The nail composition is optionally free of any toluene-containing components, depending upon the desired application.

The upper phase is oily. The intermediate phase is the solvent phase and contains solvents immiscible with water. In addition to a tri-phase composition also a bi-phase composition is described. The solvents are a mixture of methyl acetate and tert-butyl acetate.

The upper phase is oily. The intermediate phase is the solvent phase and contains a solvent immiscible with water and a small amount of a solvent miscible with water. The composition contains 8-40% of water and at least one polymeric glycol. By agitation, an emulsion is formed which is applied on the fingernails.
