Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for reliably transmitting data. A method comprises identifying a metric for a first frame of a plurality of frames, wherein the metric is indicative of decoding significance for the first frame among the plurality of frames. When the metric corresponds to a relatively high decoding significance, the method further comprises transmitting the first frame in accordance with an enhanced transmission scheme. When the metric corresponds to a relatively low decoding significance, the method further comprises transmitting the first frame in accordance with a default transmission scheme. The reliability of the enhanced transmission scheme is greater than the reliability of the default transmission scheme.

Abstract: A method for calibrating an RFID reader having a transmit port and a receive port includes connecting a cable between the transmit port and the receive port, transmitting a known signal from the transmit port to the receive port through the cable, and computing a cable loss associated with the cable based on the difference between the known signal and the signal detected at the receive port. The power level of the transmit port may then be adjusted in accordance with the cable loss and a known antenna gain.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the visual discomfort of the illumination generated by imaging scanners. The method includes (1) turning on a driving current for a illumination source during each of a series of exposure periods to provide illumination directed toward a target object; (2) capturing an image from the target object with photosensitive circuitry during at least one of the exposure periods; and (3) generating a pulse-width-modulation driving current that has a duty cycle changing with time between two consecutive exposure periods for making perceived gradual illumination changes between the two consecutive exposure periods. The duty cycle decreases from the value of 100% to a minimal value after each of the exposure periods and increases from the minimal value to the value of 100% before each of the exposure periods.

Abstract: An encoding method comprises generating a character map of an alphanumeric character string, identifying runs of like character type symbols in sequential positions, and removing the runs of character type symbols from the character map. The center for the center infix run is determined, and the characters of each character type are encoded into binary encoded substrings. A decoding method comprises parsing the one or more run fields in the alphanumeric header to determine a number of characters of each type of a plurality of character types represented in the binary encoded string, generating a character map having a string of character type symbols representing the binary encoded string, including determining a reduced character map, centering the character type symbols for a center infix run about the center of the reduced character map, completing a final character map, and decoding each binary encoded string.
Abstract: A method and system for conducting an inventory of items by a network tag reader, wherein a tag is attached to each item and each tag is permanently assigned a tag identification number (Tag ID). A method according to the present invention includes selecting one of a plurality of remote access sensor modules, where the selected remote access sensor module has a coverage pattern that defines a physical area. The method also includes interrogating tags through the selected remote access sensor module. These tags are within the physical area defined by the coverage pattern. As a result of the interrogating step, the network tag reader receives information regarding these tags. This information is stored in a plurality of inventory records.
Abstract: A sealed, solderless I/O connector for allowing the connection of cables or desk accessories to a mobile communication device while providing a weather tight seal allowing the use of the mobile communication device outdoors. The sealed, solderless I/O connector provides for greater tolerance of mechanical stress due to vibration or dropping because the contact points between the connector and the printed circuit board accomplished with a “U” shaped spring contact. The sealed, solderless I/O connector also provides a locking mechanism to prevent unintended detachment of the cable or desk accessory.
Abstract: Described is a mobile device comprising a base unit and a keypad detachably coupled to the base unit. The keypad includes an input arrangement and a first wireless arrangement operating in accordance with a first wireless protocol.
Abstract: A speech recognition system that includes a host computer which is operative to communicate at least one graphical user interface (GUI) display file to a mobile terminal of the system. The mobile terminal includes a microphone for receiving speech input; wherein the at least one GUI display file is operative to be associated with at least one of a dictionary file and syntax file to facilitate speech recognition in connection with the at least one GUI display file.
Abstract: Described is a method for transmitting a voice packet from a first access point (“AP”) to a mobile unit (“MU”), forwarding the voice packet from the first AP to a second AP when acknowledgement of receipt of the voice packet is not received by the first AP and transmitting the voice packet from the second AP to the MU. Also, a system having a first access point (“AP”) transmitting a voice packet to a mobile unit (“MU”) and forwarding the voice packet when acknowledgement of receipt of the voice packet from the MU is not received by the first AP and a second AP receiving the forwarded voice packet from the first AP and transmitting the voice packet to the MU.
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for determining the location of a first wireless device (e.g., a mobile unit) within a wireless network comprising a second wireless device (e.g., an access point). The method includes determining a signal strength contour associated with RF communication between the access point and the mobile unit, and adding a correction factor to the signal strength contour to produce a corrected signal strength contour, wherein the correction factor includes the sums of the differences between the transmit power and the antenna gain associated with the mobile unit and the access point. In an alternate scheme involving stored fingerprint data, a correction factor is introduced based on the differences between antenna gains and transmit power associated with the mobile unit under consideration and the mobile unit used for generating the fingerprint data. The systems and methods disclosed herein are applicable, for example, to networks operating in accordance with 802.

Abstract: Techniques and technologies are provided for relaying control messages between wireless switches in different mobility areas of a mobility domain. For example, the mobility domain can be divided into a first mobility area having a first designated wireless switch and a second mobility area having a second designated wireless switch. When the first designated wireless switch receives a control message from a first client wireless switch associated with the first designated wireless switch, and the first designated wireless switch can relay the control message from the first designated wireless switch to a second client wireless switch, associated with the first designated wireless switch, with which the first designated wireless switch has an internal peering session in the first mobility area.
Abstract: The duty cycle of a portable battery-powered RFID tag reader is reduced during time periods when it is less likely to produce a “read” in order to preserve battery life. The reader operates with an aggressive duty cycle during periods of a high probability of a tag read and reduces duty cycle during periods of a low probability of a tag read. In this manner a user does not perceive the reader to be sluggish. An alternative embodiment reduces peak operating power during time periods when a tag is less likely to produce a “read” in order to preserve battery life.
Abstract: A intrusion detection method is disclosed for use in a wireless local area data communications system, wherein mobile units communicate with access points, and wherein the system is arranged to locate transmitters using signals transmitted by the transmitters. A database relating authorized transmitters to location is maintained. Selected signals are detected at the access points and location data corresponding to the selected signals for use in locating a source of the signals is recorded. The source location is determined using the location data, and the source location is compared to a corresponding location in the database. An alarm is signaled if the source location is inconsistent with the corresponding database location.
