Abstract: The disclosure provides a wind energy system with one or more floating modules having at least two vertical wind turbines mounted thereon. A multipoint mooring system couples the floating module to a seabed, the mooring system having at least two mooring points with at least two lines positioned at location s around the floating module with the wind turbines. A rotation system is coupled to the floating module and adapted to twist the floating module relative to wind direction while the multipoint mooring system is coupled between the seabed and the floating module. The rotation system can include induced gyroscopic torque from counter-rotating wind turbines and a self-adjusting induced gyroscopic torque differential from varying wind directions. Other rotation systems can include winches and translating assemblies that can be activated to tighten or loosen mooring lines in the multipoint mooring system coupled to the floating module in a catenary manner.

  • Publication number: 20120201611
Abstract: The disclosure provides a deck tensioning system, supporting multiple risers, that is coupled to an offshore platform and compensated for heave and horizontal movement. Such a tensioning system provides simplified access to the production trees on the risers. The tensioning system provides tensioning for a tensioning deck to which the multiple risers are coupled, while reducing the tensioning cylinders for individual risers. The deck tensioning system further provides a simplified tension flex connector (“TFC”) with an intermediate movable member for each riser. The TFC assists in absorbing and/or adjusting for forces that may cause the tensioning deck to pitch and roll from the interactions between the multiple risers coupled to the tensioning deck as a unitary structure. If a fire or other event causes damage to the tension flex connector, the tension flex connector is designed to maintain a supporting connection with the riser without the intermediate movable member.

  • Publication number: 20120186781
Abstract: The disclosure provides a heat transfer system having a tubing coil for heating fluid flowing therein, where the tubing coil can be pigged (descaled) while operationally online, instead of offline. The online system uses an assembly of valves and associated equipment to connect to a pig launcher and pig receiver while the system is online. A valve opens and the pig launches into the flow stream under pressure through the valve and travels along the tube with the fluid. The system continues to produce heated fluid with the pig in the flow path. A pig receiver receives the pig after the pigging, and then is isolated from the flow path of the heated fluid by another valve. The pig launcher, pig receiver, and pig are removed, and this process is repeated for any other passes in the tubing coil.

  • Publication number: 20120167813
Abstract: The present invention increases the heave resistance rate of a barge system from wave motion, as the system is used to install a topsides to offshore structures. One or more heave plates can be coupled at a location below the water surface to one or more barges to change the period of motion of the barge(s) relative to the period of wave motion to better stabilize the barge(s) and resist the heave. A heave plate can be coupled between the barges, or on end(s) or side(s) of the barge(s). In at least another embodiment, each barge can have a heave plate and the heave plates can be releasably coupled to each other. Further, the heave plate can be rotated to an upward orientation during transportation of the topsides to the installation site to reduce drag, and then rotated to a submerged position during the installation of the topsides.

  • Publication number: 20120111256
Abstract: The disclosure provides a semi-submersible offshore platform with columns having an enlarged base on the bottom of each column with pontoons coupled between the columns. The enlarged column base can be at least as high as a height of the pontoon and on at least embodiment can be about 50% of the draft of the platform. The enlarged base can change a current flow shape around the base and columns for lower VIM. An outside corner of the base can be trimmed at an angle. Alternatively, the lower portions of the columns can be extended horizontally outward to form an effectively enlarged base having similar characteristics. In some embodiments, the pontoon volume can be reduced inversely proportional to the base enlargement to have comparable total buoyancy.

  • Publication number: 20120000071
Abstract: The disclosure provides a method and system for installing components for an offshore wind turbine assembly independent of cranes and derricks. The components are stored in an offshore structure, such as a Spar. After transporting the offshore structure horizontally to a site, the structure can be uprighted to a vertical orientation. A variable ballast component coupled to a tower of the wind turbine assembly can reciprocally retract the tower into the offshore structure to lower the tower, and extend the tower away from the offshore structure to raise the tower until the full quantity of blades are assembled to a turbine coupled to the tower. When the blades are stored in a peripheral fashion around the tower, the method and system provides for automatic rotational indexing of the tower as the tower and turbine retract and extend, so the turbine is progressively aligned with each blade to be installed.
