Patent number: 4175423Abstract: In order to determine the pulse repetition rate of a fluidic oscillator through which a test gas, whose density is to be determined, is flowing, the pressure pulses appearing at one outlet port of the oscillator is sensed with a pressure transducer. The pulses are integrated for a sample period such that, upon transfer or display, the accumulated count directly represents the average pulse repetition frequency during the sample. Means are provided, in a surge tank, for controlling the temperature and pressure of the test gas, and temperature and pressure transducers in communication with the sample fluid in the surge tank are each coupled to voltage-to-frequency converters which drive counters in order that the temperature and pressure of the test gas may also be displayed. An interface to a thermal printer allows the preservation of written records of prf, temperature, and pressure readings. An interface to a digital tape recorder permits magnetic recording of the data for subsequent processing.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil Company (Delaware)Inventors: Clarence Braun, Joseph E. Patent number: 4170894Abstract: In order to determine the density of a test gas, the test gas is employed as the working fluid through an astable fluidic oscillator. Air, at the same temperature and pressure, is passed through the same or a like fluidic oscillator to obtain a second pulse repetition frequency reading. The density of the test gas is the ratio of the two pulse repetition frequencies. Preferably, for a given fluidic oscillator, graphs and/or tables are prepared giving the pulse repetition frequency of air at different temperatures and pressures in order that subsequent measurement of the pulse repetition frequency using a test gas will permit direct determination of the specific gravity of the test gas from a graph or table.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: October 16, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil CompanyInventor: Joseph E. Patent number: 4165346Abstract: Fibers of block copolymer of poly (4,7-dioxadecamethylene adipamide) - polycaprolactam, i.e. N-30203-6//6, have a tendency to fuse when scoured in boiling water. By replacing a minor amount of the adipic acid present in the N-30203-6 portion of the block copolymer with terephthalic acid the fusion is eliminated. The resulting novel composition consists of blocks of random N-30203-6 and N-30203-T with nylon-6 blocks. The composition maintains its good hydrophilic properties.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1978Date of Patent: August 21, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil Company of PennsylvaniaInventor: Robert M. Thompson

Patent number: 4163620Abstract: In order to increase the vertical load bearing capacity of an ice field such as may be found in the Arctic, whereby buildings, drilling rigs, or the like may be supported, an inflatable hull is positioned beneath the ice, initially in deflated form. Inflation of the hull is carried out in conjunction with application of the load under control of level sensor means which govern the rate of inflation according to the deflection of the ice as the load is applied. Very high load bearing capacity may be obtained and maintained, even for relatively thin ice, within a short period. Degree of inflation control apparatus may be employed to accomodate varying loads, and a multiple-hull system is contemplated for practicing the invention over relatively large areas.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1978Date of Patent: August 7, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil Company, Ltd.Inventor: Gunter J. Patent number: 4154297Abstract: In order to prevent freezing of the input lift gas in an oilwell in which gas under pressure is used to lift the well fluids, a heat exchanger is provided which serves to heat the input gas from the warm well fluids. The heat exchanger includes an outer casing and a coaxial tubing which is in line with the well fluid flow. The casing is sealed, and the tubing within the casing is provided with openings which permit the circulation of well fluids in the space between the casing inner wall and the tubing. Relatively small stainless steel tubing is spirally wrapped, in two spaced apart sections, around the tubing within the casing, and access parts are provided to permit the passage of input lift gas through the wrapped tubing prior to its injection into the well. The two wrapped tubing sections are coupled by a gas flow control valve external to the casing.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1977Date of Patent: May 15, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil CompanyInventor: Douglas L. Patent number: 4150561Abstract: In order to determine the constituent gases of a gas mixture, the test gas is employed as the working fluid for an astable fluidic oscillator in a series of runs taken at different temperatures. The pulse repetition frequencies observed are related to similar pulse repetition frequencies observed when air is employed as the working fluid at corresponding temperatures and pressures. By this means, a plurality of equations can be written and solved for the unknown percentages. The characteristics of a given astable multivibrator can readily be predetermined and recorded on a graph in a table to facilitate preparation of equations which can be solved by ordinary simultaneous equation techniques.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: April 24, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil CompanyInventor: Joseph E. Patent number: 4132645Abstract: A two stage oil skimmer separator for separating a hydrocarbon, such as oil or wax, from the water in a hydrocarbon-water mixture which is of particular utility for the output from an oil refinery storm sewer system. The first stage of the separator includes a tank which allows gravity separation of the hydrocarbon and water. The floating hydrocarbon is skimmed off the top and directed to the second stage separator. The settled water passes under a baffle to retain the hydrocarbon within the system while passing the water out of the separator. The skimmed hydrocarbon, containing some water, is directed to the second stage where it is heated to facilitate further separation. The hydrocarbon is passed from the top of the second stage to storage tanks in the refinery. The water in the bottom of the second stage tank is returned to the first stage for further separation.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1977Date of Patent: January 2, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil Company of PennsylvaniaInventors: James C. Patent number: 4132591Abstract: An improved method of pulp or pressure molding a multilayer container is disclosed wherein the inner layer consists of fused water dispersible polyolefin fibers whereas the outer layer consists of a mixture of cellulosic fibers bonded together by fused water dispersible polyolefin fibers. The containers are useful because the polyolefin layer is resistant to the passage of liquid such as lubricating oils and semi-solids such as greases while the mixed layer of cellulosic fibers and the polyolefin fiber supplies sufficient strength to permit the stacking of the containers when filled.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1977Date of Patent: January 2, 1979Assignee: Sun Oil Company of PennsylvaniaInventor: John C. Patent number: 4121635Abstract: A gasoline dispensing nozzle having a system for receiving vapors displaced from a motor vehicle gasoline tank being filled, and an interlock system for both preventing the dispensing of gasoline and closing the vapor receiving system until the discharge spout is properly inserted into the motor vehicle fillpipe. The interlock system includes a first valve mounted in the vapor receiving system outside the discharge spout. This first valve is opened when the nozzle is properly inserted into the fillpipe, and is interconnected with the automatic shut-off system of the nozzle so that dispensing of gasoline is permitted only when the nozzle is properly inserted into the fillpipe. The interlock system also includes a second valve which closes the vapor receiving system, thereby preventing vapors from escaping, until the nozzle is properly inserted in the fillpipe.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1977Date of Patent: October 24, 1978Assignee: Sun Oil Company of PennsylvaniaInventor: William B.
