Abstract: A double flier armature winding machine is provided with two wire trimming assemblies, one for each flier, each having a trimming head with a sharp edge against which a lead wire is severed by abruptly moving a wire clamp gripped to the lead wire in a direction to cause the wire to be stretched over the sharp edge.
Abstract: To increase the slot fill of armatures wound on a flier type armature winding machine of the type having inner and outer commutator shields, the outer shield is retracted during a portion of each winding cycle for each coil to permit the rotating fliers to draw the wires nearer to the armature shaft and thus deeper into the coil receiving slots. The inner shield, which has notches for exposing a pair of commutator hooks, is rotated to position the notches outside of the paths of the wire when the outer shield is retracted. A tamper assembly is provided for engaging the coil ends immediately after they are wound. The tamper assembly includes tamper rods slidably supported by the winding forms and also includes actuators for pushing the tamper rods into engagement with the coil ends. The tamper assembly may be operated after each winding cycle or only after selected winding cycles.
Abstract: A starter motor field winding assembly comprises a stator ring, plural pole pieces on the ring, and a field winding comprising an uninterruptedly continuous conductor wound to encircle the pole pieces. The conductor comprises strapping edge wound about cores to form coils. The strapping between coils is edge bent to form connections from one coil to the next. The cores about which the coils are formed may be affixed to an arbor or may be removably mounted on the arbor and thereafter assembled to a stator ring to form the pole pieces of the completed stator assembly.
Abstract: Apparatus for manufacturing dynamoelectric field windings having plural edge would coils formed from wire strapping includes a mandrel with a plurality of cores pieces. The mandrel is intermittently rotated about a first axis to present the core pieces to a winding station and rotated about a second axis to form an edge-wound coil about the core piece then present at the winding station. A wire feed and guide assembly having a wire forming head through which the strapping extends to the winding station assists in edge bending the strappng to form coils on the core pieces and is moved both vertically and horizontally to assist in edge bending transition strapping portions between successively wound coils. Also disclosed are a wire hook forming tool for forming a hook at the leading end of the strapping with which such leading end is held fixed to the mandrel, a wire cutting assembly for cutting the strapping to proper lengths and a movable tooling for shaping the windings as they are wound.
