  • Patent number: 5700134
Abstract: A diffusion pump is provided with an outer body and a chimney positioned within the outer body. A top cap is positioned about the top of the chimney to form an annular passageway (or an annular array of passageways) therebetween. A guard ring is positioned generally above the top cap. Coolers cool the outer body and the guard ring and working fluid present in the base of the outer body is heated to cause evaporated oil to pass up the chimney. A baffle, substantially thermally isolated from the guard ring, is contained within the outer body.

  • Patent number: 5692398
Abstract: A first stream of argon-enriched oxygen is separated in a first rectification column to form oxygen vapour further enriched in argon and a second stream of argon-enriched oxygen is introduced into a second rectification column operating at a lower pressure than the first rectification column. A vapour flow upwardly through the second rectification column is created by reboiling in a reboiler-condenser liquid separated therein. The further-enriched oxygen vapour is condensed in the reboiler-condenser by indirect heat exchange with said separated liquid. One stream of the condensed further-enriched oxygen vapour is employed as reflux in the first rectification column. A third argon-enriched oxygen stream is introduced in liquid state into an intermediate mass exchange region of the second rectification column. An argon product is separated in the second rectification column.

  • Patent number: 5692397
Abstract: Air is separated in a higher pressure rectification column into a bottom fraction of oxygen-enriched liquid air and a top fraction of nitrogen. The column has a first inlet for a first vaporous air stream at a first pressure communicating with an expansion turbine. A first condenser-reboiler for condensing a second vaporous air stream at a second pressure greater than the first pressure has an inlet communicating with a compressor. The condensate flows through an expansion valve into the higher pressure rectification column. A stream of oxygen-enriched liquid is withdrawn from the bottom of the column and is introduced into a lower pressure rectification column in which an impure oxygen fraction is separated. A second condenser-reboiler places the top of the higher pressure rectification column in heat exchange relationship with an intermediate region of the column. Reboil for the bottom of the column is provided by the first condenser-reboiler. An impure oxygen product is withdrawn from the column.

  • Patent number: 5692396
Abstract: Compressed, purified, vaporous air and liquid air streams are introduced into a higher pressure rectification column. A stream of oxygen-enriched liquid flows from an outlet of the higher pressure rectification column via a reboiler and an expansion valve into a vessel. The oxygen-enriched liquid is partially vaporised in a boiler located in the vessel. The residual liquid flows from the vessel and a condenser to a lower pressure rectification column in which oxygen and nitrogen products are separated. A stream of vapour flows from the boiler through an outlet from the vessel to a pipeline which leads the air back for compression with incoming air. A greater yield of oxygen, and, if separated, argon is made possible by this recycle.

  • Patent number: 5692890
Abstract: A combustion apparatus includes a moderator gas supply which is added to the fuel to be combusted by concurrent injection to form an intimate admixture as it enters the combustion chamber. Such intimate mixture facilitates a high degree of temperature control within the combustion zone of the flame itself, thereby protecting combustion components and at least reducing or eliminating the formation of thermal NO.sub.x.

  • Patent number: 5689975
Abstract: A stream of precooled and purified air is introduced into a double rectification column comprising a higher pressure rectification column and a lower pressure rectification column and is separated therein into an oxygen-rich fraction and a nitrogen-rich fraction. A stream of argon-enriched oxygen vapor flows from an outlet of the lower pressure rectification column into a side column in which argon is separated therefrom. An oxygen-enriched liquid air stream is taken from an outlet at the bottom of the higher pressure rectification column. A vaporous oxygen-enriched air stream is introduced into the lower pressure rectification column through an inlet above the outlet. At least part of the oxygen-enriched liquid is separated in a further or intermediate pressure rectification column provided with a reboiler, thereby forming a vapor depleted of oxygen and a liquid air stream further enriched in oxygen.

  • Patent number: 5672160
Abstract: A medical device includes a hollow needle for piercing the skin of a patient. Prior to use, the needle is located in a needle protected position within a housing. The needle can be moved outwardly from the needle protected position to an extended position where it is ready for use with the patient. After use, the needle is retracted back into the housing to the needle protected position. A door is positioned at the distal end of the housing and has an aperture. The door is slidable between a first position where the needle is in alignment with the aperture in the door so that the needle can pass through the aperture to be moved to its extended position and a second position where the needle does not line up with the aperture and thus the needle cannot be moved from the needle protected position to the needle extended position.

  • Patent number: 5666822
Abstract: Air is raised in pressure by a compressor and pre-purified by removal of impurities, particularly H.sub.2 O vapor and CO.sub.2, in an adsorption unit. The resulting air is cooled in a heat exchanger, and is subjected to a first rectification in a rectification column in which the air is separated into a nitrogen-rich fraction and an oxygen-rich fraction. A further oxygen fraction enriched in argon is subjected to a second rectification in which argon is separated from oxygen in a second rectification column. First and second argon products of different purity are withdrawn from the second rectification column through outlets thereof.

  • Patent number: 5664561
Abstract: An anesthetic vaporizer having a means of mixing the anesthetic agent with a relatively low flow of carrier gas or a larger amount of carrier gas. A valve is operable by the user to select between the high flow anesthesia where the carrier gas and anesthetic agent are mixed in a mixing chamber and the low flow anesthesia where the carrier gas and anesthetic agent are diverted directly into the patient circuit. Accordingly, the anesthetic vaporizer is usable for high flow anesthesia, however, when used for low flow, the diverted flow allows more rapid response by eliminating the large volume of the mixing chamber.

  • Patent number: 5660059
Abstract: An air separation plant and process in which a first stream of compressed feed air is introduced in vapour state into a higher pressure rectification column and separated therein into nitrogen vapour and oxygen-enriched liquid air and a flow of the nitrogen vapour is condensed in condenser-reboiler. A flow of the oxygen-enriched liquid air is separated in a reboiled lower pressure rectification column into nitrogen-rich and oxygen-rich fractions. A first flow of the condensed nitrogen is employed as reflux in the higher pressure rectification column and a second flow of the condensed nitrogen is employed as reflux in the lower pressure rectification column. A flow of compressed feed air is expanded in expansion turbine with the performance of external work so as to create refrigeration for the process. Products of the separation include one or both of a gaseous nitrogen product taken from the higher pressure rectification column and a liquid nitrogen product.

  • Patent number: 5653629
Abstract: Poultry packed in a crate suitable for the transport of live poultry are passed into a chamber having an oxygen depleted atmosphere and held in the atmosphere for a sufficient period of time for the poultry first to lose consciousness and then to die as a result of the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere. The atmosphere typically comprises nitrogen or argon containing less than 1% by volume of oxygen. It is found that the birds so slaughtered exhibit less bone damage than poultry slaughtered by a conventional method including the step of electrically stunning the birds prior to slaughter.
