Abstract: Various methods and systems for using email to convey backup and restore data are disclosed. One method involves: receiving a request to perform a backup system operation; generating an email that includes data and metadata (which is associated with the data); and sending the email to an email address associated with a backup system component. The request can be a backup request, in which case the data includes data to be backed up, and the backup system component is a backup server. Alternatively, the request can be receiving a restore request. In this scenario, the data includes data to be restored, and the backup system component is a backup client.

Abstract: A method, system, computer system, and computer program product to allocate storage resources among multiple logical volumes. In response to a request to perform a set of operations on multiple logical volumes, a set of allocations of available storage space for performing the set of operations is made. At the time of identifying the storage regions to use for each allocation, the remaining operations and the storage regions that would be available for performing the remaining operations are examined. The rules for implementing each of the logical volumes can be evaluated as part of this examination. If it is apparent that one of the remaining operations will fail based upon a particular set of allocations, space allocated for a previous operation can be de-allocated and alternative allocations can be examined to find a set of allocations that enable the request to be performed successfully.

Abstract: A method and system for mirror storage element resynchronization in a storage virtualization device is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a read operation on a region of a data volume is received at a first module of a first storage virtualization device where the data volume is associated with at least a first mirror storage element and a second mirror storage element, a state indicated by a bit corresponding to the region of the data volume within a first synchronization map is determined in response to receiving the read operation, the read operation is processed using the first module if the bit is determined to indicate a first state and using a second module of the first storage virtualization device if the bit is determined to indicate a second state.
