  • Patent number: 8862200
Abstract: A method for determining a position of a magnetic source includes measuring a magnetic field generated by the magnetic source and determining components of the three-dimensional magnetic flux density of the magnetic field at a plurality of points in space based on such measurement. The method also includes estimating a position of the magnetic source and determining components of a theoretical three-dimensional magnetic flux density at the plurality of points in space based on the estimated position. The position of the magnetic source may then be determined by minimizing the difference between the components of the measured and corresponding theoretical three-dimensional magnetic flux density components.

  • Patent number: 8858645
Abstract: An acetabular hip implant includes an acetabular shell component having a first feature and a first insert having a second feature that cooperates with the first feature of the acetabular shell component and further includes a third feature. The implant further includes a second insert having a fourth feature that cooperates with the third feature of the first insert and further includes a fifth feature. A femoral head component includes a sixth feature that cooperates with the fifth feature. Interaction between the first and second features, between the third and fourth features, and between the fifth and sixth features mechanically constrains the acetabular hip implant to prevent dislocation of the femoral head during rotation.

  • Patent number: 8857440
Abstract: A tissue protector is adapted to be positioned on the skin surrounding an incision. The tissue protector provides a load bearing surface for surgical tools and instruments to prevent blunt force and pressure trauma to the skin and soft tissues within the incision. In one embodiment, the tissue protector is a sheet of wear-resistant material having an opening corresponding to the incision and expandable as the incision is retracted. In another embodiment, a tissue protector device includes a continuous expandable arrangement of interconnected L-shaped links. In still another embodiment, a one-piece tissue protector includes a flexible panel supported on the skin and a flexible sleeve extending into the incision. Yet another embodiment of the invention resides in a track that is supported about the incision. An instrument support platform is slidably mounted to the track to support a surgical tool relative to the incision.

  • Publication number: 20140303624
Abstract: A cutting burr that includes a pair of axially spaced diamond-shaped portions designed to be keyed into a spindle of a locking mechanism of a high speed surgical drilling instrument and adapted to fit into a single pawl thereof to lock said cutting burr in place so as to prevent axial movement thereof and provide concentric rotation of said cutting burr without any wobbling. The orientation of both portions may be identical with respect to a center plan and diamond shape in the portion at the proximal end of the shank of the cutting tool may be larger than the intermediately located diamond shape of the other portion. The apexes of the facets of the six-sided diamond shape may be disposed below the surface of the shank of the cutting burr.

  • Patent number: 8852278
Abstract: An intervertebral fusion cage having a plate pivotally attached thereto. The plate and cage are pivotally coupled but move independently of each other. The plate is made up of two smaller plate halves: a superior plate half and an inferior plate half. Both plate halves form the larger plate. The plates are joined using a cross pin that provides a pivot point about which the plate halves rotate. The same pin also joins the plate halves to the cage, thus allowing the plate halves to pivot about the cage. It is believed that the device of the present invention will reduce the difficulties in placing a lateral plate down a port and manipulating it into position. Mating the plate to the cage will reduce the chances of micromotion and improve fusion rate, resulting in improved patient outcomes.

  • Patent number: 8852210
Abstract: A system for guiding an implant to an optimal placement within a patient includes a trajectory guide for guiding instruments along a selected trajectory and a trajectory fixation device for fixing the trajectory guide in a selected position. The trajectory guide defines a path configured to align with the selected trajectory. A movable support mounts the trajectory guide and selectively moves the trajectory guide to align the trajectory guide with the selected trajectory prior to fixing the trajectory guide in the selected position. After fixing the trajectory guide, instruments can be inserted along the trajectory through the path defined by the trajectory guide.

  • Patent number: 8852209
Abstract: The invention relates to an adaptor for tracking an instrument location during image guided surgery. The adaptor has a drive shaft, a proximal handle and a distal instrument tip. The drive shaft has a linear proximal portion, a curved mid-portion and a linear distal portion that is co-linear with the linear proximal portion. Three tracking elements (such as reflective balls) are placed on the sinusoidal portion. When the handle is rotated, the two linear portions remain fixed on the longitudinal axis, but the tracking elements on the sinusoidal portion travel in orbits about the longitudinal axis, thereby allowing a computer to track the location of the instrument tip.

  • Patent number: 8852244
Abstract: A dilator retractor and the dilators that are used for minimally invasive spinal surgery or other surgery are configured to accommodate the anatomical structure of the patient as by configuring the cross sectional area in an elliptical shape, or by forming a funnel configuration with the wider end at the proximate end. In some embodiments the distal end is contoured to also accommodate the anatomical structure of the patient so that a cylindrically shaped, funnel shaped, ovoid shaped dilator retractor can be sloped or tunneled to accommodate the bone structure of the patient or provide access for implants. The dilator retractor is made with different lengths to accommodate the depth of the cavity formed by the dilators.
