Patent number: 8287537Abstract: Head fixation devices and methods of fixating heads of patients for surgical procedures. The head fixation devices generally respectively comprise a skull clamp, a skull clamp arc assembly movable relative to the skull clamp, and a plurality of skull pins operable to engage and fixate heads of patients during neurosurgical and cervical spine procedures. The skull clamp can comprise a single skull pin on each end of the clamp. The two skull pins apply substantially equal compressive forces to the head of a patient. The skull clamp arc assembly, and an arc skull pin thereof, is pivotable to engage and disengage the patient's head for additional fixation support of the head.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2009Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Dinkler Surgical Devices, Inc.Inventor: Charles E. Publication number: 20110135700Abstract: The present invention relates to a hydrated, biocompatible tissue-augmentation compound and methodology for its implantation into mammalian tissue. The tissue-augmentation compound is comprised of: living tissue, optionally body derived fluids, and at least one NCO-terminated hydrophilic urethane prepolymer derived from an organic polyisocyanate, and oxyethylene-containing diols or polyols in which essentially all of hydroxyl groups are capped with polyisocyanate.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 31, 2011Publication date: June 9, 2011Applicant: PROMETHEAN SURGICAL DEVICES, INC.Inventor: Michael T. Milbocker

Publication number: 20090012462Abstract: A new reversibly gelling polyurethane (RGP) polymer composition is described, as well as novel processes for its preparation, and its medical uses for filling spaces in tissue, or bulking tissue, or for restoring organ function. The novel RGP polymer forms a gel on standing, liquefies during shear and reversibly reforms a macroscopic gel on standing after being sheared. Methods of use include delivering the improved gel to a site on the body to fill voids or to augment local tissue bulk.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 24, 2007Publication date: January 8, 2009Applicant: Promethean Surgical Devices Inc.Inventors: Michael T. Patent number: 6387058Abstract: A device is provided for self-sampling a body cavity, in particular the cervix, and a method is provided to use the device to obtain samples from the cervix for testing for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. The device includes elongated flexible bristles attached to a handle to form a mop-like sampling member. The sampling member is slidably disposed within an annular shield for insertion into the vaginal cavity and for positioning in contact with the cervix. After the shield is located in position, the shield is partially withdrawn to expose the elongated bristles to the cervix. The sampling member is rotated to mop the cervix and obtain a sample of cervical cells on the elongated bristles. The sampling device is then withdrawn from the vaginal cavity and the sample is sent for analysis.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2000Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Wallach Surgical Devices, Inc.Inventor: Ronald M. Wallach

Patent number: 6358244Abstract: An endarterectomy surgical instrument and procedure for removing plaque from a selected length of an artery and surgical instruments for cutting plaque build-ups. The endarterectomy surgical instrument has means for developing an image of the surgical site so that probing of the artery can be observed without requiring opening the artery along the selected length over which the plaque is removed.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1999Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Endo Surgical Devices, Inc.Inventors: Fredric A. Patent number: 5779716Abstract: The present invention is directed to a surgical instrument used in minimally invasive procedures performed under either direct, endoscopic, fluoroscopic, or other visualization. The present invention is also directed to a method of removing foreign objects from the body with the instrument. The surgical instrument includes a wire linkage and wire frame which can be retracted and extended to form a loop. A mouth of a sack is attached to the loop, said sack being used to encircle and capture foreign objects in body canals, cavities and organs. The wire frame is formed of a shape-memory-effect alloy wire, the alloy in a super elastic state and previously trained to form the loop, the loop forming when the said wire frame is extended beyond the sheath.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1995Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: Metamorphic Surgical Devices, Inc.Inventors: Gerald G. Cano, Robert W. Doebler

Patent number: 5766218Abstract: A binding device and method of use for providing a compressive force across tissue boundaries to promote healing. The binding device includes a strap adapted to form a loop about injured tissue and a tension member attached to the strap, wherein the tension member maintains a predetermined stress level in the loop which compresses the edges of the tissue together to foster healing. The tension member is preferably a shape memory effect alloy, such as nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy. The binding device also includes a one-way locking mechanism which keeps the strap in a loop.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1996Date of Patent: June 16, 1998Assignee: Metamorphic Surgical Devices, Inc.Inventor: Richard J. Patent number: 4944443Abstract: A surgical instrument for suturing a hernial opening in internal body tissues of a patient comprises an elongate staple cartridge rotatably mounted to an elongate frame at a distal end thereof and an elongate staple forming plate movably mounted to the frame for ejecting a staple from the cartridge into the body tissues of the patient and deforming the staple from an open position to a closed position in which the staple holds together two pieces of body tissue on opposite sides of the hernial opening. The instrument further includes a rotator assembly operatively connected to the cartridge for rotatating the cartridge from an orientation aligned with the frame means to a staple ejection orientation transverse to the frame. A tissue positioning assembly separate from the staple forming plate is provided for gripping, approximating and temporarily holding together in a stapling position the two pieces of body tissue prior to and during a stapling operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1988Date of Patent: July 31, 1990Assignee: Innovative Surgical Devices, Inc.Inventors: Robert R.
