In one embodiment, this is accomplished by configuring each communication device to maintain a table of unique identifiers, where the unique identifiers include Media Access Control (MAC) address, MAC and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) address, Internet Protocol (IP) address or any other unique device identifier, receiving one or more data packet on one or more port of the device, checking the table for unique source identifier of the received data packet, determining whether the received data packet is received from the same port of the device as in the table against the corresponding entry, and updating learned time entry with current system clock time of the device and forwarding the data packet to the next communication device if the packet is received from the same port.
