  • Patent number: 7826862
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for determining the location of a first wireless device (e.g., a mobile unit) within a wireless network comprising a second wireless device (e.g., an access point). The method includes determining a signal strength contour associated with RF communication between the access point and the mobile unit, and adding a correction factor to the signal strength contour to produce a corrected signal strength contour, wherein the correction factor includes the sums of the differences between the transmit power and the antenna gain associated with the mobile unit and the access point. In an alternate scheme involving stored fingerprint data, a correction factor is introduced based on the differences between antenna gains and transmit power associated with the mobile unit under consideration and the mobile unit used for generating the fingerprint data. The systems and methods disclosed herein are applicable, for example, to networks operating in accordance with 802.

  • Patent number: 7825806
Abstract: The duty cycle of a portable battery-powered RFID tag reader is reduced during time periods when it is less likely to produce a “read” in order to preserve battery life. The reader operates with an aggressive duty cycle during periods of a high probability of a tag read and reduces duty cycle during periods of a low probability of a tag read. In this manner a user does not perceive the reader to be sluggish. An alternative embodiment reduces peak operating power during time periods when a tag is less likely to produce a “read” in order to preserve battery life.

  • Patent number: 7827610
Abstract: A intrusion detection method is disclosed for use in a wireless local area data communications system, wherein mobile units communicate with access points, and wherein the system is arranged to locate transmitters using signals transmitted by the transmitters. A database relating authorized transmitters to location is maintained. Selected signals are detected at the access points and location data corresponding to the selected signals for use in locating a source of the signals is recorded. The source location is determined using the location data, and the source location is compared to a corresponding location in the database. An alarm is signaled if the source location is inconsistent with the corresponding database location.

  • Patent number: 7822944
Abstract: Systems and methods for optimizing random access retrieval of a requested data item in a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag are provided. During random access retrieval, a first read of a memory bank in the RFID tag is performed. The first read providers a set of identifier indices stored in a packed object in the memory bank of the RFID tag and a length of the packed object. A determination is then made whether a retrieved identifier index represents the requested data item to be retrieved. A second read of the memory bank, accessing the portion of the memory bank including the data items, is then performed. The location of the data item in the packed object may optionally be determined prior to the second read.

  • Patent number: 7815119
Abstract: Contamination in a feedback signal is eliminated in a laser scanning arrangement having a drive coil driven by a drive signal formed as a periodic train of drive pulses to oscillate a scan mirror and a light beam reflected from the scan mirror. A feedback coil generates a feedback signal during oscillation of the scan mirror, the feedback coil being in proximity with the drive coil and being subject to corruption by cross-coupling between the coils. The drive coil is not driven with at least one drive pulse during a quiet time period. Cross-coupling is eliminated by generating the feedback signal only during the quiet time period, and by monitoring a position of the scan mirror by processing the feedback signal which was generated only during the quiet time period.
