  • Patent number: 8274184
Abstract: A torus motor system includes a hollow stator and a rotor which is driven along a rotor path formed within the hollow stator by a magnet system. The rotor operates as a piston within the rotor path to intake and discharge fluid therefrom. The forces on the rotor all tend to center the rotor within the rotor path. The rotor is accelerated away from the inlet port on the magnet system and decelerated as the rotor approaches the discharge port.

  • Patent number: 7759828
Abstract: A motor driven compressor assembly includes a motor housing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. A motor is disposed within the motor housing and includes a rotor that is coupled to a rotatable shaft and a stator. Several passages fluidly connect the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet. One passage is located radially outward of the stator and another passage extends through the rotatable shaft. A compressor is in fluid communication with the fluid outlet of the motor housing. Operation of the compressor produces a fluid stream through the motor housing. The fluid stream transfers heat away from the motor to cool the motor.

  • Patent number: 7334428
Abstract: A compressor system has a compression stage, a coolant circuit and a refrigerant circuit. The compression stage compresses ambient air and generates compressed air and heat. A coolant removes heat from the compression stage and the heat is transferred from the coolant to a refrigerant. A refrigerant expansion device is incorporated into the refrigerant circuit. The expansion device expands the pressurized refrigerant utilizing a rotary expander. Energy generated during refrigerant expansion is captured and used to drive components of the cooling system.

  • Patent number: 5456582
Abstract: A compressor has an air inlet valve for controlling air intake when demand for service air from the compressor changes. The valve has a housing with an inlet and an outlet which is connected to a compressor. A rod in the housing is movable relative to the housing and has a shoulder and a piston. A movable valve member is mounted on the rod and a spring is interposed between the piston and the housing for moving the shoulder into engagement with the valve member and biasing the valve member toward the closed position. The housing has a chamber on each side of the piston for receiving air that discharges from the compressor. Air pressure is connected to one of the chambers to move the valve member toward the closed position when the pressure of air in the receiver tank exceeds a set-point.

  • Patent number: 5388967
Abstract: A start control for a compressor has an air inlet valve for reducing flow intake when a compressor is started. The valve has a housing with an inlet and an outlet which is connected to a compressor. A rod in the housing is movable relative to the housing and has a shoulder and a piston. A movable plate is mounted on the rod and a spring is interposed between the plate and the housing for biasing the plate toward a closed position in which the housing inlet is at least partially closed. A second spring is interposed between the piston and the housing for moving the shoulder into engagement with the plate and biasing the plate toward the closed position. The housing has a chamber on each side of the piston for receiving air that discharges from the compressor. Air pressure applied to one side of the piston assists the first spring and the second spring move the plate toward the closed position when the compressor is in a start mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 5246349
Abstract: A motor driven compressor is provided with a means through which the internal portion of the motor is maintained at a pressure below atmospheric pressure when the compressor is operating. This reduced pressure within the motor reduces the windage losses of the motor and reduces the noise generated which as a result emanates from the motor. The present invention is most suitable for use in association with a variable reluctance motor connected in torque provided relation with a screw compressor, wherein the screw compressor is utilized as a vacuum pump. The internal portion of the motor is connected in fluid communication with the suction port of the vacuum pump and this association reduces the pressure within the motor and reduces both the windage losses and the noise emanating from the motor.

  • Patent number: 5222874
Abstract: A combination of a variable reluctance motor and a screw compressor is provided with a fluid management system that directs a portion of the lubricant flow through the variable reluctance motor to cool its stator laminations and windings. Another portion of the lubricant flow is caused to pass directly from a heat exchanger to the screw compressor. The first portion of flow, which passes through the variable reluctance motor, is then directed into fluid communication with the inlet of the screw compressor to lubricate the screw compressor and provide cooling for the compressor. The portion of lubricant flow passing directly through the heat exchanger to the compressor also provides lubrication for the compressor and is used to further cool the moving parts of the screw compressor.

  • Patent number: 5096598
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved purging of a liquid drain system for a liquid separator used in a moisture laden process vacuum system wherein the liquid separated from the flow stream by the separator is collected in an accumulator which in turn is periodically pressure purged to quickly remove the liquid contents of the accumulator while such accumulator is out of fluid communication with the liquid separator so that the vacuum process need not be interrupted. A pressure responsive drain valve is connected between the separator and the accumulator. The pressure used to purge the accumulator also activates the normally opened drain valve to inhibit the fluid flow between the separator and the accumulator. A pressure responsive drain is connected to the accumulator and opens in response to the increased pressure used to purge the accumulator and close the normally opened drain valve.

  • Patent number: 5020566
Abstract: A fuel supply system for a portable engine driven device is provided which comprises two fuel tanks that are spaced apart from each other. The two fuel tanks are connected in fluid communication by a first conduit that is connected to each fuel tank at a bottom portion thereof and at a region of that bottom portion which is closest to the other fuel tank. A fluid pumping means is provided and connected in fluid communication with each of the two fuel tanks for pumping a liquid from the two fuel tanks toward a device which requires the use of the fluid. For example, if the liquid in the tanks is a liquid fuel, it can be pumped for use by an internal combustion engine. In addition, the internal combustion engine can be connected in torque transmitting relation with a compressor such as in a portable engine driven compressor apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4142765
Abstract: An adjustable bearing assembly for mounting a rotor in a rotary gas machine includes a tapered roller bearing at the high pressure end to bear the combined axial thrust and radial loads induced on the high pressure end by the working fluid therein and an axially floating bearing at the low pressure end to bear radial load. No axial bearing adjustment or bearing preload is applied to the radial load bearing at the low pressure end to maintain proper internal clearance in the bearing at the high pressure end. To obtain simplified assembly and improved bearing life, initial bearing clearance is provided simultaneously during adjustment of rotor end clearance.

  • Patent number: 3947078
Abstract: A bearing assembly for the rotors of a rotary screw variable volume gas machine, as a compressor expander or fluid pump, includes opposed thrust and high radial load bearings at the high pressure end of each rotor and high thrust bearings for each rotor shaft at the low pressure end. An axial force is applied to each of the bearings at the low pressure end, opposing the axial load on the screws from the working fluid, tending to equalize the thrust load on the bearings at the high pressure end so that bearing wear is relatively even and bearing life is improved.
