  • Patent number: 6136396
Abstract: An article comprised of a polymeric material bearing a coating. The coating comprises a residual layer formed by applying and allowing to dry a mixture containing from about 7.5 to about 23.5 weight percent of a humidity sensitive antistatic surfactant compound and from about 10 to about 30 weight percent of a water soluble ink. The article possesses an electrostatic potential of from about -5 to about +5 kilovolts as measured at one inch from the coating. A process for producing a formed article which is relatively free from the effects of static electricity. The process includes the steps of topically applying a mixture comprising a humidity sensitive antistatic surfactant compound to a stock comprising a foamed polymeric material, conditioning the foam stock in a humidity-controlled environment effective to reduce electrostatic potential of the stock to between from about -5 to about +5 kilovolts, and thereafter forming the article from the conditioned foam stock.

  • Patent number: 6103281
Abstract: A packaging system and method utilizes a modified atmosphere package including a first package and a second package. The first package includes a non-barrier portion substantially permeable to oxygen, while the second package is substantially impermeable to oxygen. After a food product such as raw meat is placed within the first package, the first package is sealed and then inserted into the second package without sealing the second package so as to create a pocket between the first and second packages. The system and method first employ an oxygen reduction technique such as evacuation, gas flushing, and/or scavenging to quickly reduce the oxygen level in the pocket to a first non-zero level, and then employ an activated oxygen scavenger to further reduce the oxygen level to zero percent after the package is sealed. The oxygen scavenger is activated with an oxygen uptake accelerator to increase the rate at which the oxygen is absorbed.

  • Patent number: 6071011
Abstract: A fill-through-the-top reclosable package includes first and second opposing body panels joined to each other along a pair of sides and a bottom bridging the pair of sides. The package is provided with a reclosable fastener extending along a package top disposed opposite the bottom. The fastener includes first and second opposing tracks. The first track includes a male profile, while the second track includes a female profile adapted to releasably interlock with the male profile. To provide tamper evidence, the first and second tracks may be joined to each other along an area of weakness. When making the package, the first track is first attached to the first panel, the package is filled with a product via a fill opening between the second track and the second panel, and then the second track is attached to the second panel.

  • Patent number: 6059458
Abstract: A drawtape bag comprises a pair of pliable thermoplastic body panels joined to each other along a pair of opposing sides and a bottom bridging the opposing sides. The bag may be opened along the mouth end formed opposite the bottom. At least one of the body panels forms a hem along the mouth end of the bag, and the hem houses a pliable thermoplastic drawtape. One or more drawtape holes located within the hem expose the drawtape allowing it to be pulled through the holes to close the bag and to be used as a handle. The elastic top feature is provided by an elastomeric strip connected to a looped section of the drawtape housed within the hem. Specifically, the drawtape section is gathered into one or more loops defining a series of crests and troughs, and each trough is sealed to the elastomeric strip.

  • Patent number: 6054153
Abstract: A modified atmosphere package includes first and second compartments separated by a partition member that is substantially permeable to oxygen. The first compartment contains an oxygen scavenger activated with an oxygen scavenger accelerator. The second compartment contains a retail cut of raw meat. Various techniques are employed to rapidly reduce the oxygen level in the second compartment below pigment sensitive levels so that the growth of metmyoglobin is inhibited. Some of these techniques increase the flow of oxygen from the second compartment to the first compartment through the partition member to a level inhibiting the formation of metmyoglobin in the raw meat.

  • Patent number: 6047646
Abstract: Assemblable display unit including integrated pallets. The display unit includes a tray configured to accommodate and receive goods and a plurality of integrated foot structures generally extending downwardly away from the periphery of the tray and supporting the tray. The foot structures are horizontally spaced from each other, defining at least one pallet aperture or channel sized to receive a loading finger. The size of the aperture varies depending upon the equipment to be used in lifting and transporting the display, whether it be a forklift, pallet jack or handcart. The display can be sized depending on the merchandise to be displayed, and thus the foot structures may define more than one opening to allow better ease of transport. The foot structures include only non-vertically-oriented raw edges to prevent water wicking. The display units is formed from blanks of a foldable sheet material, such as double-faced corrugated fiberboard.

  • Patent number: 6047523
Abstract: A system for the vertical packaging of webbing rolls comprises a bottom tray, a top cap, a plurality of webbing rolls, and stretch wrap film. The bottom tray includes a bottom wall and a plurality of side walls extending upwardly from the bottom wall. Likewise, the top cap includes a top wall and a plurality of side walls extending downward from the top wall. The webbing rolls are positioned between the bottom tray and the top cap with the webbing rolls resting on the bottom wall of the bottom tray and the top cap positioned atop the webbing rolls. Horizontally adjacent ones of the webbing rolls are in contact with each other. The contact between adjacent ones of the webbing rolls helps to maintain the integrity of the system during movement thereof. To reduce the amount of packaging material utilized in the system, neither the bottom tray nor the top cap includes corners joining their respective side walls.
