Additionally, the spout may have a step for assisting in the prevention of interference from the cap during pouring, and for providing a predetermined sound every time that the cap is opened. Still further, the closure may have an orienting peg for properly orienting the closure on a container.

A shield plate (57) is positionable above the nozzles (31) to deflect the hydrogen-oxygen gas mixture emitted from the nozzles (31), and an igniter (32) is disposed adjacent one of the nozzles (31), to ignite the mixture emitted from the nozzle (31).

    Abstract: A container having a resealable closure thereon is produced by a method including the steps of providing a closure having a spout and a flange and a stem projecting therefrom, placing the closure about an access area of the container and welding the closure to the container body thereby bonding at least one portion of a hinge to the spout. The closure stem defines an aperture and the cap has a lid and skirt projecting therefrom. The skirt is configured to prevent interference during pouring of the contents of the container. The hinge assembly connects the cap to the spout and allows for reclosable opening of the cap from the spout while maintaining the attachment of the cap with the spout. A tamper-evident structure is formed integrally with the cap including a removable portion secured to the closure by a breakable joint. The closure further includes an orienting projection for orienting the closure on the container at a predetermined location and position.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for sterilizing packaging with vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet radiation on a packaging machine. A partially formed packaging material is sprayed with gaseous hydrogen peroxide thereby allowing the gas to condense on the packaging material. The packaging material is then conveyed to a UV radiation source for irradiation of the packaging material. The packaging material is then dried with heated air to flush/remove any residual hydrogen peroxide. The present invention sterilizes the packaging material allowing for filling of the packaging material with a desired product such as milk, juice or water. The packaging material may be any number of possibilities such as gable top cartons, parallelepiped containers, flexible pouches, and the like. The invention allows for the efficacious use of hydrogen peroxide having a concentration of up to 53% while providing a packaging material having less than 0.5 ppm hydrogen peroxide.

    Abstract: A method is described for sterilizing a fiber based container that contains a food product without damaging the container. The method involves placing the filled container in an autoclave, and supplying steam into the closed autoclave to raised the temperature to a sterilization temperature and at a pressure above atmospheric. The temperature required for sterilizing the food product is greater than the critical temperature for the container. The cooling phase involves introducing cooling air into the autoclave to reduce the temperature below the critical temperature without introducing moisture, and then supplying cool water to lower the temperature of the container rapidly. The use of this method provides effective sterilization in a reduced cycle time.
