  • Patent number: 5695239
Abstract: A hardware assembly for mounting a retractable ottoman on a seating unit frame below the front edge of an occupant support cushion. The assembly includes a frame bracket having a plate and an underlip, the frame and underlip each carrying a flange, the flanges are generally perpendicular to the plate and together carry a first pivot and a second pivot positioned below and rearward of the first pivot. The assembly also includes an ottoman bracket having a pair of pivots. A lazy tong linkage connects the brackets and locks in a horizontal extended position. The assembly may be optionally spring driven to facilitate deployment of an ottoman on the ottoman bracket.

  • Patent number: 5419611
Abstract: Motion furniture seating having an ottoman assembly including a main ottoman and a mid-ottoman and wherein each of the ottomans includes a foot supporting panel and side panels. When the assembly is retracted the mid-ottoman nests inside the main ottoman beneath the seat and when the assembly is extended the foot supporting panels lie in substantially the same plane as a continuation of the seat and the side panels extend downwardly from the foot supporting panels and essentially hide the mechanism which carries the ottomans and inhibits access to the mechanism by a child or animal so as to avoid injury.

  • Patent number: 5360255
Abstract: A modular furniture seating section having a pair of side rails that define a base for the section and a pair of reclining mechanisms, one mounted on each of the side rails. Each of the mechanisms includes a seat mounting link which together carry a seat frame that in turn carries the seat of the chair. An ottoman linkage is mounted on the front of the seat mounting link in each mechanism and together they carry the ottoman which moves between retracted and extended positions. The mechanisms also include a backrest linkage which carries the backrest frame that, in turn, carries the backrest. On one side only of the chair an arm panel is secured to the seat frame and moves together with the seat in fixed relationship thereto as the chair moves between upright and reclined positions. On the same side as the arm panel, a backrest side wing is mounted on the backrest frame so as to move with it.

  • Patent number: 5137328
Abstract: A push button actuated latch used in reclining chairs wherein one part of the latch is mounted on the ottoman linkage and the complimentary part of the latch is mounted beneath the seat. When the ottoman is retracted beneath the seat as the chair moves to the upright position, the parts of the latch engage one another to retain the ottoman in the retracted position. When the push button is depressed, a cable attached between it and the latch releases the latch and allows the ottoman to extend and the chair to move to the reclined position.

  • Patent number: 5072988
Abstract: A three-position reclining chair having a seat and backrest that move relative to one another. The seat and backrest are supported by a mechanism having a seat mounting link carried by swing links suspended from a support link in turn carried by pivot links mounted on a roller link. The roller link moves fore and aft on fixed tracks mounted on the base. A drive link is connected to one of the pivot links and to a bell crank mounted on the roller link. The bell crank is also attached at one end to the base. A handle actuating assembly is also connected to one of pivot links. Actuation of the handle drives the roller link forward on the base and simultaneously moves the pivot links over center so that the occupant's weight moves the seat to the intermediate reclining position. To move to the fully reclined position the occupant pushes against the arms of the chair which moves the swing links and seat mounting link further forward and tilts the backrest rearwardly.

  • Patent number: 5044692
Abstract: A pivoting top rail headrest for an incliner seat is provided in which the top rail is secured to the top of the fixed back and spans a gap between a fixed back and a backrest when the seat is in an upright position. The top rail pivots downwardly when the body support is moved to a reclining position, and serves as a headrest extension and covers the gap by forming a generally continuous line between the moveable backrest and the top of the fixed back.

  • Patent number: 4919478
Abstract: An ottoman for a chair or sofa wherein the mechanism which carries the ottoman allows it to pivot upwardly or downwardly from its supporting bracket of an obstruction is encountered as the ottoman is retracted. In the event the ottoman pivots in either direction more than a selected angle, the ottoman remains in the pivoted position after the obstruction is removed unless a force is applied to return it to the normal position.

  • Patent number: 4904019
Abstract: A wall proximity three-position reclining chair capable of being placed immediately adjacent a wall having a seat and arm assembly which moves with respect to a fixed base and which has a backrest movable with respect to the seat. The seat and arm assembly and backrest are carried by a handle actuated mechanism which includes a seat mounting link supported by swing links in turn suspended from a support link. The support link is carried on front and rear pivot links mounted on a roller link which in turn moves fore and aft on the base. A roller link control assembly is connected between one of the swing links and the roller link for moving the roller link to rearwardmost, intermediate and forwardmost positions as the chair assumes the upright, TV and fully reclined positions, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4878710
Abstract: A three-position reclining chair capable of being placed with its backrest immediately adjacent to a wall without interference from the wall when the chair is reclined. The chair has a base, a rigidly connected seat and armrest assembly, a backrest movably on the seat and armrest assembly, a footrest, and linkage mechanisms for connecting the several parts of the chair together and allowing the chair to assume any of the three positions. The mechanism includes compound front and area pivot linkages which carry a support link on a base plate, and the support link forms part of and carries a four-bar linkage which includes a seat mounting bracket. The compound linkages enable the support link and seat and armrest assembly to move forward when the chair is reclined to provide room for the backrest to tilt back without interference from the wall.

  • Patent number: 4826243
Abstract: A three-position reclining chair with a stationary frame, and a movable seat and backrest fixed with respect to one another. A handle actuated mechanism supports the seat and backrest within the frame and includes a mounting plate attached to the frame arms, a carrier link pivoted at its rear end on the mounting plate, and a seat mounting link carrying the seat and backrest and pivoted at its rear end on a rear pivot link and at its front end on a front pivot link, in turn respectively supported on the mounting plate and carrier link. A lazy tong linkage mounts on a footrest on the seat mounting link and front pivot link. The handle assembly with the assist of a spring pivots the rear pivot link to move the chair from an upright to an intermediate reclining position, and pressure against the backrest pivots the carrier link on the mounting plate to move the chair from the intermediate to the fully reclined position.

  • Patent number: 4736984
Abstract: A central pivot rocker spring assembly for connecting a base to a lower frame member in a reclining chair with a rocking feature so that the lower frame member pivots about a single axis of rotation. The spring assembly includes a first bracket mountable to the base, a second bracket mountable to the lower frame member and pivot pins securing the brackets together on the axis of rotation. A leaf spring biases the first and second brackets to selected relative positions. The leaf spring passes through and is fixed in position at its center on the axis of rotation. Thumbscrews coupling the leaf spring to the second bracket permit independent adjustment of the forward and backward rocking motions of the chair. The thumbscrews are movable to permit wide variations in biasing forces.
