  • Patent number: 4743420
Abstract: A mold assembly for producing a container having a closed bottom is disclosed. Inner and outer core members are closely spaced together to provide a cavity for forming a container having a wall thickness on the order of 0.015 inch. The cavity is formed with a plurality of radial flow channels which produce corresponding ribs on the container bottom. The radial channels extend from an axial injection port outwardly to the wall portion of the cavity, where a thickened transition region joins the bottom of the container to the side wall portion thereof. A plurality of vertical flow channels are formed by means of milled flat portions on the surface of the inner core along the length of the side wall. The flow channels cause fluid plastic injected under high pressure to flow radially outwardly, around the bottom corner of the container, and down the vertical flow channels located intermediately of the ends of the ribs.

  • Patent number: 4700867
Abstract: An inner flexible container is formed with integral sidewalls and a base. A flange is provided at the upper portion of the container and receives the upper portion of a sleeve of paperboard or cardboard that is dimensioned to slide over the inner flexible container. A snap fit closure is applied to the interleaved flexible container's upper flange and outer sleeve and is held in place through the cooperation of interacting tongue and groove and bead and recess sets on the closure and container flange, as well as wedge rings and a locking lip on the flange and closure, respectively. The sleeved container is similar in appearance to conventional frozen juice concentrate containers yet functions in a far superior fashion.

  • Patent number: 4687116
Abstract: An easy open container end closure utilizes a pair of angled force directing score lines to direct an upward closure opening force which is applied to a pull ring or pull tab to an initial break line of finite length. The force directing score lines allow the container lid to pucker and to direct the applied opening force to the initial break line. Once this line has severed, continued lid separation acts in shear at two points of separation. The result is a container end closure which requires substantially less opening force than do prior art devices.

  • Patent number: 4683016
Abstract: A two part closure for a container is comprised of a flexible foil sealing disk together with a flanged linerless screw threaded closure cap. During the process of applying the closure to a container, the flexible foil sealing disk is formed, heated, and is tack adhered to the rim of the container. A closure cap having downwardly extending spaced sealing flanges is then screwed onto the container. The cap's sealing flanges contact the flexible foil sealing disk on opposite edges of the container's mouth rim and, as the cap is screwed down, these flanges bring the flexible foil sealing disk into continuous, intimate sealing contact with the container rim. Additionally, the inner closure flange draws the portion of the flexible foil sealing disk situated within the container mouth tight to eliminate creases and wrinkles in the foil sealing disk.

  • Patent number: 4667838
Abstract: An improved tamper-evident closure cap assembly for a container is disclosed. The closure cap assembly includes a breakaway skirt portion molded as a unitary part of the main body of the cap. The skirt incorporates a lower annular ring which engages a corresponding tamper bead on a container to tear the skirt portion away from the cap upon removal of the cap from the container. An annular band extends below the ring at the outer circumference of the skirt, forming an angled channel below the ring and inside the annular band. A plurality of spaced ribs span the channel from the ring to the band to strengthen the ring while allowing expansion of the skirt during capping operations.

  • Patent number: 4640435
Abstract: A container for carbonated beverages is disclosed. The container includes an interlocking plastic lid and plastic can construction wherein the lid snaps onto the can to provide a sealed container capable of withstanding high internal pressure without leakage. The can includes a neck portion having an inwardly extending ridge and an outwardly flared mouth thereabove. An outwardly and downwardly extending locking flange is unitarily formed at the top of the can mouth. The lid includes a concave top wall which fits into the can mouth and engages the ridge, and a peripheral rim which includes a downwardly opening groove to receive the locking flange. The lid is rigid, and is shaped to compress the locking flange as the lid is pressed onto the can, with the locking flange snapping outwardly over an annular shoulder to secure the lid in place.

  • Patent number: 4602718
Abstract: A tamper-evident closure, having a lower band attached by connecting ribs to the lower edge of the skirt portion of a cap, is disclosed. The attaching ribs for the lower band extend radially inwardly, and are adapted to engage radially outwardly extending fins on a container adapted to receive the closure, so that rotation of the cap will fracture the connecting ribs to detach the tamper-evident ring from the cap.The lower band also incorporates along its bottom edge an inwardly extending shoulder which engages the lower edges of the container fins, when the cap is in place. The cap incorporates a thumb tab for lifting the cap off the container. When this is done, the lifting motion will fracture the connecting ribs to detach the tamper-evident ring from the cap. Thus, either rotational or lifting movement of the cap provides visible evidence that the cap has been moved.

  • Patent number: 4560077
Abstract: A plastic closure cap particularly suited for use in situations which require a tight seal such as with carbonated beverage containers is disclosed. A pair of sealing flanges extend downwardly and outwardly from an inner surface of the top of the closure cap. These sealing flanges have a horizontal seal interference distance which increases with increased cap size to maintain an effective sealing function. Seal flange back up abutment surfaces are contacted by the free ends of the seal flanges and limit the deflection of the flanges thus causing the seal flanges to wrap around the container mouth as the cap is secured to the bottle. A load stop ring is positioned between, and separated from the seal flanges on the inner surface of the closure cap and contacts the container neck when the closure is in place. The sealing flanges include vent slots which increase the safety and convenience of the closure cap.

  • Patent number: 4552328
Abstract: A tamper proof closure cap for a container, a tool for manufacturing the cap and a method for removing the cap from the tool are defined. The cap is designed with the tamper proof skirt as a unitary structure with the main body of the cap. The skirt has unique structural aspects which allow for less complexity in the tool and ease of removal of the cap from the tool. The tool includes a stripper ring which laterally support the skirt and permits a shift of the pivot plane for the skirt relative to the main body portion during removal of the cap from the mold.

  • Patent number: 4534480
Abstract: A tamper evident closure preferably for use on a screw threaded neck of a container is disclosed. The closure includes a tamper evident band which is quite thin and has a diameter which approximates that of the cap's sidewall. The tamper evident band is joined to the cap's sidewall by a plurality of bridge strips that are circumferentially aligned with ratchet teeth on the tamper evident band. During application of the cap to the container neck, the band deforms as the ratchet teeth cam over cooperatively shaped ratchet lugs on the bottle neck. However, during cap removal, the ratchet lugs stop the ratchet teeth and the tamper evident band from moving so that the band is separated from the cap thereby providing a clear indication of tampering with the closure.
