Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for providing white light color output from an electromechanical systems (EMS) device with reduced likelihood of stiction. In one aspect, interferometric modulators are configured to provide a white color output while having a non-zero modulator gap dimension. Such a feature can reduce problems associated with zero modulator gap dimensions such as stiction. Various methodologies can be used to yield such a non-zero modulator gap and a white color output. In some implementations, for example, an optical element that introduced wavelength dependent phase shift is used. In some implementations this wavelength dependent phase shifting optical element includes a stack of color filters, a hologram, a diffraction grating, or layers of material having specific thicknesses and wavelength dependent indices of refraction.
Abstract: A voltage regulator circuit includes a soft start module, a pulse width modulation (PWM) module, and a voltage regulator module. The soft start module is used to receive a current feedback voltage corresponding to an input current, and compare the current feedback voltage with a comparison voltage, so as to output a switching signal. The PWM module is used to receive a clock signal and the switching signal, and determine a first PWM signal and a second PWM signal outputted by the PWM module is a high voltage level or a low voltage level according to the clock signal and the switching signal. The voltage regulator module is used to receive and adjust an output voltage corresponding to the first PWM signal and the second PWM signal.
Abstract: The performance of an MR device has been improved by inserting one or more Magneto-Resistance Enhancing Layers (MRELs) into approximately the center of one or more of the magnetic layers such as an inner pinned (AP1) layer, spin injection layer (SIL), field generation layer (FGL), and a free layer. An MREL is a layer of a low band gap, high electron mobility semiconductor such as ZnO or a semimetal such as Bi. The MREL may further comprise a first conductive layer that contacts a bottom surface of the semiconductor or semimetal layer, and a second conductive layer that contacts a top surface of the semiconductor or semimetal layer.
Abstract: An integrated illumination apparatus includes a light injection portion having a first end for receiving light. The light injection portion supports propagation of light along the length of the light injection portion. Turning microstructure disposed on a first side of the light injection portion is configured to turn light incident on the first side and to direct light out a second opposite side of the light injection portion. A slit disposed along the length of the light injection portion forms an optical interface on the second opposite side of the light injection portion. The optical interface further transmits light turned by the turning microstructure. A light distribution portion is disposed with respect to the slit to receive the light transmitted through the slit. At least one bridge mechanically connects the light injection portion to the light distribution portion.

Abstract: A method for laminating glass, a laminate assembly, and an adhesive-coated plastic material used in a laminate assembly. Specifically an adhesive, once applied to a plastic layer is grooved or textured to allow formerly trapped air to escape from between layers of a laminate assembly during a laminate process. This can allow for the adhesive layer to be thinner, while still providing for a final product that is relatively air bubble-free and optically pleasing or substantially free of optical defects caused by waviness of the plastic layer between two PVB sheets and/or wrinkles of the plastic sheet.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a request is received from a requesting node in a network to assist in distributing a task of the requesting node. Upon receiving the message, a capability to perform the task of one or more helping nodes in the network is evaluated, and a helping node of the one or more helping nodes is selected to perform the task based on the evaluated capability of the selected helping node. The distribution of the task is then authorized from the requesting node to the selected helping node.
Abstract: In one embodiment, techniques are shown and described relating to a distributed architecture for layered Hidden Markov Models. In particular, in one embodiment, a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) at a layer i receives a sequence of hidden state produced by an HMM at a layer i?1, and uses the sequence of hidden state produced by the HMM at layer i?1 as input to the HMM at layer i, where the HMM at layer i?1 uses first time period bins, and the HMM at layer i uses second time period bins that are greater in length than the first time period bins. In another embodiment, the HMM at layer i originates the input (e.g., from measured properties), and produces the sequence of hidden state to output it to an HMM at a layer i+1 for use as its input.

Abstract: A shockwave generator pre-treats one or more production zones within a well to facilitate recovery of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons from the well. The well may be heated to a particular temperature, where after a cooling agent is introduced through the shockwave generator which effects a cooling action in the walls of the well and induces cracking which is propagated by the tremors or shocks of the cooling agent as it exits the generator. The initiated cracks may be further propagated using one or more additional stimulation methods, including a freeze-thaw method which is implemented through a subsystem having overlapping components with the shockwave generator subsystem.

Abstract: A low complexity/cost beamsteering antenna includes a central line feed affixed to a radial waveguide structure, radiating elements positioned along the circumference of the radial waveguide structure, and a plurality of active elements interspersed along the surface of the radial waveguide structure between the central line feed and the radiating elements. The active elements may comprise PIN diodes or microelectromechanical system (MEMS) components, and may be selectively activated/deactivated by DC switches in order to direct the propagation of an RF signal over the radial waveguide structure in a manner similar to a power divider. As a result, the RF signal may be funneled to selected radiating elements, thereby effectively directionally aiming the main lobe of the emitted radiation pattern to beamsteer the wireless transmission.
