  • Patent number: 5417806
Abstract: A method of removing fine contaminants from waste paper fibrous material (S) is described with solution (1) and pre cleaning (2) whereupon the fibrous material is first subjected to a washing treatment (3) and then to a flotation treatment (5). The washing filtrate (12) from the washing treatment (3) is cleaned in a filtrate-flotation treatment (4) so that a cleaned fraction (14) can be returned into the useful material (13) of the washing treatment. The so cleaned waste paper fibrous material can be passed to further treatment steps such as flotation, bleaching and/or dispersion. The reject material from the filtrate-flotation (4) is, in one embodiment, again subjected to a flotation treatment.

  • Patent number: 5406883
Abstract: A process is proposed for the dewatering of compressibly dewaterable materials, in particular waste from the processing of paper material, which enables a very high degree of dewatering so that the waste can be readily disposed of, e.g. dumped. For this purpose, the material to be dewatered is initially pre-dewatered by gravity, and usually also by compression, in a transportation section (5). This pre-dewatering can take place in a continually operating feed section (7) through a perforated sieve jacket (10). The material then reaches a press section (6) in which a discontinuously working pressing device is in operation. Further improvements in the dewatering performance are possible by various embodiments of the corresponding pressing elements (13,14). The invention relates to both the process and the device for implemention of the process.

  • Patent number: 5400708
Abstract: A roll assembly comprising a rotatable roll (1 in FIG. 2) and a second roll (2 in FIG. 2) cooperating therewith, in which a pressing element (17) to effect displacement between the rolls along a pressure plane of the roll assembly is located in one of the rolls (1,2) and in which both rolls are supported at either end by respective support members (5,6). Prior to operation of the roll assembly, dumbbell-like shaped connecting parts (7) installed in corresponding cut-outs (9) in the support members (5,6) are tensioned and thereby securely form-locked by actuating the pressing element (17). Locking action is released by subsequent deactivation of the pressing element (17) after which the connecting parts (7) can be withdrawn. Two principal advantages of this arrangement, are the compacter construction, enabled by the fact that the frame no longer bears the pressing forces of the roll assembly, and the ease and speed with which components such as rolls, roll jackets or felt belts can be changed.

  • Patent number: 5393290
Abstract: A roll for the thermal treatment of a web of material (4) in which the web of material (4) is cooled to a defined predetermined temperature in a gap (5) between the roll (1) and a counter-roll (2) is formed as a deflection controlled roll with a rotationally fixed carrier (8) and a rotatable roll jacket (10) which is supported relative to the latter with support elements (11). The roll jacket consists of a plurality of concentric zones, an inner soft zone (16) and a thin outer zone (17) with good thermal conductivity, for example of metal. The roll surface (22) is for example cooled with cooling gas nozzles which are regulated by a temperature sensor (20) so that the roll temperature in the gap (5) adopts a defined temperature value. A roll of this kind is for example suitable for use in a calender for the smoothing of a paper web or also for the processing or manufacture of a plastic foil.

  • Patent number: 5390592
Abstract: A press for the mechanical dewatering of water-containing pulverised solid material is provided with a rotatable feed screw (3) which is so floatably mounted that it can perform a rotary pendular pivoting movement about a swivel point (D) lying in the area of the drive. Thereby, a high dewatering power is achieved with advantagous wear properties of the press. By special formation of the region where the solid material leaves the feed section (3), the effect and operating behavior can be further improved.

  • Patent number: 5387782
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for the generation of smoothness in paper. The paper (1) is thereby supplied to the rolls (2) of the smoothing mechanism with a moisture distribution which is characterized in that the moisture content in the inner layers of the paper is substantially smaller or at least as large as in the outer layers. This can be achieved with the aid of a dielectric paper web heating device (3) which is positioned in front of the rolls (2) of the smoothing mechanism. Through the invention less energy is to be required for the same smoothness values and a lower reduction in volume is to take place.

  • Patent number: 5383833
Abstract: The end portions of a rotary shell forming part of a calendar roll can be heated or cooled by a suitable (gaseous or hydraulic) fluid which is admitted into axially parallel first channels of the shell. Such channels can extend from end face to end face of the shell or only in the region of one end face each. The first channels receive the fluid from second channels which extend radially inwardly to the internal surface of the shell, and spent fluid is admitted into third channels which extend from the respective first channels to the internal surface of the shell. The first channels accommodate axially adjustable throttles which are used to regulate the rate of fluid flow in the shell and to thus regulate the temperature of the respective end portions of the shell.

