Abstract: A terrain estimation system and procedure in which prior knowledge of terrain configuration is taken as a starting point in the estimation procedure. The gravity field of the earth is sensed by a gradiometer which measures the gravity gradient as the gradiometer is transported by a moving platform past the earth's surface to obtain data of the topology of the earth's surface and of the geology of the terrain including subterranean oil and iron deposits. Optimal filter means, operative in response to a statistical model of terrain and residual geology predict values of gravity gradient to be sensed by said gradiometer at successive locations along a path of travel. Comparison is made between measured and predicted values of gravity gradient to update terrain altitude data by nulling a difference between measured values and predicted values of gravity gradient.
Abstract: An automated device for presenting fastener assemblies to the nosepiece of a fastener-setting tool as quickly as possible with the least amount of error. A pair of fingers connected to a tubular shaft and activated by a pneumatic piston assembly grip the fastener stem close to but spaced from the stem tip; and a second pneumatic piston assembly to displace the device towards the tool to physically insert the fastener stem into the nosepiece of the tool.
Abstract: A molding method for molding a shaped plastic trim panel from a wet moldable composite includes a blade for trimming the molded plastic trim panel while it is still in the molding apparatus. The lower mold member has an annular severing slot and annular clamping shoulders inwardly and outwardly of the severing slot. The upper mold member has an annular slot that is aligned with the severing slot of the lower mold member and annular clamping shoulders on either side of the slot. These shoulders cooperate with the clamping shoulders of the lower mold member to clamp the margin of the molded plastic trim panel that is shaped in the molding members. An annular cutting blade having a serrated cutting edge disposed in the slot of the upper mold member moves down vertically into the severing groove to cut through the clamped margin and trim the molded plastic trim panel.
Abstract: An automotive interior trim component is constructed by placing a cast polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vacuum formed or sprayed thermoplastic/thermoset cover stock, or a cloth/fabric outer shell in a closeable mold, spraying a coating of urethane foam forming materials onto a back surface of the shell, closing the mold with a lid so that an insert is held in spaced relation to the shell and clamping the lid shut while the foam forming material react to provide a shaped foam cushion that is between and bonded to the shell and the insert.
Abstract: An adjustable automotive vehicle seat is equipped with a height adjust mechanism that includes a U-shaped frame having laterally spaced side members and a round front cross member that is mounted on the front ends of the side members for rotation about its centerline. A plurality of bow shaped leaf springs are spaced across the width of the seat with their front ends secured to the round front cross member. The rear ends of the leaf springs are secured to a slidable rear cross member. An electrically powered, reversible ball screw actuator translates the rear cross member in the longitudinal direction so that the height of the seat is adjusted by adjusting the curvature of the bow shaped leaf springs.
Abstract: An anti-roll system for wheeled vehicles has one selective, unidirectionally lockable device per each independent suspension assembly having telescoping members connected between the sprung and unsprung masses that are free to extend or contract during vehicle operation which results in minimal lateral acceleration of the vehicle's sprung mass as when traveling down a straight roadway. The telescoping members include a piston that partially defines first and second chambers interconnected through valves to one another and to a common reservoir. The valves are activated, by a control system signal, when the sprung mass is subjected to a lateral acceleration which exceeds a preset threshold as when rounding a curve, blocking flow from one or the other of the first or second chambers so as to lock the outboard device, with respect to the curve, only against contraction and to lock the inboard device only against extension.
Abstract: An aluminum object is manufactured by a process including chromate conversion coating of the aluminum object; sequentially applying a primer coat to the outer surface and thereafter applying a dielectric substrate basecoat; vacuum metallizing a corrosion prone metal, namely indium, on the dielectric substrate basecoat to form "islands" of the indium that are top coated with a clear resinous layer to encapsulate and insulate the islands, one from another. The indium islands are less than one thousand angstroms thick and have an average diameter of less than three thousand angstroms. The island structure is etched following the growth of the metal as it is deposited between the nucleation stage and the stage of channelization of formation of an electrically conductive film. The etchant is selected to clear channels between island structures to improve adhesion of a dielectric resinous top coat to the dielectric substrate by order of magnitude to adhesion to the islands.
