Patents Assigned to The Geon Company
  • Patent number: 5356282
Abstract: An extrusion head for a blow molding machine wherein a movable plunger is slidably mounted in a distributor head which receives a melt at an inlet end of its channel and directs it along such channel to the terminal end of the channel while simultaneously directing portions of it along spiral radial paths to the lower circumferential edge of the distributor head to fill an accumulator chamber which also causes the plunger to recede facilitating the filling of the accumulator chamber. The channel as defined by the adjacent circumferential wall and the curvilinear contour on the distributor head defines a smooth integral flow channel that is curvilinear in cross section.

  • Patent number: 5345018
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of synthesizing 1-chloro-1-iodoethane by reacting hydrogen iodide with vinyl chloride monomer in the presence of an iodine containing catalyst under certain specified conditions. The resulting product of the reaction is a high yield, high purity 1-chloro-1-iodoethane. This 1-chloro-1-iodoethane is useful as a chain transfer agent in the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer in a process which mimics a pseudo-living radical polymerization.

  • Patent number: 5298558
Abstract: The present invention relates to electrostatic dissipative impact modified polymeric compositions comprising an effective amount of a chain extended block copolymer, polyvinyl halide and no more than 10 weight parts of a polymeric impact modifier per 100 weight parts of polyvinyl chloride. The chain extended block copolymer is formed from reacting a di-functional polyether with a chain extender which is a condensate selected from the group consisting of polyundecanolactam, polydodecanolactam, poly(11-aminoundecanoic acid) and (12-aminododecanoic acid).

  • Patent number: 5292703
Abstract: The subject invention relates to catalyst compositions for oxychlorination of ethylene to produce 1,2-dichloroethane. The catalysts comprise copper chloride, at least one alkali metal, at least one rare earth metal, and at least one Group IIA metal on a high surface area support for fluid bed applications or on a high or low surface area support for fixed bed applications. The catalyst compositions are prepared by depositing the metals on a support. The use of the catalyst compositions of the invention in the oxychlorination of ethylene to EDC results in high percent ethylene efficiency, high EDC product purity and high percent HCl conversion without exhibiting catalyst stickiness. A process for oxychlorination of ethylene to produce 1,2-dichloroethane is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5292823
Abstract: Polyvinyl halide resin absent allylic halogen is disclosed. Another polyvinyl halide resin absent allylic halogen, allylic branching and unsaturation is also disclosed. The compositions of this invention are prepared by contacting any polyvinyl halide resin with a hydrogen-substituting compound that has a selective affinity for the allylic halogens.

  • Patent number: 5290890
Abstract: This invention discloses methods of polymerization in the field of PVC dispersion resins, in particular, dispersion PVC, made by the emulsion or microsuspension process with or without monomer metering. The invention achieves improved initial plastisol color without destroying blush resistance by employing techniques which entail at least two air evacuation steps. In the preferred embodiment a specified amount of a metabisulfite reducing agent is incorporated into the polymerization medium and/or monomer mixture followed by polymerization initiaton and further processing. Another disclosure of the invention is a simple method for reducing the haze of dispersion resin plastisol films thereby improving their clarity by the addition of a small amount of non-copolymerizable polybasic carboxylic acid to the dispersion resin or monomer dispersion prior to isolating the resin. The preferred poly basic acids are non-ethylenic unsaturated, di- or tri-carboxylic acids like citric acid and tartaric acid.

  • Patent number: 5290852
Abstract: An internally plasticized polyvinyl halide obtained by the polymerization of a vinyl halide monomer in the presence of a polyester polymeric plasticizer substantially derived from glutaric acid and a diol. Articles made therefrom exhibit a unique balance of improved permanence, low plasticizer extraction high clarity and low haze. The polymers are particularly suitable for use in automotive interior parts or containers for blood components or foodstuffs.
