Abstract: Selective isolation between a microcellular communication network and a signaling channel of a macrocellular communication network that is relatively larger than the microcellular network is achieved by receiving communication signals from the microcellular network, and using a communications protocol stack to translate the communication signals into further signals for transmission over the signaling channel. Some of the communications signals are translated into the further signals, but some of the communications signals are selectively denied translation into the further signals.
Abstract: There is disclosed a method and apparatus for displaying greetings to mobile terminals identifying services associated with location based services. The system identifies a plurality of service zones in the system, and also transmits predefined services to mobile terminals when located in the service zones. The system transmits from each base station local zone profile information to each of the mobile terminals located in those service zones. Each mobile terminal has stored therein subscriber zone profile information for which that mobile terminal can receive location based services. The mobile terminal also stores an associated greeting for each zone of subscriber zone profile information. The mobile terminal compares transmitted local zone information with the list of stored subscriber zone profile information, and when a match is found, the mobile terminal displays the greeting associated with the subscriber zone profile information.
Abstract: A power-on reset circuit with glitch sensing capabilities is formed as part of the same integrated circuit chip containing other logical circuits. A port included in the integrated circuit chip enables a power-on reset signal generated by the integrated power-on reset circuit to be output from the chip and applied to other chips installed in a single chip or multi-chip electronic system. The power-on reset circuit compares a capacitor stored reset voltage to a reference voltage and outputs the power-on reset signal when the reset voltage falls below the reference voltage. Storage of the reset voltage by the capacitor is controlled by a glitch sensor which detects changes in voltage provided by a power supply in excess of a given threshold and, in response thereto, triggers a capacitor discharge. This causes the reset voltage to fall below the reference voltage, and the power-on reset signal to be output.

Abstract: TIA IS-136 specifies the assignment to mobile stations of a unique international mobile station identification (IMSI) in addition to a mobile identification number (MIN). The IMSI number is communicated from the mobile station to the network, and is processed by the network to provide for non-ambiguous subscriber identification. Accordingly, the IMSI number is transmitted by the mobile station during registration, and processed during authentication to insure accurate and unique subscriber identification. Once registered with an IMSI instead of a MIN, the network utilizes the IMSI during subsequent call handling to insure, for example, proper call delivery and handoff.
Abstract: A method and system for controlling the quality of handovers are disclosed in which a poor radio environment in a target cell is revealed prior to completion of the handover procedure. During the handover signalling phase, the output power of the mobile station of interest and the target cell's base transceiver station are reduced. Consequently, prior to completion of the handover, if the target cell has a poor radio environment (below a predetermined C/I or C/N), the handover attempt will fail, and the mobile station will revert and remain connected to the original cell.
Abstract: Heat-generating power transistors (3) hanging from a circuit board (2) are mounted pressed flush against the inside surface of a heat dissipating thin sheet metal box (1), by using spring metal band clips (4) completely mountable from outside the metal box (1), by insertion of a foot end (4b) of each clip into a first slot (6) in the box and snapping an opposite end (4a), bent to form a spring fluke, into a second parallel slot (5). Slots (6,5) and a clip recessing trough (7) between them can be stamped in the thin sheet metal box bottom (1b).
Abstract: Each transmitter/receiver pair of a radio base station is connected via an antenna bus and radio frequency feeder to antenna near parts equipment such as active antennas, boosters and tower mounted amplifiers. Automatic configuration and calibration of the antenna near parts equipment is accomplished by establishing communication between the base station and each of its connected antenna near part components. Each antenna near part component sends its identification to the base station over the antenna bus at power-on. Furthermore, communications selectively sent over the radio frequency feeder are monitored to determine the connectivity between individual transmitter/receiver pairs of the base station and each antenna near parts equipment. These radio frequency feeder communications are further processed to determine calibration data for configuring each antenna near parts equipment for optimal operation.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method, an apparatus and an arrangement for calculating the value of an amount in a first currency in terms of a desired second currency. The method comprises the steps of entering the value of an amount in the first currency into a controller of a receiver. A scaling factor describing a conversion between at least two different public land mobile network (PLMN) units is retrieved from a memory within the receiver. The amount of the first currency is then converted to the equivalent amount of the second currency by the controller which is adapted to use the scaling factor for the conversion. Finally, a user interface of the receiver is used to inform the user of the conversion result. The apparatus performing the inventive method is included in a mobile station and the arrangement is included in a PLMN.
Abstract: A single two-ended echo canceller is provided that uses an adaptive FIR filter to model the impulse response of the echo path and cancel the echo originating from the PSTN side of the connection, and a non-linear processor controlled by input signal levels to cancel the echo originating from the mobile phone side of the connection. Since the linear processing function is not used for cancelling echoes of the mobile phone side, the algorithms directed to estimating and cancelling echoes on the two sides of the connection can be executed in a single DSP, with all of the attendant advantages.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for determining the distance between a radio receiver (RX) and a radio transmitter (TX) by uplink time measurements, whereby uplink messages are transmitted by the transmitter (TX) and used primarily for position determination. In one embodiment, the uplink messages are intra-cell handover messages if the transmitter (TX) is a component of a mobile radio terminal which is operating in accordance with an existing TDMA standard. In a second embodiment, the uplink messages are a new type of message transmitted in time slots not used by the mobile radio terminal and preferably, also not used by other mobile radio terminals in the system, if the transmitter (TX) is a component of a mobile radio terminal which is operating in accordance with a new or emerging TDMA standard. The evolving GSM radio air-interface standard is an example of such a TDMA standard.