Abstract: A cover assembly for concealing a supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system in a vehicle passenger compartment is formed as an integral part of an automotive instrument panel. The cover assembly has a perforated substrate of ductile metal. The perforations are diamond shaped and form a lattice of stretchable cross members. Selected cross members are weakened to define a door edge. The inflating airbag pushes against the lattice to stretch and deform the cross members so as to create an opening at the door edge for deployment of the airbag into the passenger compartment. The cover assembly includes a decorative vinyl shell and a foam layer between the shell and substrate. The vinyl shell includes weakened sections aligned with the door edge of the substrate.
Abstract: A venting device for a rotocast shell mold body having a neck and a flanged neck plate thereon. The venting device is a tube formed of black iron pipe of a predetermined diameter and length and mounted in an opening formed in one of the neck or a cover mounted on the neck plate, and extended for approximately half its length into the interior of the mold. When used with the neck of the mold, the tube is welded in place, and when used with a mold cover, the tube is threadedly mounted therein.
Abstract: A simplified adjusting mechanism for adjusting the aiming of a headlamp assembly in automobiles and the like includes a gear encircling a bushing and an adjustor screw that is journaled through the bushing. The adjustor mechanism is snapped into a stationary component of the headlamp assembly and the aiming of the headlamp is manually adjusted by using a drive tool. The adjustor mechanism has a series of indication lines that allow the user to adjust the aiming of the headlamp assembly back to its desired position if the headlamp assembly becomes misaligned.
Abstract: A dual door arrangement is insert molded in a decorative automotive instrument panel to create an opening for air bag deployment. The arrangement comprises two self hinging sheet metal doors that are attached to a thermoplastic frame by integral clips. One door has an outwardly projecting lip embedded in the instrument panel that initiate a central slit in the instrument panel for propagating the air bag opening. The other door has a depressed shelf that underlies the lip and adjacent margin of the first door to provide several advantages including helping the lip to initiate the central slit.
Abstract: A clamp for retaining electrical wires, fluid conduits or the like has restraining means adjacent to the inner ends of the clamp's legs. When the clamp is closed, the hook of a hook-shaped member adjacent to the upper leg passes through a slot adjacent to the lower leg and engages the outer surface of the clamp, thereby retaining the clamp in the closed position.
Abstract: A compression release system is provided in an engine having a main exhaust port with an attached muffler. A muffler supporting boss extends from the cylinder of the engine separate from the muffler mounting at the main exhaust port. A compression release port extends through the boss. The muffler has two separate inlet apertures; one for the main exhaust port and one for the compression release port.
Abstract: A tamper-proof drive system including a drive tool and a complementary nut or fastener drive head each having a body defining a central axis and a drive portion formed in an end surface of the body about the central axis. The drive portion defines a plurality of symmetrical lobes in a circular array. The lobes are defines by three series of arcuate surface, two of which may be generated from circular or elliptical configurations while the intermediate surface is partially circular.
Abstract: A blind fastener designed to secure workpieces having aligned holes therein is provided. The fastener comprises an elongated stem having a head at one end and a serrated tail at the other, and a tubular sleeve having a head through which tail of the stem extends and a tail which is engaged by the head of the stem. The stem further includes a shear ring for bulbing the sleeve tail and a lock ring groove for receiving a lock ring for locking the stem to the sleeve. The stem also has a shoulder which engages shoulder portion in the sleeve to cause the sleeve to expand radially outward so as to fill any clearance or gap between the sleeve and the workpieces. A reservoir located in the stem accepts excess shoulder material displaced during the hole filling process. In one embodiment, a preformed lock ring is positioned in the lock ring groove to lock the stem to the sleeve. In another embodiment, a lock ring is formed from material in the sleeve head.

Abstract: A cover normally concealing a safety air bag is adapted to rupture to form an opening for air bag deployment into the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle. The cover is formed of plastic material that tends to become embrittled and fragment when torn or pierced below a certain ambient temperature. A heater is provided behind the cover that is adapted to heat the rupture area in the event of air bag deployment. A heater control operates the heater to maintain this critical area above the fragmentation temperature when the vehicle is being operated at low ambient temperatures that would cause plastic embrittlement.
