  • Patent number: 4491443
Abstract: An adapter for a torquing tool includes an elongated body having a bore at at least one end to accommodate a working member such as a drill bit or fastener driver and a coupling means for detachably attaching the body to the tool so that at least a portion of the adapter is not housed within the tool. The improvement comprises a quick release means internal of the portion of the body member that is not housed within the tool to detachably retain the working member within the bore and to the elongated body and means associated with said bore and said working member for transmitting torque from the tool to the working member. The preferred quick release means is a spring loaded shuttle positioned in an opening radially through the body member and in communication with the bore. The preferred torque transmitting means is a pair of corresponding, opposed surfaces disposed on the bore and working member, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4488838
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for feeding a crushed or pulverized solid supply material such as coal or the like, from a supply source under ambient pressure into a reactor or the like which is under significantly higher pressure; such as in connection with a hydrogenation/oxidation process producing so-called "fuel" or "synthesis" gases. A liquefied gas such as carbon dioxide or the like, is fed under pressure into a moving supply of such materials (as may be contained in a closed casing screw conveyor/extruder or the like) in order to form a slurry which is suitable to be pumped into the receiver against its superior pressure. Process temperatures are so controlled that as the input liquefied gas component of the slurry migrates toward the lower pressure feed inlet end of the conveyor in response to the superior pressure at the discharge end of the conveyor, it solidifies into solid particles which intermingle with and substantially fill the interstices between the supply material particles.

  • Patent number: 4484961
Abstract: There is disclosed a process and apparatus whereby typically furnished commercially nitrogen tetroxide propellants for rocket engines may be upgraded to decrease flow decay problems and to increase the shelf life of the product; thereby providing for longer duration trouble-free rocket engine performance. The raw MON material is initially converted if necessary to the "Red" type; dissolved iron salts and other dirt particulates are removed by cooling and filtering, and thenceforth throughout the process the material is filtered at each transfer operation. Specific apparatus arrangements are provided for facilitating the process and the end product is of increased purity; whereby upon being furnished to an engine for test or vehicle launching purposes the program may proceed as scheduled and the vehicle may be maintained in space for a longer period of time.

  • Patent number: 4472005
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved set-screw shaft mounting for a machine element such as the inner race ring of an antifriction bearing. Tolerances are closely controlled for both the set-screw threads and the tapped-hole threads, for the case of set-screw threads which are yieldable in the context of an interference (i.e., friction-fit) to the tapped hole, the interference being such as to occasion a friction torque which is but a small fraction of the conventional maximum comfortable torque of wrench application by a machinist, using a conventional wrench, such as an Allen wrench. The low friction torque enables the machinist to know precisely when the set screw intercepts the shaft into which it is driven, and he can then know that his manually applied maximum torque will be serving essentially only the intended purpose of clamping to the shaft. Extended running life is realized for bearings thus mounted, as compared to conventional set-screw clamping.

  • Patent number: 4457328
Abstract: In-line valve means for isolating a source of fluid under pressure from a desired using apparatus until use of the fluid is desired. The in-line valve means includes a positively sealed plug and an on-off isolation control valve which is positioned by appropriate electromagnetic means such as a torque motor or a solenoid. The plug has a frangible area which is sheared by forces generated by the electromagnetic force motor. After the plug is sheared it is positioned by appropriate means within the flow path to preclude substantial interference with the flow of fluid from the source through the control valve to the outlet. Subsequent repetitive on-off control of the fluid may be accomplished with a second seal and seat in series with the positive seal plug and actuated by the same electromagnetic means.
