Patent number: 7037433Abstract: Systems and methods for polymer addition control for sludges from water and wastewater treatment. In a treatment process where flocculating agents are used to promote solids aggregation, intrinsic physical properties of the liquid rich stream following separation may be continuously measured in order to control or optimize the amount of flocculating or treatment agent that is added to the process. These intrinsic physical properties may include, for example, the flocculating suspension or network strength. By determining the floc strength using various treating agent dosages, a optimum treating agent dose can be determined. The optimum treating agent dosage is the minimum in a floc strength to polymer dose curve.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2005Date of Patent: May 2, 2006Assignees: Duke University, Stranco, Inc.Inventors: Mohammad Abu-Orf, Banu Ormeci

Patent number: 5338779Abstract: Polymer activation apparatus for activating a batch of dry polymer in dilution water includes a tank which contains the dilution water in a mixing vessel and a mixing assembly within the mixing vessel. The dilution water is circulated at a high rate through the mixing assembly to create a high shear flow condition within the mixing assembly. The polymer is introduced into the mixing assembly to disperse the polymer in the dilution water and form a slurry in the vessel without causing agglomeration of the dry polymer. After dispersion and before hydration of the polymer, the rate of circulation through the mixing assembly is reduced to create a low shear flow condition. The low shear condition is maintained as the viscosity of the solution increases.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1992Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Stranco, IncInventor: Carl L. Brazelton

Patent number: 5141324Abstract: The visual monitoring apparatus includes a transparent tube section with coupling flanges at each end for coupling to adjacent conduit sections carrying a stream of conditioned sludge which includes agglomerated solid bodies. Control rods extend between the coupling flanges to strengthen the tube. A strobe light is mounted in a housing which is mountable alongside the tube and closely conforms to the shape thereof for confining the strobe light to a predetermined area of the tube and isolating that area from ambient light. The housing accommodates the control rods therethrough and contains a mirror which directs light reflected from the illuminated contents of the tube along a viewing path through a view port in the housing which is closed by a door or hatch. The frequency of the strobe can be adjusted to correspond to the flow rate of the fluid in the tube for creating the visual impression of substantially stopping the movement of the solid bodies in the tube.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1990Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Assignee: Stranco, Inc.Inventors: Frank L. Patent number: 4778280Abstract: The mixing apparatus includes a centrifugal pump having a casing and an impeller located therein. The casing has a axially extending tubular inlet located centrally on its end wall, the discharge being a tubular projection on the side wall's casing. A second casing substantially identical to the casing of the pump, has a tubular projection on one of its end walls coupled to the inlet of the first mentioned casing. Water is delivered to a tubular projection on the side wall of the second casing. Particulate polymer is delivered to the other end wall of the second casing. The swirling water in the second casing creates a lower pressure at its discharge to draw the polymer downwardly and into the first casing where it is vigorously mixed with the water.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1986Date of Patent: October 18, 1988Assignee: Stranco, Inc.Inventor: Carl L. Patent number: 4688945Abstract: Dry polymer is fed from a hopper into the funnel-shaped path of a mixing structure which has upper and lower nozzle portions cooperating to define a frustoconical nozzle opening or eductor which provides communication between the path and a surrounding annular chamber. Water is delivered along the side of the chamber so that it swirls through the nozzle opening and is ejected into the funnel-shaped path in a conical swirling stream which mixes with dry powder falling along the path and forms a Venturi to draw the powder along the path. The swirling mixture is injected into the top of a vertical rotating tube which extends down into a container and carries an elongated hollow impeller at its lower end. The water polymer mixture is further mixed in the tube and sprayed through the impeller into an upper mixing compartment of the container. Liquid is drawn through openings in the bottom of the impeller to facilitate the mixing action.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1985Date of Patent: August 25, 1987Assignee: Stranco, Inc.Inventors: Carl L.
