Abstract: Described herein are systems, methods, and techniques for spatially-aware displays for computer-assisted interventions. A Fixed View Frustum technique renders computer images on the display using a perspective based on a virtual camera having a field-of-view facing the display and automatically updates the virtual position of the virtual camera in response to adjusting the pose of the display. A Dynamic Mirror View Frustum technique renders computer images on the display using a perspective based on a field-of-view of a virtual camera that has a virtual position behind the display device. The virtual position of the virtual camera is dynamically updated in response to movement of a user's viewpoint located in front of the display device. Slice visualization techniques are also described herein for use with the Fixed View Frustum and Dynamic Mirror View Frustum techniques.

Abstract: A technique for determining a transformation between a navigation reference coordinate system (302) for navigation of a surgical device (150) relative to patient image data and an image coordinate system (304) in which the patient image data define a shape of a patient surface is provided. A computer-implemented method implementation of that technique comprises receiving multiple data sets that have been taken from different perspectives of the patient surface. Feature coordinates of multiple features (170) identifiable in the picture data sets are determined from the picture data sets and in the navigation reference coordinate system (302). From the feature coordinates, a shape model of the patient surface in the navigation reference coordinate system (302) is determined.

  • Patent number: 9202387
Abstract: A system and method for planning volumetric treatment by percutaneous needle procedures obtains a volumetric image data set of a subject including an identifiable region requiring treatment. An effective treatment volume is defined relative to the needle position for at least one needle carrying a treatment applicator. One or more proposed inserted needle position is defined such that a effective treatment volume corresponding to the one or more proposed inserted needle position provides coverage of the region requiring treatment. The effective treatment volume for one or more needles can then be visualized in the context of slices of 3D image data. One or more entry point and corresponding virtual target are then defined relative to a frame of reference of the volumetric image data set for use in navigation of the at least one needle to the corresponding proposed inserted needle position.

  • Publication number: 20140364860
Abstract: A bending instrument for a surgical element has two branches or arms which are pivotable relative to one another. A bending punch and two counter members are provided. The counter members interact with the bending punch to deform the surgical element. • Publication number: 20140343557
Abstract: A technique for generating a data set that geometrically defines a bone cut configuration for transverse maxillary distraction is using a computer-implemented method. An aspect of the technique comprises creating a numeric model of a maxilla based on patient-specific data of the maxilla. The numeric model is representative of mechanical properties of the maxilla. Based on the numeric model thus generated, one or more cut configurations for one or more bone cuts on at least one of a left hand side and a right hand side of the maxilla are determined. Each cut configuration has been determined to compensate for asymmetric mechanical properties of the maxilla. In a further step, a data set indicative of the one or more cut configurations thus determined is generated. The data set may be used to create a surgical template or jig, for computer-assisted surgery or a surgical navigation system.

  • Publication number: 20140094694
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for relating additional spatial information associated with one volume data set of an anatomical structure with another volume data set of the anatomical structure where the spatial information is not available. A unique spatial characteristic of the volume data set is identified, such as an image moment of inertia, and an arbitrary reference frame is assigned to the volume data set and correlated with the unique spatial characteristic. The additional spatial information is also correlated with the arbitrary reference frame. The additional spatial information is then correlated to a second volume data set of the anatomical structure by registering the first and second volume data sets based on the unique spatial characteristic. The methods and systems allow registration of different volume data sets of the same anatomical structure and transfer of the additional spatial information without establishing a local reference frame based on predefined landmarks.
