Patent number: 6937804Abstract: A photonic switch according to the present invention may be formed using one of a selected group of non-linear optical materials. Each of the materials within this group has a refractive index that demonstrates a substantial peak as a function of wavelength, where the peak occurs at a wavelength distinct from the wavelength of the input signal. A method of producing a photonic switch according to the present invention includes fabricating source and drain waveguides using micro-molding or micro-contact printing processes, or MIMIC (micro-molding in capillaries) of a UV-curable polymer. If desired, a gate waveguide may also be formed in part by these processes. The photonic switch also includes a photonic crystal formed from non-linear optical material, which may be formed, for example, using a block copolymer and nanoparticle composite in a MIMIC or ?fluidics process. Such a process may employ a functionalized mold material to align the blocks.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2003Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Surface Logix Inc.Inventors: Christopher McCoy, John Tsen-Tao Chen

Patent number: 6885790Abstract: A photonic switch may be formed using one of a selected group of non-linear optical materials. Each of the materials within this group has a refractive index that demonstrates a substantial peak as a function of wavelength. The photonic switch includes a positive gain, and thus acts as a photonic transistor. In addition, a photonic switch is formed so that a gate signal is applied in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to the direction of the input signal so that there is no effective contamination of the input signal by the gate signal affecting the output signal.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2002Date of Patent: April 26, 2005Assignee: Surface Logix Inc.Inventors: Christopher McCoy, John Tsen-Tao Chen

Patent number: 6833040Abstract: A method for applying a pattern to a target surface includes the steps of applying a coating of membrane material over a selected portion of a substrate. The substrate imparts a pattern to the membrane material corresponding to a pattern to be applied to the target surface. A support member is positioned in contact with an outer portion of the membrane material. The support member has a higher rigidity than the membrane material. The method may also combine the steps of curing the membrane material to bond the support member to the membrane. When bonded to the membrane, the support member maintains at least a portion of the membrane in a substantially taut condition to prevent a portion of the membrane from folding onto itself. The membrane is then employed to impart the pattern to the target surface.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2001Date of Patent: December 21, 2004Assignee: Surface Logix Inc.Inventors: Aaron Raphel, Enoch Kim, Emanuele Ostuni, Gregory Kirk, Olivier Schueller
