Abstract: Described is a method wherein a computer terminal is coupled to a power supply through a docking arrangement. The docking arrangement includes a protection circuit. A current supplied to the computing terminal is detected. When the current is greater than a predetermined value, the computer terminal is decoupled from the power supply. After the computer terminal is decoupled from the power supply, the computer terminal is recoupled to the power supply, and the method repeats beginning with detecting the current supplied to the computing terminal.
Abstract: Mobile units within an area are located using a wireless local area network. Reference signal transmitters are provided at selected fixed locations within the area. Reference signals are transmitted using the reference signal transmitters using a first selected channel of the wireless local area network. A computer is provided having a database relating signal characteristics of signals transmitted by the reference signal transmitters to location within the area At least one access point is coupled to the computer and provides wireless data communications between the computer and the mobile unit using one or more channels of the wireless data communications system that are different from the first data communications channel.
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for removing a power supply from a host unit running a computer program, without losing data or causing a cold boot. The present invention employs a retaining assembly for the power supply that delays removal of the power supply until shutting down of the computer program of the host unit. The system may further comprise a logic unit that estimates the period from initiating a power off for the unit, up to an actual shut down of the computer program.

The cashier may interact with the keypad, while the customer (and not the cashier) may interact with the customer-interaction circuit. The link may communicate a dollar amount for the transaction between the keypad and the customer-interaction circuit. Accessories for the keypad may include a display. Accessories for the customer-interaction circuit may include a smart-card reader, a magnetic-strip reader, a check reader, a receipt printer and a biometric-information circuit. The customer-interaction circuit may include a port for connection to a remote service provider. That port may be the only remote-access port in the transaction system.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for optimizing the placement of wireless transmitters or other RF components within an environment. A first one of the plurality of RF devices is initially placed at a first initial location within the spatial model, wherein the first initial location is determined with respect to the reference point. The coverage area for the first RF device is determined, and a second one of the plurality of RF devices is initially placed at a second initial location within the spatial model, wherein the second initial location is determined with respect to the coverage area of the first RF device. At least one of the first and second initial locations can be adjusted to improve the combined coverage area of the first and second RF devices.
Abstract: The present invention relates to network communication systems for managing client/server connections in a wireless environment. In accordance with the invention, a mobile communication unit (i.e., client), deploys keepalive packets at selected times in order to reset a keepidle timer of a server (e.g., host computer). By periodically resetting the keepidle timer a current connection between the mobile communication unit and server can be maintained as long as desired even when the mobile communication unit is in a power suspend mode. When in a power suspend mode, the mobile communication unit can briefly awake long enough to activate its transmitter and send a keepalive packet to the server to maintain the current connection. In this manner, the mobile communication unit can obtain the power savings of being in primarily a power suspend mode, but still prevent the current connection from timing out.
Abstract: Real time location system functionality is provided in conjunction with bar codes and other coded information devices to provide location information in transaction processing systems. A system and method of the present invention may be used to track the location of objects which are coupled to coded information devices.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for automatically and autonomously forming a wireless personal area network (WPAN) from an array of intercommunicating personal area network (PAN) devices. The devices comprise first communicators associated with primary functions of the devices and second communicators coupled to the first communicators for determining a subset of the devices meeting predetermined association criteria, from which subset the first communicators form the WPAN. In a preferred embodiment, the second communicators include range measuring transceivers and processors coupled to the transceivers that cooperate to determine range and relative motion of elements within communication range of the first communicators for comparison to range and relative motion association criteria stored in one or more of the devices. Memory is desirably included for storing the association criteria.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided to locate a terminal within a workspace. Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are provided in known locations, preferably in, on or adjacent the light fixtures or other workspace infrastructure. The terminal comprises an RFID tag interrogation transceiver, processor and memory. The transceiver interrogates the tags which respond with information correlatable with their unique locations. The terminal determines its locations relative to the known locations of responding tags by, for example, varying its transmit power and/or receiver sensitivity and/or by trilateration using, for example, phase or time difference of arrival measurements on the tag response signals. Once it has determined its own location it may transmit or otherwise announce its location as desired by the user.
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses for forming a radio frequency identifiable disc medium storage device are described. A metal layer is deposited onto a disc. At least one metal trace on the disc is connected to the metal layer. An adhesive interposer is attached to the disc around an opening in the center of the disc. The interposer includes an integrated circuit die. Pads of the integrated circuit die are coupled to the at least one pair of metal traces by the interposer. The interposer further includes a matching network. A coating is formed on the disc to encapsulate the metal layer, interposer, and integrated circuit die.
Abstract: Described is a device and system for heating an electronic mobile device. The system includes a mobile electronic device including a power supply arrangement and a removable heating arrangement detachably coupled to the mobile electronic device. When the heating arrangement is coupled to the mobile electronic device, the arrangement draws power from the power supply arrangement to generate heat.

Abstract: A wireless local area network audio and video communication system with mobile units is provided, wherein mobile units are operated in a power saving mode and become active at selected intervals corresponding to the duration of audio and video signals forming audio and video data packets. In a preferred arrangement the mobile units have a digital signal processor that operates at different clock rates during different portions of the intervals.

Abstract: A method for pipelined processing of access commands to a population of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags is provided. The method includes transmitting a first queued access command to a first tag in the population of RFID tags, transmitting a second queued access command to a second tag in the population of RFID tags, and transmitting a status request command to the first tag. The queued access command causes the first tag to perform an operation and upon completion of the operation, to suspend transaction processing. The second queued access command is transmitted while the first tag is performing the command operation. The status request command causes the first tag to resume normal processing.

Abstract: A bar code scanning system and method for reading and processing bar code symbology uses a scanning station installed above the check-out stand and a receiving station at some distance away from the scanning station. The scanning station projects light onto a surface of the check-out stand. The projected light can have a well defined border indicating where a user should place items to be scanned. Alternatively, a pattern coincident with the projected light can be projected onto the surface and which includes a target indicating where items should be placed for scanning. Light reflected by items in the target region is processed to decode optical symbology on the item and produce a signal that is representative of said sensed symbology. Information about the scanned item can be processed and displayed by the receiving station for use in, e.g., a point-of-sale transaction.
