Abstract: A system and method to track a status an item, or steps in a process, via one or more mechanical modifications to an RFID tag. In one embodiment, a plurality of tearable strips are attached to the tag, each strip having an electrical conductor. Each tearable strip may receive a visual or tactile indicia, such as text, a color code, a graphic symbol, or a tactile indicator (such as Braille) to assign a meaning to the strip, where the meaning is associated with the status or condition of the item, or the stage, step, or status or the process. By tearing some strips or all strips, a desired bit pattern may be programmed into a register of the RFID tag. The bit pattern may reflect the status or condition of the item, or the stage, step, or status of a process.
Abstract: A heater is provided in a cordless reader, or in a cradle, for heating the reader simultaneously with charging a battery pack on the reader, to resist the formation of condensation in the reader, or fogging or frosting of a protective window of the reader.
Abstract: A computer network as described herein includes multiple wireless switches cooperating with wireless access devices. The wireless access devices include intelligent processing that enables them to select a desired wireless switch for adoption. When in need of adoption, a wireless access device sends at least one SWITCH DISCOVER message over the network, the wireless switches reply with SWITCH OFFER messages, and the wireless access device processes the SWITCH OFFER messages to select a desired wireless switch for adoption. The SWITCH OFFER messages contain switch selection information associated with the respective wireless switches, and the wireless access device analyzes the switch selection information during the selection process.
Abstract: Methods and systems for the negotiation of a population of RFID tags with improved security is provided. In one aspect, tags are singulated without using information that directly identifies the tags in the tag population. A key is generated to identify each RFID tag of the population of RFID tags. The generated key does not include bits identifying an item with which the particular RFID tag is associated. An algorithm is operated to identify one or more tags in the population of RFIDs tags using the generated keys. In another aspect, frequency hopping and/or spread spectrum techniques are used to provide improved security while negotiating tags. In another aspect, the reader causes the tags to scroll series of bits back to the reader for each bit sent to the tags to provide improved security.

Abstract: Crosstalk between a drive coil and a primary feedback coil is eliminated by positioning a secondary feedback coil in proximity with the drive coil for contamination by the crosstalk to the same extent as the primary feedback coil, and by processing feedback signals generated by the feedback coils to cancel the crosstalk. The drive coil is used to oscillate a scan mirror employed in an image projection arrangement or an electro-optical reader.
Abstract: Described is a system and method for authenticating a power source. The system comprises a battery including a first encryption engine storing a first key, and a battery charger including a microcontroller and a second encryption engine storing a second key. When the microcontroller detects a coupling of the battery to the charger, the microcontroller issues a challenge to the first encryption engine and the second encryption engine. The first encryption engine generates a first response as a function of the challenge, the first key and a predefined algorithm, and the second encryption engine generates a second response as a function of the challenge, the second key and the predefined algorithm. The microcontroller compares the first and second responses to authenticate the battery.
Abstract: An imaging-based bar code reader that includes an imaging and decoding system. Focusing optics and a sensor array define a field of view. A data processor has a memory for storing a pattern definition of previously imaged OCR characters and comparing a format of said previously stored characters to a present image to determine a character content of the present image.
Abstract: A thermal management system and method to control temperature in an RFID reader is described herein. In particular, by inserting variable periods of inactivity (or latency) at the beginning or at the end of each read cycle, proportional to an instantaneous temperature value of the RFID reader, over-heating and damage of RFID reader electronics is prevented. The RFID reader includes a thermal sensor and determines when the high power RF electronics is enabled. If the RFID reader is in an over-heated condition, it can be turned OFF and during this period any requests received on an interface to the RFID reader to perform a read of tag(s) are not processed.

Abstract: A wireless communications network includes a reconfigurable array of access points for linking wireless devices in an infrastructure mode. One or more of the access points are mobile. The mobile access points in the network can be repositioned to change the geographic distribution of the bandwidth coverage provided by the wireless network. The mobile access points may be repositioned to redistribute available network bandwidth heterogeneously according to the demand for bandwidth in local areas and to meet quality of service standards.
Abstract: A portable bar code reading terminal includes an ASIC having circuitry for both a laser scanner and an imager. The terminal also includes a data blender for distributing data from multiple sources to multiple destinations based on the type and/or content of the data. The ASIC further provides circuitry for at least one of the following functions: power management, wake up control and power down, critical suspend shutdown, warm and cold boot functions, serial ports, matrix keyboard scanning, analog converters, touch panel, modular memory IDE interface, imaging support, finger print reader, USB host, and a magnetic stripe interface.

Abstract: A system and method for reading an optical code is provided. The optical code reader system includes a dual aim/illumination assembly including a single light source generating: a) light having a first intensity for providing an aim pattern visible to a user for aiming the aim pattern at a target during an aim period of a scan cycle having at least an aim period and an exposure period; and b) light having a second intensity greater than the first intensity for providing illumination during the exposure period of the scan cycle. An imager module having an array of photo sensors senses incident light and generating image signals corresponding to the sensing during the exposure period.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the configuration of a wireless network adapter is disclosed. A wireless network adapter is provided with software that enables the adapter to recognize and connect with one or more networks. Software profiles are loaded onto or created on the adapter. The software profiles each correspond to a unique network.
Abstract: Described is a system and method for battery removal in a mobile device. The system comprises a battery receiving chamber receiving a battery to power the device and a suspension mechanism holding the battery in the battery receiving chamber, the suspension mechanism releasing the battery after receiving a signal. The method comprises determining if a mobile device is shut down and releasing a power supply from a suspension mechanism after the mobile device is shut down.
Abstract: A method of maintaining communications between a mobile, wireless terminal and a base station of a wireless local area network is performed by determining at the base station, that communications between the base station and the terminal over a first channel on the wireless local area network has been impeded; and placing a telephone call to the terminal over a separate, distinct, second channel on a public switched telephone network. The caller ID of the incoming call is then used to verify the authenticity of the base station. Further communications continue over the second channel on the telephone network.
