Abstract: A video traffic monitor and method for counting people using video imaging provides an inexpensive hardware implementation for analyzing real-time video where the operational environment presents a reasonably restricted traffic flow, such as in the entryway of a building. The video traffic monitor utilizes a windowed subsample of an image frame, and the image frame is further subdivided into gates. The video traffic monitor processes this windowed area to highlight the objects moving through the gates. The gates are then analyzed to determine a direction of movement for the people and support the logic for noise elimination and object discrimination. The video traffic monitor counts the detected people and records the count according to the direction of movement of the people.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for evaluating a driver's performance under actual real-time conditions and for using such evaluations to determine the driver's ability to safely operate a vehicle compares the information gathered by a radar system and other sensors with information previously stored in an event recording device. Conditions monitored are used to make a determination as to whether the driver is performing in conformity with normal driving standards and the driver's own past performance. The driver's performance is constantly monitored and compared to that driver's past performance to determine whether the driver's present performance is impaired, and if so, whether the impairment is detrimental to the driver's ability to safely operate the vehicle.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for reducing the concentration of carbon monoxide in a gaseous reactant stream comprising carbon monoxide and water vapor. The catalyst bed of a water gas shift reactor is preferably divided into two sections. Alternatively, an assembly which includes two sequential reactors can be employed. The first section or reactor operates in an adiabatic fashion whereas the second section or reactor is cooled, thereby facilitating the further conversion of carbon monoxide in the second section or reactor. The gaseous reactant stream exiting the second section or reactor typically has a carbon monoxide concentration in the range from about 0.06% to about 0.14% by volume.

Abstract: A combined fuel regulator and single point metering system comprises a diaphragm-type fuel regulator mounted at one end of a single point injector which carries a solenoid valve operated plunger movable with respect to a fuel distribution block located within the hollow interior of the injector base. The injector base is divided into a fuel outlet cavity located on one side of the fuel distribution block, and an air chamber located on the opposite side which is connected by a one-way valve to source of ambient air, and is also adapted for connection to a turbocharger or the like. The fuel distribution block is formed with a number of passages each directly connected to an air-fuel nozzle within which the fuel and air are intermixed for delivery through separate tubes to each of the cylinders of an internal combustion engine.
Abstract: A seating system especially well adapted for use in high-speed and high-performance water craft provides improved support for a user, in both standing and sitting positions. The seating system includes a fixed base upon which is mounted a frame positionable and lockable in a chosen forward/aft position. The frame supports independent backrest and seat units, each of which is independently vertically positionable along the frame. The seat unit further includes bolster and seat portions which are pivotable between a first position in which the seat portion is operative and a second position in which the seat portion hangs downwardly, in an inoperative orientation, and where the bolster provides support for the standing occupant.

Abstract: A method for determining coplanarity with 3-D sensing means of substrates for ball grid array, column grid array, and similar surface mount integrated circuit chips, in which opaque fiducials are provided as index pads. Heights of the index pads are correlated with signal pad heights in a neighborhood about the index pads. The index pads are opaque to incident radiation from the 3-D sensor. The index pads reflect sufficient radiation to be detected easily by the 3-D sensor. The index pads are disposed in a prearranged pattern over a domain of ball grid array signal pads. The index pads are restricted to a predetermined range of heights.

Abstract: An apparatus for use in inflating an air bag comprises a container (15) containing a supply of inflation fluid. The container has a first outer surface (19) and an inner surface (26) which is threaded and defines a threaded opening extending into the container from the first outer surface. A plug (40) has an outer periphery (45) which is threaded. The plug is screwed into the threaded opening in the container. The outer periphery of the plug includes a second outer surface (51) adjacent the first outer surface of the container. The outer periphery of the plug and the inner surface of the container that defines the threaded opening comprise an interface (11) between the plug and the container. The interface extends to the periphery of the container between the first and second outer surfaces. A ring (30) overlies both the interface and portions of the first and second outer surfaces.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing vehicular traffic information using presently existing cellular telephone system technology. Traffic sensors monitor the control and voice channel transmissions of cellular units within a cellular telephone system. Data from these transmissions is extracted and analyzed according to a statistical model and derived vehicle geolocating information to generate vehicular traffic information that is transmitted to a central control center. By combining the information from all of the traffic sensors and each individual cell within a cellular telephone system, a picture of the traffic conditions existing along major thoroughfares may be determined.

Abstract: The optical tape recorder of the present invention is capable of archiving data at rates in excess of 400 megabits per second by concurrently writing or reading a plurality data tracks in each data trace. A read-write module outputs an illumination beam comprised of combined multiple write beams (channels), a read beam and an autofocus beam. Optics within the read-write module spatially combine and accurately position the plurality of beams with respect to each other to form the multi-beam illumination beam. A read-write head comprised of a synchronized scanning transmissive polygon and rotating lens wheel scans the multi-beam illumination beam across a recording media to read or write multi-channel data tracks. An autofocus system is also included to ensure that the multi-beam illumination beam is accurately focused on the recording media.

Abstract: A catheter uses a steerable outer catheter with an inner catheter rotatable and extendable with respect to the outer catheter. The outer catheter may be positioned within a patient's heart and a portion of the outer catheter may provide movement like that of a windshield wiper by manipulation of a spring. By combining the windshield wiper type movement with the extension and rotation of the inner catheter relative to the outer catheter, a large area within a patient's heart may be readily mapped for conduction tissue and be subjected to laser ablation if appropriate. Various configurations provide flexibility in relatively positioning of windows used to apply laser energy and ring electrodes used to sense conduction tissue.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for timing acquisition of partial response class IV Signaling is described. The invention uses an acquisition logic block to determine an output sequence that best matches a preamble pattern. The logic block analyzes current quantizer output X and the two previous decisions X.sub.n and X.sub.n-1. The logic uses these values to determine the next value X.sub.n+1 so that the best match occurs. The invention is implemented with OR gates, AND gates, and D flip-flops and can operate in acquiring mode or tracking mode.
Abstract: Provided is a process for removing organic materials from semiconductor wafers. The process involves the use of subambient deionized water with ozone absorbed into the water. The ozonated water flows over the wafers and the ozone oxidizes the organic materials from the wafers to insoluble gases. The ozonated water may be prepared in-situ by diffusing ozone into a tank containing wafers and subambient deionized water. Also provided is a tank for the treatment of semiconductor wafers with a fluid and a gas diffuser for diffusion of gases directly into fluids in a wafer treatment tank.
Abstract: Apparatus for extruding thermoplastic material includes an extruder having inner and outer die lips adjacent an outlet end of the extruder for transporting an annular stream of thermoplastic material therethrough. The outer die lips are divided into a plurality of circumferential sectors. Each sector includes a passage for circulating heated oil for controlling the viscosity of the thermoplastic material being extruded. The temperature and flow of the heated oil flowing through each sector may be varied according to the required thickness of the product being extruded adjacent that sector. A ring-shaped channel carries the heated oil around the die lips for circulation into the individual sectors.