Abstract: An apparatus in a wireless telecommunications network is provided with Short Message Service via a circuit switched channel unless the apparatus is operating in a packet mode. If the apparatus is operating in the packet mode, the apparatus is provided with Short Message Service via a packet channel.
Abstract: A D-AMPS+ cellular communications air interface is presented wherein a packet data control channel and packet data traffic channel is supported in addition to the conventional digital control channel and digital traffic channel. In particular, the packet data control channel, packet data traffic channel and digital traffic channel support multiple modulation level operation (high versus low). Procedures are provided for intracell and intercell modulation transition of mobile station communications carried by a traffic channel. In particular, these procedures facilitate intracell and intercell modulation transition to a traffic channel using the same level of modulation, as well as intracell and intercell (fall-forward and fall-backward) modulation transition to a traffic channel using a different level of modulation.

Abstract: A method and system used in a mobile telecommunications network for reconnecting at least one of a plurality of low priority calls that were disconnected due to preemption by high priority call(s) are disclosed. The system includes a queue for arranging the plurality of low priority calls. The system further includes a controller coupled to the queue for determining whether a traffic channel was located within a predetermined amount of time for use by the low priority call. The traffic channel may be located within one of a plurality of neighboring cells or within a current cell. If the traffic channel was located within the predetermined amount of time, then the controller will remove the low priority call from the queue and automatically reconnect the disconnected call using the located traffic channel.

Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the activity of a mobile subscriber in a GSM-based PLMN system from an Intelligent Network (IN) telecommunications system comprising several Intelligent Peripherals (IPs) connected to a Service Control Point (SCP) over a network. The detailed technique is automatically initiated when the Service Control Point (SCP) of an IN system attempts to reach a mobile subscriber and fails. In the first phase, the SCP arms an SMS-IP using a dummy SMS message. Upon the detection of renewed subscriber activity of a mobile subscriber who was previously inactive or unreachable, a PLMN triggering notification is generated. In this second phase, the PLMN transmits an alert to the SMS-IP which in turn notifies the SCP.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for adaptively selecting a paging area throughout which to page a mobile terminal. A record is maintained, indicative of the position where a mobile terminal was located when last-accessing the network infrastructure of a communication system in which the mobile terminal is operable. When a page is to be broadcast to the mobile terminal, the record is accessed, and the paging area throughout which the page is broadcast is adaptively selected responsive thereto.
Abstract: Adaptive speech coding includes receiving an original speech signal, performing on the original speech signal a current coding operation, and adapting the current coding operation in response to information used in the current coding operation. Adaptive speech decoding includes receiving coded information, performing a current decoding operation on the coded information, and adapting the current decoding operation in response to information used in the current decoding operation.
Abstract: A mobile cellular communications system and method are disclosed, which limit access of private network cells only to mobile subscribers of those private networks. In cells belonging to the public network, only information about the public cells is broadcast on the public system information control channels. This public cell information is thus the only cell information that the non-subscribers' terminals are able to receive. When a mobile terminal belonging to a subscriber of one or more private networks surfaces in a public cell, the public network transmits a radio link control message to that mobile terminal, which contains information about the candidate cells for selection associated with the private network(s). The private network transmits system information via the private cell to a subscribing mobile terminal about the private and public cells' neighboring cells.
Abstract: An echo canceller pool configuration is provided that allows a user to predetermine and individualize the echo cancellation parameter settings for any echo canceller in the pool, based on prior knowledge of the echo path characteristics of the specific transmission route to be used for an ensuing call. The echo canceller with the individualized parameter settings is then switched into that route for the duration of the call. For example, at call setup, once a trunk route has been identified that will be used to complete the call, a "flag" is retrieved that is associated with that specific route. That "flag" identifies specific echo canceller parameter settings to be used for that route. Those parameter settings are downloaded to the echo canceller device selected from the pool, and that device is then switched into the specific trunk involved. An operator can thereby optimize echo cancellation in the system and significantly improve speech quality overall.
Abstract: A system and method for conforming the service profiles for non-call-related store-and-forward messages to those applicable to calls in an Intelligent Network (IN) telecommunications system comprising several Intelligent Peripherals (IPs) connected to a Service Control Point (SCP) over a network. When an IP handling outgoing calls and messages receives an outgoing message or when an IP handling incoming calls is queried by a subscriber, the IP interrogates the SCP to determine whether any IN services such as restriction control and number translation have been requested, selected or imposed by or on either the sending or the receiving parties. The SCP acknowledges the interrogation and returns the generated results to the IP for further processing, optionally by retrieving and analyzing a service script corresponding to either the originating or the terminating party.
