Patent number: 4503204Abstract: A composition useful as a catalyst in solution polymerization comprises (1) a barium, calcium and/or strontium alcoholate, (2) an organoaluminum compound and (3) an organomagnesium compound. (2) and (3) may be used as a complex with (1). The compositions can be used to polymerize ethylenically unsaturated monomers like butadiene, butadiene and styrene, and isoprene and heterocyclic monomers like oxiranes, thiiranes, siloxanes, thiatanes and lactams. The catalyst composition can produce polybutadienes and butadiene-styrene copolymers having a trans-1,4 content as high as 90%. The non-terminating features of the polymerization of this invention permit the preparation of functionally terminated butadiene based polymers and block polymers containing sufficient amounts of trans-1,4 butadiene units to crystallize.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1983Date of Patent: March 5, 1985Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Robert E. Patent number: 4497748Abstract: Divinyl benzene and/or diisopropenyl benzene in hydrocarbon solvent is added over a period of time at low temperature to a hydrocarbon solvent containing a C.sub.2-20 normal, secondary or tertiary alkyl or cycloalkyl lithium compound and a tertiary alkylamine having 2-4 carbon atoms prepared at low temperature to provide an initiator having an average of from 4 to 9 C-Li sites and a VPO Mn of from about 750 to 4,000. These initiators are useful in polymerizing dienes and vinyl monomers to provide star polymers having an average of from about 4 to 9 arms or branches. These star polymers among other things are useful low profile or low shrink additives for FRPs, e.g., glass fiber reinforced plastics.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1982Date of Patent: February 5, 1985Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Francis J. Patent number: 4473994Abstract: A hay rake tine assembly is disclosed in which the tines are attached to a mounting plate by an elastomeric body which buckles upon the application of excessive force to the tines. The buckling decreases the spring rate of the body and avoids excessive tension and compression forces, which may result in failure of the metal-rubber bonds. The body also includes a clearance for the deflection of the tine. The assembly also includes an engagement between the tine and the mounting plates so that the tine will not drop in the event of rubber failure.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1982Date of Patent: October 2, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Richard D. Patent number: 4469748Abstract: An aramid reinforcing element is treated with a cold gas plasma of air, N.sub.2, He, Ne or Ar or mixture thereof at up to 300 watts power for a few seconds to several minutes to improve its adhesion to rubber compounds.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1983Date of Patent: September 4, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Satish C. Patent number: 4466473Abstract: A method of making radial pneumatic tires substantially reduces or eliminates sidewall indentations in the inflated tire. A plurality of cuts is made in one end of each layer of ply fabric where the end of the ply fabric overlaps the other end to form a splice which results in the generally annular shape of the ply layer. The cuts extend in a direction generally transverse to the end edge and preferably have a length which is approximately the same as the width of the overlap of the cut edge with the other edge. The cuts prevent overtensioning of the ply cords, which otherwise result in sidewall indentations.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1983Date of Patent: August 21, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Frank E. Matyja, Edward C. Sebak

Patent number: 4453992Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a pocket filled with lubricant attached to the inner sidewall of the tire having a puncture sealant surrounded by an O-ring built into the inside wall of the pocket. The puncture sealant allows lubricant to be injected into the pocket by use of a syringe and eliminates the need for subsequent sealing of the pocket and leakage of lubricant from the pocket.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1981Date of Patent: June 12, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Tiong H. Patent number: 4450025Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for applying an envelope-type wrapping to tire bead rings. The apparatus and method are particularly useful when the wrapping material is to be applied directly over a lubricant coating on the bead ring. The apparatus includes a radially expansible drum, and an inflatable bladder that covers the drum and is interposed, along with the wrapping material, between the bead ring and the drum. According to the method of the invention, the bladder is inflated and rolled over in a desired sequence of steps to apply an envelope wrapping to the bead ring.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1983Date of Patent: May 22, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Virgil E. Patent number: 4448956Abstract: Polyamides such as nylon-6 type polyamides are prepared by the reaction or copolymerization of a major amount by weight of a lactam and a minor amount by weight of a graft copolymer of maleic anhydride on a low molecular weight liquid conjugated diene polymer or copolymer or of a copolymer of a conjugated diene and a monovinyl aryl monomer or a nitrile. For example, a graft of maleic anhydride on liquid butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer is copolymerized with epsilon-caprolactam using an anionic lactam polymerization catalyst (a lactamate salt) like the reaction product of ethyl magnesium bromide and epsilon-caprolactam. The present invention may be useful in a RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) process. The resulting polyamides have improved impact strength and water resistance. They can be used to make automobile and truck bodies and parts.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1983Date of Patent: May 15, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Gerd M. Lenke, Earl G. Patent number: 4447065Abstract: A U-shaped polymeric strip to be mounted on a body flange adjacent a vehicle door opening has an improved sealing structure for preventing moisture from seeping around the end of the body flange inside the U-shaped strip. The sealing structure is located at the inside of the base of the U-shaped strip and comprises a polymeric material, such as sponge rubber, that is relatively soft compared to the relatively hard polymeric material of the main portions of the strip. The relatively soft polymeric material of the sealing structure is formed into two parts, each having a convex outer surface, separated by a slot that extends lengthwise of the strip and receives the edge of the body flange.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1983Date of Patent: May 8, 1984Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Ronald E.
