Abstract: Chromium is deposited on a surface using a coating tape having a source layer including a powdered source of chromium, a solid reactant that reacts with solid chromium at elevated temperature to produce a gaseous chromium-containing compound, an inert powder dispersed with the powdered source of chromium, and a binder. Preferably, a porous media layer including a porous media material and a binder is affixed to the source layer. The coating tape is positioned adjacent to the surface of the substrate, with the porous media layer, where present, in contact with the surface. The coating tape and substrate are placed into a container, and the container is heated to elevated temperature in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The gaseous chromium-containing compound is produced and chromium is deposited from the gaseous chromium-containing compound onto the surface of the substrate.

Abstract: An apparatus for repairing a shroud in which one or more seam welds are cracked. The repair involves the attachment of a splice bracket to the shroud so that the bracket bridges the cracked weld seam and is applicable to both vertical and horizontal weld seams. The bracket is intended to structurally replace the shroud seam weld which is cracked. Multiple splice brackets can be placed along the length of a crack. Each splice bracket is attached to the shroud by a plurality of tapered fastener assemblies.

Abstract: An analog memory unit that can be implemented, at least in part, on an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), utilizes at least the ASIC arithmetic logic unit (ALU) to enhance performance and to generate and store an accurate measure of power line thermal status. The memory unit includes an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter for converting an input analog signal from a parallel R-C circuit to a digital signal and a scaler for scaling the digital signal from the A/D converter to within a range acceptable for further processing. The memory unit also includes an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) which receives input signals from the scaler and from a digital thermal memory. The input signal supplied to the ALU from the digital thermal memory is a four bit (digital) value proportional to the measured actual thermal status of the subject power line. The output of the ALU is connected to the input of latches which latch, or store, the digital signal produced by the ALU.

Abstract: A method for mitigating initiation or propagation of a crack in a surface of a metal component in a boiling water reactor. The method includes the step of injecting a solution or suspension of a pH-adjusting compound into the bulk water of the reactor. The compound has the property of changing the pH of high-temperature water inside the crack from a value outside a predetermined pH range (namely, pH 6.0 to 8.0) to a value within the predetermined pH range without causing any significant change of the bulk water pH. The growth rate of the crack when the crack pH is outside the predetermined pH range is greater than the growth rate of the crack when the crack pH is within the predetermined pH range.

Abstract: A die having a metallic block with a depression, the depression having at least one cross-sectional transition zone, at least one laser shock peened surface encompassing at least a portion of the zone, a region having deep compressive residual stresses imparted by laser shock peening (LSP) extending into the airfoil from the laser shock peened surface. The die has been found to be useful for cold rolling blanks such when the metallic block is a cold rolling die block. The die may be adapted for forming a gas turbine engine component, such as a compressor blade, having an airfoil such that the depression corresponds to the airfoil.
Abstract: Radiofrequency (RF) and magnetic field gradient pulse sequences employ Time-of-Flight (TOF) strategy to selectively create transverse spin magnetization which is then maintained for a selected period of time and then imaged in order to generate a vessel selective magnetic resonance angiogram. The pulse sequence employs a spatially selective excitation pulse which is used to create transverse spin magnetization in a selected region of a subject. This region typically is made to include the root of the vessel to be imaged. After excitation, transverse magnetization is maintained with a series of refocusing RF pulses while the blood moves along the vessel. The transverse magnetization is then sampled at one or more selected times after excitation with conventional imaging strategies.

Abstract: A thermoplastic molding composition including at least one polycarbonate resin which is a polycarbonate homopolymer or copolymer; and an amount of at least one tetrahalobisphenol A copolymer effective to reduce the yellowness index of the at least one polycarbonate resin as determined after thermally molding the composition into an article. The article molded from the thermoplastic molding composition has a lower yellowness index than that of an article molded from a corresponding thermoplastic molding composition which does not contain any of the at least one tetrahalobisphenol A copolymer.
Abstract: A method for preparing a Ni base superalloy inner wall surface of a body open end, such as an end of a turbomachinery blade, and an end plate, such as a blade tip cap, for brazing together at a rim of the end plate includes electrochemically removing oxides from the inner wall surface. The end plate is prepared, at least at its rim, by first removing surface and subsurface oxides, for example by mechanical abrading or a combination of such abrading and acid cleaning. Then at least the rim is electroplated with Ni which is heated to diffuse the Ni into the rim substrate. This provides an improved combination of surfaces for brazing for example with a Ni base brazing alloy. After brazing the rim to the inner wall, there is provided an article with an improved relatively low oxide brazed joint, including less than about 20 volume % oxides, and a plate rim of substantially Ni along with elements diffused from the brazing alloy and the rim.

Abstract: Line voltage and line current signals are sensed on a power line having at least one conducting path. The sensed line voltages and line currents are converted into a digital signal. A phase-to-neutral voltage signal and phase current signal are computed from the digital signal to thereby define a phase of the power line. An interval of orthogonality is determined from the sensed voltage and current signals, coinciding with passage of an integral number of cycles of a fundamental frequency reference signal which is computed from the computed phase-to-neutral voltage signal. A vector metering quantity is computed for the determined interval of orthogonality from the computed phase-to-neutral voltage signal and the computed phase current signal. The vector metering quantities to be computed may be identified and computed based upon an associated detent. The vector metering quantity is also computed based on an identified circuit topology.

Abstract: The instant invention is directed in general to optical systems in which a laser beam is injected into the end of an optical fiber and, more specifically, to laser materials processing systems in which a high power laser beam is injected into the fiber input end for transmission to a remote end of the fiber where materials processing is performed with the emitted beam. In a preferred embodiment of the instant invention, an injection chamber is used to isolate the optical fiber injection end from the surrounding air by enclosing the optical fiber injection end, and providing a gas purge to reduce the air concentration and to keep dust from entering or settling on the optical fiber injection end. This preferred embodiment prevents the ionization of the air surrounding the fiber injection end, thereby preventing the damaging effects of ionization which often occur during optical fiber injection processes.
