  • Patent number: 6005874
Abstract: In a secure communications system where messages between subscribers are encrypted according to a selection of encryption procedures, a gateway trunk is provided. The gateway trunk comprises a telecommunications trunk (35) with one or more cryptographic devices (A,B,C) inserted in each traffic channel and a separate signaling channel (37), and a traffic channel is selected according to a code dialed by a subscriber. The gateway trunk may be associated with a PABX (31) such that messages are routed through a channel of the trunk corresponding to the cryptographic device required. Pairs of different cryptographic devices may be inserted in each channel of the trunk to effect conversion from one encryption procedure to another.

  • Patent number: 6005927
Abstract: An apparatus and method for maintaining records in a telephone directory involves maintaining a personal directory of at least one record associated with at least one party with which a telephone call is conducted. The record has a field for identifying the party and a frequency of use field for storing a number representing the number of times a call is conducted with the party. In response to a call conducted with a party, the personal directory is searched for a record associated with the party and upon finding such a record, the contents of the frequency of use field of the record are incremented and the records of the personal directory are sorted in an order dependent upon the contents of the frequency of use fields.

  • Patent number: 5999284
Abstract: An optical logic device is provided by an interferometer in which an output optical signal is determined in accordance with an interference condition of the interferometer. The interference condition is reset by an optical setting signal which is counter-propagated through a semi-conductor optical amplifier forming one arm of the interferometer. Latching of the interference condition in the set state is achieved by a feedback signal taken from the output optical signal and combined with the setting signal. Resetting of the interference condition is achieved by nulling the output optical signal by counter-propagating a reset optical signal via second semiconductor optical amplifier constituting the second arm of the interferometer. Alternatively the input optical signal to the interferometer may be interrupted to null the output. A further alternative arrangement utilizes an electrical re-setting signal which actuates an electrical phase shifting device in the second arm of the interferometer.

  • Patent number: 5995697
Abstract: A partially coated optical fiber for laser transmission, is described, wherein the partially coated optical fiber comprises an optical fiber which comprises an optionally clad fiber core and an external coating. The external coating and the fiber core are longitudinally substantially coextensive but circumferentially non-coextensive whereby the coating defines a grating window extending longitudinally for at least the major part of the length of the fiber. The window is optionally interrupted by one or more coating continuities which partition said window. The coating has a thickness such that a plane bridging the circumferential displacement of the grating window is extra-peripheral of the optical fiber.

  • Patent number: 5995487
Abstract: Method and apparatus for enhancing the ability of a subscriber to connect to a carrier network by enabling the service provider to indicate to the subscriber when a requested connection to the carrier network would utilize unguaranteed bandwidth and, absent objection by the subscriber, to complete the requested connection utilizing the unguaranteed bandwidth. Upon receipt of a request for set-up of a call of an indicated bandwidth, the service provider will acknowledge the call set-up request. The service provider will then issue a call proceeding message to indicate that the requested connection is being arranged. The call proceeding message will contain an unguaranteed bandwidth indicator if the carrier network cannot guarantee the requested bandwidth. If a cancellation of the call request is not received in response to the unguaranteed bandwidth indicator, the call will be completed.

  • Patent number: 5995602
Abstract: Telecommunication switches (e.g., PBX's or local exchange carrier's Centrex-enabled switches) route calls in accordance with economic incentives (e.g., least cost routing) resulting from a bidding process between participating telecommunication Carriers (Carriers) by operation of a central processor, a computer referred to as a bidding moderator (Moderator). Each of the Carriers bidding for traffic over a route informs the Moderator of the rate it is willing to charge for (or other economic incentive it is willing to offer) service between two specific points in a telecommunication network, for example, from one NPA-NXX to another NPA-NXX, at some particular time. This "bid" rate may be lower than that Carrier's established rate for any of several reasons (e.g., the Carrier has excess capacity on that route at that time). The Carrier may change its bids as often as it likes during the day as traffic patterns change.

  • Patent number: 5995566
Abstract: This invention relates to telecommunications systems. In a subscriber loop carrying high speed data signals, noise cancellation is achieved by a data signal demodulator having first and second inputs 81,82, arranged to receive differential data signal and local field RFI input signals respectively. A feedback signal of the demodulator is sampled, processed, vector modulated and then combined with the local field RFI input signal of the demodulator. The combined signal is summed with the differential input signal to thereby reduce interference coupled with the first input.

  • Patent number: 5988853
Abstract: In an automatic mapping system, a plurality of names are placed on a map in association with a plurality of corresponding point-features with minimized overlapping among the names. First a minimum bounding rectangle (MBR) is placed on a predetermined position of a target point located on a predetermined direction-uppermost position from point-features, where the MBR is selected for representing a name corresponding to the target point. Next, it is determined whether the MBR is overlapped with at least one of previously assigned MBRs and if the MBR is not overlapped with any of the previously assigned MBRs, the current position of the MBR is determined and the name is placed on the MBR.

  • Patent number: 5991269
Abstract: To avoid spurious energy radiation from a wireline communication resource (42-44) supporting data over voice, such as in xDSL, modems (40, 46) supporting a multi-carrier transmission scheme undertake a line balance assessment (136-138) for each sub-channel carrier within the system. Specifically, an addressed modem (40) measures, for example, the signal to noise ratio of a differential transmission mode and a common transmission mode to provide the balance assessment (138). More particularly, a receive chain in the addressed modem is selectively switched (84) to receive the differential mode as appearing across the terminals of an isolation transformer (66) or the common mode (as seen with respect to ground) from a center tap (88) in a line-side winding (70) of the isolation transformer (66). Any sub-channel carrier that fails to provide a predetermined level of balance (140) is de-selected (141) by the modem and not used for traffic.

  • Patent number: 5991389
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing a telephone operating company with the ability to rapidly deploy advanced services into a public switched telephone network includes a programmable switch matrix, a service control unit (SCU), and a media resource unit (MRU). The call processing of a call (associated with one or more ports on the programmable switch matrix) is controlled externally by the SCU when particular triggering criteria is met (i.e., the call requires or desires control by the SCU). Call control processing is achieved through a high-speed communications link between the programmable switch matrix and the SCU using a communications protocol defining a comprehensive set of primitives (instructions) for call manipulation and control at the programmable switch matrix. The SCU executes different service application software programs that operate within the SCU for different types of service calls that are under the control of the SCU.
