Patent number: 8956596Abstract: The present invention is drawn to a process for improving the efficiency of sunscreens using a series of polyesters based upon sorbeth ethoxylates esterified with fatty acids, then crosslinked with dimer acid. These polyesters exhibit a synergistic interaction with sunscreen actives improving the efficiency providing a “shield” for the body from the harmful effects of the sun. These sorbitol alkoxylates are then reacted with dimer acid, resulting in a series of novel polyesters. The linking of the two spider esters together with dimer provide an amphilic macromolecule possessing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic portions covalently bonded to the same molecule, this provides both a boost in sun protection factor (SPF) and the ability for the sunscreen actives to be applied to wet skin.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2013Date of Patent: February 17, 2015Assignee: SurfaTech CorporationInventor: Thomas George O'Lenick

Patent number: 8808677Abstract: The present invention is directed to a series of functionalized glycerin based polymers that have been designed to have very specific substitution patterns, herein referred to as regio-specific substitution (RSS). We have surprisingly found that by linking triglycerides into polymer backbones and controlling the location of the different alkyl groups along that backbone, the performance and structure can be fine tuned. The properties of these polymers can be controlled and tuned by judicial control of the polymerization conditions, specifically by employing the use of mono-functional monomers. This polymer will has “compartments” of solid and liquid pendant group domains if the proper pendant groups are chosen. This unique multi-dimensional, high definition polymer will have very unique physical properties, including unique shear and flow behaviors. These polymers will provide outstanding and unique skin feels when used in cosmetic applications.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 2013Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: SurfaTech CorporationInventor: Thomas George O'Lenick

Patent number: 8808676Abstract: The present invention is aimed at a series of novel glycerin polyesters that provide desired aesthetics and structure in cosmetic formulation. These glycerin polymers are synthesized by polycondensation polymerization, in the presence of a monofunctional monomer or terminal group. By carefully choosing the groups the properties can be dramatically altered. The mono-functional alcohols, being only able to react in one position, can only be located on the polymer chain ends. This provides very unique polymer structure and morphology. These regiospecific polyesters will have very unique physical properties and have a wide variety of solubilities. Furthermore, by the incorporation of a co-monomer will produce a copolymer with drastically different solubilities and aesthetics.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2013Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: SurfaTech CorporationInventor: Thomas George O'Lenick

Patent number: 8623969Abstract: The present invention is directed to a series of glycerin based polymers that have been designed to have very specific substitution patterns, herein referred to as regiospecific substitution (RSS). The attachment of terminal mono-functional silicone polymers engineered polyesters of glycerin results in heretofore unrecognized products. The unique properties include lower surface tension, better spreadability and a dry skin feel, all of which cannot be attained without the use of a terminal silicone. Incorporation of silicone into the terminal position requires a very specific synthesis regime to establish the sought after regiospecificity.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2013Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Assignee: Surfatech CorporationInventor: Thomas George O'Lenick

Patent number: 8617527Abstract: The current invention is drawn to a series of citrate esters having alkyl groups and a silicone groups esterified onto citric acid. This results an outstanding skin feel, making outstanding waterproofing and emollient properties when applied to skin. A required critical element of the invention is that both the silicone and the alkyl material be mono functional with regard to hydroxyl functionality. If either group has more than mono functionality, they will react with the citric acid (which has three carboxyl groups) to give undesired polymers. The ability to vary the ratio of alkyl to silicone results an ability to alter skin feel and consequently provide the cosmetic formulator with more latitude in choosing ingredients for incorporation into formulations.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2011Date of Patent: December 31, 2013Assignee: SurfaTech CorporationInventor: Kevin A.
