    Abstract: A force measuring system is provided in which a force sensitive element (51) includes a movable capacitor plate (21) located between two fixed capacitor plates (19, 20). A pair of jewel bearings (52) are mounted to a support casting (55) and provides support for a force sensitive element (51). The support casting (55) also serves as a support for a hybrid integrated circuit (68) which, in turn, forms a support substrate for one of the fixed plates (19). A second fixed plate (20) may be mounted on the casting (55) via a substrate (69). The hybrid integrated circuit (68) is therefore in close proximity to a capacitor element (19-21). The hybrid circuit (68) provides output power to a torquer coil (37) which centers the force sensitive element (51), with current provided to the torquer coil (37) being indicative of force exerted on the force sensitive element (51).

    Abstract: A disc brake includes a positioning device (40) which is pressure responsive to control the amount of retraction for a piston (22) within the disc brake. The positioning device includes a plug (44) movably and sealingly carried within the piston (22) and a pair of legs (48, 50). The plug (44) cooperates with the pair of legs (48, 50) to move the latter to a position in spaced relation to a caliper housing (12) when the pressure level within a pressure chamber (28) is above a predetermined value. A spring (52) cooperates with the plug (44) and the pair of legs (48, 50) to engage the latter with the caliper housing (12) when the fluid pressure within the pressure chamber (28) is below the predetermined value.

    Abstract: A gyrocompass has a gimbal (18;218) rotatable about an upright axis (22;222) and a gyro (10;210) rotatably mounted in this gimbal (18;218) about an inner axis (16;216) transverse to the upright axis (22;222). The gyrocompass also includes a level sensor (30,32;230,232) supported by the gimbal (18;218) for providing a level signal signifying the tilt of the upright axis (22;222) from vertical. Also included is a controller (50) connected to the level sensor (30,32;230,232). The controller includes equipment (50) responsive to the level signal for rotating the gimbal (18;218) into an initial position (SP(1)) at which the level signal has a predetermined value. A method employing the foregoing apparatus includes the steps of rotating the gimbal (18;218) until the level sensor (30,32;230,232) indicates the inner axis (16;216) is horizontal.

    Abstract: A spool valve and seal having zero leakage includes a spool valve member having a hollow interior translatable within a bore in a valve body with inlet pressure connected through ports to the hollow interior of the spool valve member. A series of radial orifices axially displaced from the inlet ports communicate the interior with the exterior surface of said spool valve member, the outlets of said orifices terminating in chamfered edges. A seal is positioned adjacent the spool valve member in an annular groove formed in the surface of the bore within which the spool member is translated, the seal being positioned to prevent leakage between the inlet pressure passages and an outlet chamber in said valve body.

    Abstract: A differential pressure measuring system is disclosed. The system includes two quartz capacitive pressure transducers (14, 16). Each capsule contains a pressure sensitive capacitor (Csa, Csb) and a relatively pressure invariable reference capacitor (Cra, Crb). The pressure sensitive capacitors (Csa, Csb) are excited by out-of-phase signals, (Vr, -Vr) which further excite the reference capacitors (Cra, Crb), out of phase, respectively. The outputs of all capacitors are combined in a summing junction (22) whose output controls the count of a digital integrator (34). A closed loop is formed by converting the output of the integrator (34) to a negative feedback signal (lf) which is applied to the summing junction (22) through a feedback capacitor (Cf). The integrator (34) incrementally changes the feedback signal (lf) in a direction to balance the loop. At this point the output of the integrator (34) is representative of the measured differential pressure.

    Abstract: The output frequency of a phase locked loop frequency synthesizer is measured by a counter which counts whole output cycles and a timer providing a signal proportional to a fractional output cycle during a sampling period. The counter output is stored into a latch at each sampling period. Calculated frequency is generated by an accumulator which is incremented a selectable integer N at the completion of each sampling period. The accumulator output is divided into a first part relating to whole cycles and a second part relating to fractional cycles. An adder takes the difference of the latch stored number and the accumulator output first part. The resulting difference, with the accumulator output second part restored thereto, comprises a coarse error signal in digital form. The digital coarse error signal is converted to analog and applied as one input to a summer. A second input to the summer is provided by the timer signal after being scaled proportionately to N in a multiplying D/A converter.

    Abstract: A spherical vehicle for operation in a fluid medium utilizes an actuator disk or propeller of approximately half the diameter of the sphere for propulsion. In addition to providing the energy for driving the sphere, the actuator disk acts to draw the flow of fluid smoothly over the after part of the sphere, thus avoiding or minimizing the tendency of the flow to separate from the surface of the sphere and create turbulence. For aircraft launch, a heavy shroud protects the actuator disk propeller and assures that the vehicle will sink rapidly after impact. The shroud is jettisoned at a desired depth. Steering in pitch and yaw planes is effected through the use of a plurality of powered thrusters located at or just behind the circle of maximum diameter (with respect to the direction of motion) and selectively actuated by a guidance or control system. Alternatively a single reversible thruster may be used for steering in yaw combined with a movable internal weight for pitch control.

    Abstract: A resonant flyback boost circuit (21) is used to enchance flyback performance by decreasing the time required for completing flyback on systems using a cathode ray tube and a magnetic deflection coil (11). The boost circuit (21) is parallelly connected across the yoke (11) in order to sense a voltage peak which occurs at the initiation of flyback. The voltage peak is used to initiate a control signal for allowing current to pass from a high voltage source (23) to a supplemental boost capacitor (33). When the potential across the supplemental boost capacitor (33) exceeds the potential across the yoke (11), current flows from the supplemental boost capacitor (33), to an isolating diode (40) to the yoke (11), thereby increasing the current flow through the yoke (11) during the allocated flyback period.The boost circuit (21) reduces flyback time while maintaining a high input impendance when boost is not being applied.

    Abstract: A distributor pump type fuel injection system for a diesel engine wherein the pump is driven by the engine and the control of the timing and metering of fuel being delivered to each cylinder of the engine is controlled by a single electromagnetic solenoid device. The control system includes a distribution head for distributing pulses of fuel to each cylinder, the control of the fuel to the cylinder, both metering and timing, being controlled by the above-mentioned single electromagnetic control device. The fuel system includes a metering chamber and a timing chamber, the two chambers being separated by a free piston. In the control system to be described, fuel is premetered into the metering chamber, the quantity of fuel therein being controlled by the duration of energization of the control valve during the metering portion of the cycle. The time of injection of the premetered fuel is similarly under the control of the control valve and is initiated upon energization of the control valve.
