Abstract: There is disclosed a monovinylidene aromatic polymer resin having a specific rubber particle size distribution that provides surprisingly improved combinations of product properties, such as gloss, impact resistance and tensile strength. Such resin has a first group of smaller particles having a volume average particle diameter of from about 0.2 to about 0.6 micrometers and a second group of larger particles having a volume average particle diameter of from about 2.5 to about 5 micrometers. In these resins it is further necessary in this specific rubber particle size distribution, based on 100 parts by weight rubber or rubber equivalent, that (a) particles constituting from about 20 to about 60 parts by weight of the rubber have diameters of from about 0.1 to about 0.
Abstract: A process for preparing carboxylic acid esters of of the formulaX--(COOCH.sub.2 A).sub.nwherein A is the residue of a substituted or unsubstituted 3- or 4-benzocyclobutene compound, X is an n-valent organic bridging group, and n is 2,3, or 4, comprises reacting a substituted or unsubstituted 3- or 4-hydroxymethylbenzocyclobutene compound with a compound of the formula X--(COY).sub.n, wherein X is an n-valent organic bridging group and Y is Cl or Br. Abstract: This invention is a process for the preparation of poly(aryl ethers) from cyclic poly(aryl ether) oligomers. These low melt viscosity cyclic oligomers undergo ring opening and chain extension upon heating in the presence of a catalyst, forming high molecular weight linear polymers with no coproduct formation. Finished thermoplastic parts and composites may be prepared using this technology with processing techniques normally restricted to thermosetting monomers.

Abstract: This invention, in one respect, is a process for producing allylic chlorides which comprises contacting a feedstream containing an olefin in the gas phase with a chlorination composition under conditions effective to produce an allylic chlorine and wherein the mole ratio of oxygen to olefin is from 0 to about 1:20 in the feedstream. The chlorination composition contains supported palladium chloride, platinum chloride, or palladium chloride and a chloride of a Group 1 alkali metal selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, and potassium; a Group 2 alkaline earth metal; a Group 9 metal; nickel; and a Group 12 metal. The chlorination composition can be regenerated by contacting the chlorination composition with chlorine in a cyclic reaction scheme.
Abstract: Phenoxy resins are disclosed which are prepared from polyglycidyl amines containing one or more mesogenic moieties. The phenoxy resins are useful in the preparation of coatings.
Abstract: A multicomponent, multilayered, highly reflective polymeric body which is thermoformable and capable of being fabricated into films, sheets and a variety of parts while maintaining a uniform reflective appearance is provided. The reflective polymeric body includes at least first, second, and third diverse polymeric materials having a sufficient number of alternating layers of the polymeric materials such that a portion of the light incident on the body is reflected. A sufficient number of the individual layers of the body have optical thicknesses of not more than 0.09 micrometers or not less than 0.45 micrometers, such that there is an absence of visibly perceived color in the body. The polymeric materials having the highest and lowest refractive indices differ from each other in refractive index by at least about 0.03. The reflective body may be fabricated into mirrors, noncorroding metallic appearing articles and parts, reflectors, reflective lenses, and the like.
Abstract: Blends of polycarbonate and polyester are admixed in compositions with poly(phenylene ether), and/or with a poly(phenylene ether) concentrate containing poly(phenylene ether), polystyrene, a vinyl aromatic copolymer, polyamide, polycarbonate, polyester, poly(alkyl acrylate), and/or poly(alkyl methacrylate). The blended compositions may also optionally contain additional vinyl aromatic copolymer as a separate component, impact modifiers, thermoplastic molding materials including polystyrene, polyolefin, polyamide, poly(vinyl chloride), polyurethane, poly(methyl methacrylate) and polyacetal, and conventional additives such as dyes and pigments.

Abstract: The invention is a method of installing an outer-cased piling through a zone of subsoil contamination which includes boring a hole to a predetermined depth below the contamination, placing a smaller diameter casing in the full length of the hole, pumping a cementitious material between the outer casing wall and the soil, installing the piling through the casing and down to a point of refusal below the contaminated zone, filling the piling form with cement and then filling the void between the piling and casing with a cementitious material.The outer-cased piling design allows the piling installation through zones of contamination without adversely impacting the environment or spreading the contamination to other subsurface layers.
Abstract: A method for preparing an advanced epoxy cationic resin from an epoxy-based resin containing oxirane groups by converting at least some of the oxirane groups to cationic groups is improved by using as the epoxy-based resin a blend of (I) an epoxy-based resin obtained by reacting in the presence of a suitable catalyst (1) a diglycidylether of an aliphatic diol which diol is essentially free of ether oxygen atoms, such as a condensation product of 1,4-butanediol and epichlorohydrin, optionally (2) a diglycidylether of a dihydric phenol, for example a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, (3) a dihydric phenol such as bisphenol A, and optionally (4) a capping agent such as p-nonylphenol and (II) a different cationic epoxy-based resin. Such resin blends can be utilized in cathodic electrodeposition coating systems.

Abstract: A foam-fluid composition for use in foam fracture applications and foam slurry transport comprises a thickening amount of a viscoelastic surfactant composition, a functionally effective amount of a surfactant composition capable of forming a foam, and an aqueous liquid. Foam-fluid formulations are easily prepared, reusable, shear stable, easily pumped and form stable foams over a wide temperature range and exhibit high viscosities even at relatively high temperatures.

Abstract: A powdered admixture of a boron, carbon, nitrogen or silicon derivative of a first metal is combined with a source of a second metal and, optionally, a source of a third metal or an iron-group metal, subjected to densification conditions (heat and pressure), partially reacted and converted to a hard, wear resistant material. The wear resistant material contains an amount of the first metal derivative as well as a material of varying stoichiometry which is the partial reaction product of components of the powdered admixture. The material may also contain residual, unreacted portions of components other than the first metal derivative. Articles formed from this material can be useful as, for example, nozzles in abrasive or nonabrasive waterjet cutting machines and various parts of wire drawing apparatus.