  • Patent number: 5371954
Abstract: A process for the guiding of fibre web or the like, in particular for paper production, especially in paper driers, wherein the suction applied can be varied both in real time operation and along the axes of the one or more suction rolls that is/are present and which may be used in conjunction with at least one travelling screen or the like. The object is to make the start-up process for the treatment of fibre webs on suction rolls more convenient without too much equipmental and operational overhead, and to prevent shrinkage of the web by providing good location at the web in the edge regions. This is achieved by restricting the suction which acts on the inside of the roll jacket to a region of the roll jacket which comes into contact with a lead-in strip for the fibre web during start-up operation. This process is continued until a sufficient length of fibre web has passed over the suction roll for the web to have reached its full or final width on this suction roll.

  • Patent number: 5347728
Abstract: The suction roll, especially for a paper web drier, comprises a perforated roll shell containing therein an internal chamber partitioned by a wall member transversely arranged with respect to the lengthwise axis of the suction roll. A connection flow communicates the interior of the suction roll with a suction device, preferably a vacuum pump. At least one blade or vane within the suction roll at least reduces or prevents a possibly arising rotational or cyclone-like flow. Thus, the pressure differential brought about by the suction device can be completely used for creating the suction action and for fixing the paper web at the suction roll. This rotational or cyclone-like flow particularly occurs when the suction action is applied through a hollow shaft or duct.

  • Patent number: 5320713
Abstract: In order to regulate dewatering of the fiber suspension and the formation of the paper web between the upper and lower wires of the papermaking machines, upper ledges are provided along with the upper wire. These upper ledges are particularly constructed so as to have uniform design. Between these upper ledges, there is left free the same distance or spacing. This distance is not smaller than the width of each upper ledge. The individual distances between the upper ledges can be closed by insertable inserts so that the dewatering can be forcibly accomplished at mutually separated zones. Along the lower wire, there are provided lower ledges at a table, and between these lower ledges, it can be adjusted varying distances or spacing therebetween. The mutual distance or spacing between the lower ledges, according to a favorable construction, is always greater than the width of the individual upper ledges plus the distance or spacing of an upper ledge from the next neighboring upper ledge.

  • Patent number: 5318670
Abstract: The invention has as its object the provision of a method and an apparatus for the generation of smoothness and gloss on paper which essentially precludes a re-erection of the surface fibers after the smoothing process. This is achieved in that the surface of a paper web (1) to be smoothed is heated to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the fibers at the surface of the web without subjecting the web to a press nip, and then these fibers are deformed and fixed in the deformed state in a subsequent process step under the simultaneous action of pressure with shock cooling. Accordingly, there is associated with each surface of the paper web (1) to be smoothed a heating device (2) and also a subsequent cooled body (5, 9, 10) which presses against the surface.

  • Patent number: 5279424
Abstract: The flotation apparatus removes ink- and contaminant particles from a fiber stock suspension which is produced during the preparation of waste paper. Admixing of air to the fiber stock suspension is accomplished in stepped diffusors. The fiber stock suspension admixed with air, prior to infeed into a flotation container, is guided through a deflection element effective as an impact mixer and followed by a mixing diffusor having a preferred flow direction. This flotation apparatus is especially suited for eliminating disturbing or spurious substances which are present throughout a relatively wide grain size spectrum. A particularly preferred construction uses one or more closed flotation containers, wherein the air effluxing from the flotation foam can be advantageously re-used for aeration of further infed fiber stock suspension.

  • Patent number: 5269075
Abstract: The apparatus for interconnecting two groups of driers of a papermaking machine serves to interconnect two successive drying sections through which successively travels a paper web which is dried by such successive drying sections. When needed or desired, such interconnection must be interrupted. For this purpose there are used additional elements which are capable of bringing about a separation of the endless drying wires associated with the respective web drying sections and, at the same time, during normal operation, that is, during the transfer of the paper web from the one to the other drying section, affording a regulatable operation capable of retaining the quality of the paper web. Thus, for this purpose there are proposed the use of adjustable rollers and also suction boxes operated under vacuum conditions.

  • Patent number: 5266167
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for roll cooling in paper machines with soft smoothing mechanisms. The object of the invention is to protect the soft roll from damage without having to increase the extent of edge trimming of the paper web. This is achieved in that the parts of the soft roll which respectively project beyond the width of the paper web are cooled by the application of a thin and sharply bounded water film. The corresponding devices for generating the water films are mounted in carriages which are displaceable along a transverse beam parallel to the roll.
