Abstract: A method of producing an engraved image on a computer screen includes loading an image to be engraved and converting the image into a high contrast image using at least two colors. The first lighter color is used for the lighter portions of the high contrast image and a darker color is used for the darker portions of the high contrast image. Mixing of the colors is based on the luminance level of the image. A plurality of lines are drawn over the high contrast image with variations in the plurality of lines drawn being a function of the luminance of the underlying image.

Abstract: A method of reception includes detecting that an object has entered a first region of a space at a first time. A time period is measured around the first time. A determination is made whether any object has entered a second region of the space within the time period. Thereafter, a determination is made that the object needs attention when no object is detected entering the second region within the time period.

Abstract: An improved braking system is disclosed in which a pair of conical braking members engage a pair of skate wheels through vertical movement of a pushrod that is actuated by movement of the skater's foot within a cuff. The braking members are separated by a spring disposed on an axel to maintain the braking members in optimal braking position. The braking members are serrated to promote frictional contact with the wheels, and a disk is positioned on the axel to act as a clutch to control the braking force.

Abstract: A mounting support for mounting an object, such as a light, flashlight or the like, to a mounting surface is disclosed. The support comprises a body to which may be coupled the object, at least two legs projecting from the body, the legs comprising opposed divergently arcuate inner surfaces each providing at least one abutment point for abutting the legs upon the mounting surface, and a fastener for maintaining the abutment. The object or light may be integrally, fixedly, pivotally or otherwise coupled to the body.
Abstract: An external defibrillator having a battery; a capacitor electrically communicable with the battery; at least two electrodes electrically communicable with the capacitor and with the skin of a patient; a controller configured to charge the capacitor from the battery and to discharge the capacitor through the electrodes; and a support supporting the battery, capacitor, electrodes and controller in a deployment configuration, the defibrillator having a maximum weight per unit area in the deployment configuration of 0.1 lb/in2 and/or a maximum thickness of 1 inch. The support may be a waterproof housing.
Abstract: Methods of promoting reproductive health in an animal by administering an effective amount of a composition containing at least one transfer factor are provided.
Abstract: A method includes substantially filling with joint sealant first and second kerfs in upper and lower ends, respectively, of a curtain wall member. A locating-and-retaining member of a latching member is embedded in the first kerf's sealant. A receiving-and-retaining member of a first bracket is embedded in the second kerf's sealant, the wall member initially extending upwardly and angularly outwardly relative to the first bracket. The wall member is pivoted inwardly such that an end of a nominally horizontally-disposed portion of the latching member slides along a lower surface of a supporting member of a second bracket causing the latching member to rotate downwardly, compressing foam tape beneath the horizontally-disposed portion. The end of the latching member moves past a locking member until a latch comes into latching engagement with the locking member, the foam tape decompressing and maintaining the latching member in engagement with the lower surface.

Abstract: A lock includes a stationary key mass having a first key mass bore and a keyway, and a movable spring mass including a first spring mass bore. A first spring mass pin is mounted in the first spring mass bore, and a first key mass pin is mounted in the first key mass bore for reciprocation between a locked position immobilizing the spring mass and an unlocked position unconstraining motion in at least one direction. The unlocked position is a function of the presence of a matching key in the keyway. Multiple key mass and spring mass pins can be used, some or all of which can have stepped configurations, and corresponding single-bladed or multi-bladed keys, or multiple keys, can be used. The keys can be straight or curved in any of various planes, or they can be straight but flexible to match curved keyways. Curves can be unidirectional or compound. Relative motion between the key mass and spring mass can be in a plane or along straight line or circular.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting the alertness of an equipment operator by displaying a moving icon, and asking the operator to track the movements of the icon, either by following it with the eyes in a head mounted display, or by following it with a finger on a touch screen. The operator's performance can be measured by tracking the gaze of the operator's eyes, or by tracking the operator's finger movements. The performance of the operator can be compared to that particular person's history of test results, or to a data base of test results of other operators. The characteristics of the icon can be varied, and distractions can be provided on the display or screen. Control of the display or screen, tracking of the operator's eyes or finger, and analysis of the test results, can all be performed by a computer.
Abstract: A supplementary power supply and method for powering a portable electrical device such as a flashlight having a positive terminal and a negative terminal and battery compartment adapted to receive a standard battery therein. The supply comprises a cap adapted for installation on the battery compartment, an electrical circuit comprising a generator and a positive output and a negative output, and an actuator in mechanical communication with the generator and capable of actuation when the power supply is within the compartment and the cap is installed on the compartment, wherein the electrical circuit is sized and shaped to be received within the battery compartment and interconnect the positive output with the positive terminal and the negative output with the negative terminal, and actuation of the actuator operates the generator to provide an electrical current between the positive output and the negative output. There is also disclosed a kit comprising a plurality of replacement caps.
Abstract: Methods are disclosed wherein the structural health of a civil structure, pressure vessel, or the like is measured by electronic distance measurement (EDM) from a plurality of stable locations to a plurality of cardinal points on the structure in a methodical manner. By measuring the coordinates of the cardinal points, the dynamic and long-term static behavior of the structure provide an indication of the health of the structure. Analyses includes: comparison to a Finite Element Model (FEM); comparison to historical data; and modeling based on linearity, hysteresis, symmetry, creep, damping coefficient, and harmonic analysis.

Abstract: A hand-held cosmetic powder applicator brush apparatus for applying cosmetic powders such as facial powders and other powders to a user. The brush apparatus comprises a housing having a chamber for holding a powder to be dispensed and a valve mechanism for selectively opening and closing the chamber to a brush mounted on the housing so that powder in the housing may be dispensed to the bristles of the brush. The valve is operable by rotating an upper housing section such as a sleeve on the housing in a first direction to cause such opening. When the brush is not used, the upper housing section is rotated in the opposite direction to cause the valve mechanism to close. There is also a shield which extends around a portion of the brush to engage and protect the bristles when an outer cap is placed over the brush.
