Abstract: There is disclosed compounds of the structural formula: ##STR1## wherein X is a radical of the structural formula:--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --NH--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --yand y is 0,1,2 or 3; which when combined with a nonhalogenated vulcanizable diene containing elastomer such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene/butadiene copolymers, terpolymers of acrylonitrile butadiene and styrene and blends thereof accelerate the rate of vulcanization without detrimentally impacting the processing safety of the rubber. These compounds either in free form structural formula (I) or as preformed complexes with zinc structural formula (II) in the plus 2 valence state offer significantly enhanced rates of cure and excellent final physical properties without a significant loss of processing safety. The preformed nonhalogenated zinc complexes (II) may be added to sulfur vulcanizable rubbers at levels that maintain typical levels of zinc in the rubber compound.
Abstract: A nonmetallic cable (20) having utility in an overlay ply (39) of a tire (10) comprises two yarns (21,22). One of the yarns (21,22) has a yarn twist of either zero or is twisted in a first direction. The other yarn (21,22) has a yarn twist that is not zero, but is twisted in a direction opposite to the direction of yarn twist in the first yarn (21,22). The cable (20) has a cable twist that is opposite in direction to the twist of the yarn (21,22) having the larger of the two yarn twists. The cable has an elongation of 4% when it is subjected to a force of not greater than 12 Newtons. A tire (10) having a belt structure (30) has an overlay (39) comprising said cables disposed radially outwardly of at least one of the belt plies (31-35).
Abstract: High molecular weight polyester resins such as polyethylene terephthalate, are sometimes produced from low molecular weight polyester prepolymers having the same composition by solid state polymerization. The low molecular weight polyester prepolymers which are used in such solid state polymerizations are normally prepared by conventional melt polymerizations and are generally in the form of pellets or chips. It has been unexpectedly found that solid state polymerization rates can be greatly improved by utilizing polyester prepolymers which are in the form of porous pills. By utilizing polyester prepolymers that are in the form of porous pills, higher molecular weights can be achieved after shorter solid state polymerization times.
Abstract: A tire has on its inner surface an elastomeric air barrier coating, which is formed by photocuring a compositioin comprising: (a) an end capped prepolymer (MW 2500-10,000) formed by reacting a polyester diol (MW750-1500) with a diisocyanate, and reacting the resulting diisocyanate terminated prepolymer with an end group forming compound; (b) one or more monofunctional addition polymerizable monomers; and (c) a photoinitiator or mixture thereof. In preferred embodiments, the polyester diol is hydroxyl terminated ethylene adipate, the diisocyanate is TDI, and the end group forming compound is 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylane (HEMA). The monofunctional monomer may be or include N-vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP). The air barrier coating has high elongation, low modulus, good heat aging resistance and good adhesion to the tire in addition to low oxygen permeability.

Abstract: This invention relates to the discovery that a morpholine polysulfide, such as morpholine tetrasulfide, in combination with a substituted triazine having at least one dialkyl dithiocarbamyl radical provides for excellent vulcanization of rubbers and results in an improved final rubber vulcanizate possessing superior physical properties and reversion resistance.
Abstract: There is disclosed an improved method for open steam curing of mineral-loaded elastomers. It has been discovered that use of a vulcanization agent comprising a mixture of an alkyl phenol disulfide and a guanidine compound provides a synergistic curing system that is superior over the use of either component alone. The improved curing system of the present invention is particularly suited for the open steam curing of mineral-loaded chlorobutyl compounds. The cure system may be used in addition to zinc oxide and results in excellent states of cure as determined by tensile elongation and hardness measurements.
Abstract: Aramid-reinforced elastomers, including rubber, in which the elastomer is reinforced with aramid in the form of short, discontinuous, fibrillated fibers, are disclosed. The fibers are composed of a trunk portion having a length of about 0.2-5 mm, a diameter of about 0.005-0.02 mm (5-20 micrometers), and an aspect ratio greater than 100, and numerous fibrils extending outwardly from the trunk and having diameters substantially smaller than the trunk diameter. The surface area of the fibers is from about 4 to about 20 square meters per gram, and is about 30 to 60 times the equivalent surface area of fibers in the form of rod having the same diameter distribution as that of the trunks of the fibers herein, but with no fibrils. The fibers are oriented. Incorporation of the fibers results in substantial increase in stiffness and modulus. Loading of aramid fibers is typically about 0.2-20 phr.
Abstract: A pneumatic tire (1) comprises a radial carcass (2), a tread portion (7) and a belt reinforcing structure (8) extending circumferentially around the carcass (2). Disposed radially outwardly of the belt reinforcing structure (8) is a textile reinforced overlay structure (9) having substantially circumferentially extending cords (10). The overlay structure (9) is composed of a series of helical convolutions of a textile ribbon (11) whereby adjacent helical convolutions of the textile ribbon (11) overlap. There is further disclosed a method of applying multiple layers of a single continuous helically wound textile ribbon (11) in a single continuous operation from one axial side to the other axial side of the belt reinforcing structure (8).

Abstract: There is disclosed a method for enhancing the cure of a sulfur vulcanizable elastomer which comprises adding to the vulcanizable elastomer a mixture of tall oil fatty acids comprising at least (a) from about 28% to about 55% by weight of oleic acid, (b) from about 25% to about 40% by weight of linoleic acid, (c) from about 4% to about 20% conjugated linoleic acid and (d) from about 0% to about 8% rosin acids. Use of a mixture of tall oil acids as a cure activator significantly lowers the cost of producing the vulcanizate while concomitantly improving the adhesion and dynamic properties of the elastomer.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing a polymeric resin which contains repeat units which are derived from maleic anhydride in an emulsion polymerization process which comprises polymerizing a vinyl aromatic monomer and an alkyl acrylate monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of a styrene-maleic anhydride seed polymer which is neutralized with a tertiary amine. Such polymers, which contain repeat units which are derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer, an alkyl acrylate monomer, and maleic anhydride, are particularly useful as electrostatic image developing toner resins. For instance, resins, which are comprised of repeat units which are derived from styrene, butyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride, are particularly useful as toner resins.
