Patents Assigned to The Dow Company
  • Patent number: 5062713
Abstract: A method for the on-line determination of the residence time distribution of a polymer extruder by injecting a quantity of dye, such as Mobay Red 5B, into the feed throat of the extruder and then photometrically monitoring the polymer flowing from the extruder for the dye. The advance of the present invention is to direct a single beam of polychromatic light through the polymer flowing from the extruder, e.g., by using a quartz-halogen light source and an optical fiber, and then to split this single beam of light that has passed through the polymer into two beams, e.g., by the use of a bifurcated optical fiber, each of which resulting beams are then passed through a separate filter to a separate photodetector. The wavelength of maximum transmission of one of the filters is selected to be near the wavelength of maximum light absorption of the dye so that the signal from the photodetector associated with this filter is a function of the concentration of the dye in the polymer flowing from the extruder.

  • Patent number: 5006215
Abstract: An apparatus for uniformly pressing a plurality of flat plate-type structures together comprising a first and second vertical support means, a pair of side rails spaced apart and supported on the support means, the side rails being perpendicular to the support means and adapted to support flat plate-like structures, a plurality of flat plate-like structures with hanger members to slidably and pivotably mount the structures on the side rails, a vertical mobile platen provided with top and bottom hanger members connected to a press means adapted for pressing the mobile platen against and toward the flat plate-type structures to compress them together and retracting the mobile platen from the plate-like structures, the press means comprising at least one coiled spring, a first contactor plate attached to the mobile platen and a second contactor plate attached to a positioning device secured to one of the support means and a first and second guide chamber for directing the positioning device and coiled spring per

  • Patent number: 4610571
Abstract: A foundation system which includes the use of a coupled piling of solid bars for supporting a structure in which the solid bars are coupled together in a contacting relationship. The coupled piling bars comprise a first and a second solid bar, one end of the first bar and the other end of the second bar adapted to be placed in an aligned, contacting, supporting relationship, each bar having a pin-retaining cavity spaced apart a short distance from the end of each bar, and each end having a pin-retaining ring-receiving cavity at each opposing end of the bar, to receive a pin-retaining ring. The first and second bars are coupled together through an outer housing which fits over the outer surface of the opposing ends of the first and second bars, and containing first and second pins and springs, to bias the pins inwardly toward the center of the coupling, and retaining-pin rings in the housing, to retain the first and second pins in an open tensioned position.

  • Patent number: 4530979
Abstract: A continuous adiabatic process for preparing water-miscible and water-soluble polymers wherein an aqueous solution containing monomer and an initiator system is passed through a reactor and reacted to yield a rapid increase in viscosity as polymerization occurs. The polymer product exhibits consistent cross-sectional properties in the reactor over time and moves slowly and easily through the reactor as a plug.
