  • Patent number: 4756075
Abstract: A discoidal, flat coil armature for a flat disc motor is formed by winding coils of wire on mutually spaced inner and outer ring structures. The inner ring structure surrounds a commutator body having segments with tangs. Automatic apparatus, including a rotating flier, a preform clamp and rotator, and a wire guide assembly, winds the coils and makes coil terminal connections to the commutator tangs before, during, and after the winding of the coils. The coils are tightly wound on the ring structures so that they form, along with the ring structures and the commutator body, an armature preform having a self-supporting shape. The parts of the finished preform are bonded together and to an armature shaft by a matrix of resinous material.

  • Patent number: 4459742
Abstract: To increase the slot fill of armatures wound on a flier type armature winding machine of the type having inner and outer commutator shields, the outer shield is retracted during a portion of each winding cycle for each coil to permit the rotating fliers to draw the wires nearer to the armature shaft and thus deeper into the coil receiving slots. The inner shield, which has notches for exposing a pair of commutator hooks, is rotated to position the notches outside of the paths of the wire when the outer shield is retracted. A tamper assembly is provided for engaging the coil ends immediately after they are wound. The tamper assembly includes tamper rods slidably supported by the winding forms and also includes actuators for pushing the tamper rods into engagement with the coil ends. The tamper assembly may be operated after each winding cycle or only after selected winding cycles.

  • Patent number: 4279277
Abstract: Apparatus for manufacturing dynamoelectric field windings having plural edge would coils formed from wire strapping includes a mandrel with a plurality of cores pieces. The mandrel is intermittently rotated about a first axis to present the core pieces to a winding station and rotated about a second axis to form an edge-wound coil about the core piece then present at the winding station. A wire feed and guide assembly having a wire forming head through which the strapping extends to the winding station assists in edge bending the strappng to form coils on the core pieces and is moved both vertically and horizontally to assist in edge bending transition strapping portions between successively wound coils. Also disclosed are a wire hook forming tool for forming a hook at the leading end of the strapping with which such leading end is held fixed to the mandrel, a wire cutting assembly for cutting the strapping to proper lengths and a movable tooling for shaping the windings as they are wound.

  • Patent number: 4163931
Abstract: An armature winding machine of the type having a flier for winding wire onto a core is driven by a servo system, including a direct current servo motor. The servo system is under the direction of a wind sequence control mechanism. To convert command signals from the wind sequence control mechanism to motor commands usable by the servo system and to prevent wire breakage, command signals issued from the wind sequence control mechanism are modified by motor interface control circuitry which includes acceleration, deceleration, speed select and direction control circuitry.

  • Patent number: 4158314
Abstract: A reciprocating and oscillating ram for a winding head is reciprocated and oscillated at high speeds by a single drive shaft and a rotary to reciprocatory and oscillatory movement mechanism including a carriage, adjustable Scotch yoke drive means reciprocally driving the carriage, a rack bar slidably mounted on the carriage and a pinion member engaging rack teeth on the rack bar and affixed to the ram. The rack bar follows reciprocal movements of a plate that carries cam followers driven by a cam mounted on the drive shaft. The Scotch yoke mechanism includes an adjustable length crank arm with a counterbalance. The movements of the carriage are counterbalanced by reciprocatory movement of a counterbalance carriage driven by a similar crank arm.Wire is guided to the ram by a non-rotating wire feed tube connected to the carriage for reciprocation therewith and projecting to the rear of the machine. A wire guide pulley is mounted on the rear end of the feed tube for guiding wire from a wire source.

  • Patent number: 4087054
Abstract: A transfer mechanism for transferring armature forms between a supply pallet and an armature winding machine comprises a turret plate rotatable through 180.degree. angles for presenting opposite margins thereof successively to said supply pallet and said winding machine. In operation, the supply pallet is indexed to receive wound armature forms held by a first armature gripping mechanism mounted on said turret plate and to supply unwound armature forms to said first gripping mechanism. As these events occur, the turret plate supports a second armature gripping mechanism which presents unwound armature forms to the winding machine. The winding machine has winding guide members cooperating with semicircular spaces located in a post projecting upwardly from a mounting plate supporting the turret plate to support the unwound armature forms in position for the winding of coils thereon.

  • Patent number: 4086117
Abstract: Apparatus for wrapping tape around the end of a stator coil. The apparatus advances tape from a spool to a position near the coil end, where it is clamped by clamping members and cut, and a section of the tape adjacent the leading end is pressed against one side of the coil end. The trailing end of the tape is then pushed around the opposite side of the coil end where it is received by the clamping members. The trailing end is moved by the clamping members toward the leading end to draw the trailing end tightly around the coil and press it to the leading end.

  • Patent number: 4062502
Abstract: A fast acting, high response wire takeup device that takes up and releases lengths of wire in response to changes in wire demand or tension required by a coil winder or the like includes two car mounted pulleys movable along straight, parallel paths and yieldably restrained against movement toward one another. Wire is guided to one of the pulleys and away from the other pulley along paths which are at acute angles to the stretch of wire between the pulleys and the moving mass associated with the pulleys is minimal so that relatively large lengths of wire may be rapidly taken up and released as required. Modifications are also disclosed. The wire demand or tension responsive takeup device is disclosed as part of apparatus for supplying wire to the shuttle spindle of a high speed stator winder, the apparatus further including a wire tensioning device and a powered takeup device operated synchronously with the shuttle spindle.
