  • Patent number: 4310084
Abstract: A fluid friction clutch especially for powering a rotary cooling fan for an internal combustion engine. The clutch has a driven part with a drive disc rotating in a drive chamber which is separated from a fluid reservoir chamber by a separating wall within the clutch housing. A passage in the separating wall can be opened and closed by a valve assembly which is actuated by a temperature-dependent element. The temperature-dependent element is an expansion element containing a substance which undergoes volume changes as a function of temperature. The expansion element is heated electrically by means of a PTC resistor under the control of a thermal switch which reacts to engine-related temperatures. When the power supply to the PTC heater is interrupted, the clutch engages and provides full cooling power.

  • Patent number: 4273681
Abstract: A support matrix for a catalytic reactor for scrubbing exhaust gases in an internal combustion engine, composed of layers of alternating steel panels at least some of which are coated with a catalyzer and at least one of which is corrugated so as to form flow channels for the exhaust gases. In order to increase the turbulence of the flow in the channels of the matrix, the smooth panel and/or the corrugated panel is subdivided into narrow strips which lie adjacent to one another and are encountered sequentially by the inflowing exhaust gas. Furthermore, the exhaust gases which are divided into small streams may recombine between the strips and thus encounter renewed admixture. They are then redivided in the subsequent strip resulting in an overall intensive contact of each gas stream thread with a surface of the subsequent narrow strip, thereby substantially improving the catalytic efficiency.

  • Patent number: 4270641
Abstract: A fluid friction clutch, especially for driving the cooling fan of an internal combustion engine. The rotating clutch housing has a separating wall defining a fluid reservoir chamber and a drive chamber and the separating wall has a passage which is opened and closed by a valve. The valve is actuated by an electromagnet disposed substantially coaxially with the clutch. A permanent magnet is attached to the valve assembly coaxially with the electromagnet and of opposite polarity to the magnetic field polarity which occurs when the electromagnet is energized. Upon energization, the opposing magnetic fields repel the two magnets and cause the valve to close, thereby disengaging the clutch. When the electromagnetic is deenergized, a spring reopens the valve and permits full engagement of the clutch.

  • Patent number: 4240580
Abstract: A temperature dependent electronic control switch, especially suited for an automatic temperature control in vehicles, including one or more NTC resistors as sensors in a bridge circuit, an amplifier, to amplify the signals from the sensors, a solenoid for producing a variable magnetic field from signals received by the amplifier, an iron strip, an air nozzle connected to a vacuum, a servomotor connected between the air nozzle and the vacuum, and a control flap. The iron strip, moving in response to the magnetic field from the solenoid, obstructs an opening in the air nozzle, thereby changing the pressure felt by the servomotor and thereby causing the control flap of an air-conditioner or heater to move in a predetermined manner to mix air of different temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4159741
Abstract: A passage is provided in a heat exchanger water compartment to permit expansion of a tube following its introduction into the bottom of the compartment. The heat exchanger is constructed so that a parameter K.sub.1 is in the range of 1.2 to 8. This parameter is equal to the length of the surface in contact between the tube and the passage multiplied by the ratio of the thickness of the bottom to the thickness of the tube wall, and the ratio of the tensile strength of the bottom material to the tensile strength of the tube material.
