Abstract: In a disclosed method that facilitates collaborative file updating, data is accepted from one of a plurality of users and stored. The data represents an initial version of the file and designates one or more recipients of the initial version. Then, for each one of sequentially updated versions of the file, data representing a difference between the updated version of the file and an immediately previous version of the file is accepted from a user. The data also designates one or more recipients of the updated version. Data representative of the updated version of the file is transmitted to the designated recipients of the updated version. The data transmitted to each recipient who is designated as a recipient of the updated version and who accessed the immediately previous version consists substantially of the difference between the updated and previous versions of the file. Abstract: A storage caching method and system manages shared access to real time data files while maintaining data file coherency and consistency in a computer network including a plurality of remote computer workstations and at least one file server. The storage caching system is implemented by storage caches, which are associated with workstations, and a cache server, which is associated with a file server, where the storage caches and the cache server interface with a distributed file system to provide shared access to real time data files by remote workstations.

Abstract: A networked computer system has a plurality of servers and a plurality of distributed clients, which may be devices or computers. Each client has a boot operating system (OS). Upon startup, the boot OS in each client automatically initiates a connection to one of the servers via the Internet. The boot OS can detect the type of medium (e.g., cable modem, DSL) to which the client is connected. The server automatically downloads a base OS and dynamically configures a suite of applications on the client without running the standard installation programs. One included application is an Internet telephony application, allowing a user to plug a standard telephone into the client appliance or computer, pick up the telephone, and automatically dial out using long distance Internet telephony. Optionally, the server may download a plurality of operating systems that are automatically initiated to run concurrently on the client. The clients use a random access memory (RAM) caching technique.
