Abstract: Once participants participate in a video conference the state of information during that video conference is retained for those participants. At a future time, when those participants again meet in a video conference the state of information that was retained is retrieved and presented for them again in the subsequent video conference based upon their identifiers. Information such as the whiteboard, the chat window, shared files, camera settings, images, background, video recording, etc. are retrieved and automatically presented in the new video conference. Alternatively, a participant may be asked if the state of information from a previous video conference should be retrieved. When a participant joins a conference, the current participants grant permission or not for the current contents to be viewed by the new participant. When a participant leaves the conference, or when they all leave, a triggering condition saves the state.

Data describing each drawing action upon the shared whiteboard is sent to a database server and each action is then distributed to all users to update their whiteboards. Screenshots of the drawing actions are created by emulating a browser and inputting data describing each action from the database. Alternatively, screenshots are taken by each user computer (after each action or periodically) and sent to the recording server. Audiovisual manipulation software is used to create a whiteboard video from the screenshots are then combined with the audio and video streams to create a resulting video of the entire session. A video clip is created simply by sending begin and end timestamps during the session.

Each computer sends to the server participant metadata including a role for each computer (e.g., “tutor” or “student”) and streaming information to facilitate streaming between other computers. The server sends the participant metadata to all other computers in the session. A computer decides to subscribe to a video stream of another computer only if that other computer has a role of “tutor.” The tutor computer subscribes to video streams from all student computers. A peer-to-peer communication platform such as WebRTC facilitates communications between computers but does not pass any video or audio streams via the central computer. The tutor computer subscribes to students who are speaking. A student computer subscribes to a video stream from another student computer if the download and upload speeds respectively are above a certain threshold.

Access by the student account is blocked if any course codes for delivered content are incompatible with either database. Another database records videos watched via a student account. If a threshold number of relatively long videos are watched in a short time period then access by the student account is blocked.
