safety system detects whether the access means in the enclosure is open or closed and operates the robot in the media library in one of two corresponding modes. If the access means is closed, the robot operates in a normal mode at a first specified speed. If the access means is open, the robot operates in a safe mode at a second specified speed that is slower then the first speed of the normal mode. In another embodiment, while in safe mode, the picker robot is excluded from moving within a restricted zone in the library.

Abstract: A multilayered ferromagnetic laminate includes a first magnetic film having a cobalt alloy and a second magnetic film having an iron-nitrogen alloy. The films are deposited upon one another and laminated to provide a multilayered film structure having an alternating plurality of the first and second magnetic films. The cobalt alloy may be a cobalt-zirconium-tantalum alloy. The nitrogen is incorporated interstitially in the crystalline structure of the iron of the second magnetic film. The laminate forms the magnetic shields and the write poles of magnetic disk and tape heads. The lamination of the first magnetic film which has high electrically resistive, high mechanical hardness, and high magnetic moment characteristics with the second magnetic film which has lower electrically resistive and very high magnetic moment characteristics yields the laminate which has very high magnetic moment and very hard pole material characteristics and has the ability to write at high frequencies.
Abstract: A tape cartridge for use with a tape drive having an actuation member includes a cartridge body that is insertable into the tape drive. The cartridge body includes first and second faces that extend at an angle to each other. The first face has a first opening and the second face has a second opening. The cartridge further includes a door movably associated with the cartridge body and being engageable with the actuation member when the cartridge body is inserted into the tape drive. The door is pivotable between a closed position and an open position upon engagement with the actuation member. Furthermore, the door has first and second portions that at least partially cover the first and second openings, respectively, when the door is in the closed position.

Abstract: A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag system includes a coupler/controller subsystem and a memory. The coupler/controller subsystem wirelessly receives and transmits at least one user signal and at least one master signal. The memory is electrically coupled to the coupler/controller subsystem. The memory includes a user portion for storing information contained in the at least one user signal and a master portion for storing information contained in the at least one master signal, and the master portion of the memory is unalterable by a user.

Abstract: A computer peripheral system is provided that include at least one fluid cooled blade. The fluid cooled blade is formed by first and second walls that are secured together to form a fluid flow path. A supply of cooling fluid is connected to an inlet port to supply cooling fluid to the fluid flow path. An outlet port is connected to the fluid flow path that directs fluid to a fluid outlet. The fluid cooled blade is assembled to the rack in close proximity to the electronic modules that require cooling. In one embodiment, the fluid cooled blade may be laminated or otherwise connected to one or more electronic circuit boards.
Abstract: A tape guide is provided for use in routing a tape media, used in a computer or other application, along a pre-specified path of travel. The tape guide is oriented along a vertical axis and comprises three sections or components joined together to form an integral guide structure. An upper section is provided with a concave surface that curves upward to a circular edge around the top of the guide. The guide also includes a cylindrical central section, and a frustoconical lower section having its smaller-diameter end contiguous with the cylindrical section. Thus, the lower section provides a tapered outer surface extending downwardly from the central section. A tape is wrapped around the guide, whereby the tape is directed along its path of travel. As the tape moves along its path of travel, the curved upper section and tapered frustoconical section apply downwardly directed and upwardly directed biasing forces, respectively.
Abstract: A system of rollers and guides that adjust a wrap angle of tape around a guide in a tape cartridge. The system of rollers is an outer guide and an inner roller connected to a spindle via rigid arms. The tape extends around the reel and around a portion of the outer diameter of the outer guide. The inner roller rolls against the tape pack as the tape is wound or unwound around the reel. As the radius of the tape pack changes, position of the inner roller relative to the reel changes, causing the spindle to rotate. In turn, the rotation of the spindle causes a change in the position of the outer guide relative to the reel. As outer guide moves inwardly or outwardly relative to the reel, the wrap angle of the tape around the outer guide changes.
