Abstract: A method and a system for improving performances of an ice skate blade on ice, comprising selecting a substrate for the blade and controlling wettability of the surface of the substrate, by selecting a surface finish for the surface of the substrate and depositing a thin film coating on the surface of the substrate. The method allows autolubrication of the ice skate blade. The autolubricating ice skating blade comprises a substrate and a thin film coating deposited on the substrate, the substrate having a first friction coefficient on ice, and the blade having a second friction coefficient on ice, the second friction coefficient being decreased compared to the first friction coefficient.
