  • Patent number: 4859272
Abstract: A segmental drum (10) has spaced-apart inflatable turnup bladders (24) for folding each edge (28) of a belt (30) applied to the drum (10). The spacing of the bladders (24) is adjustable by axial movement in opposite directions of central hub assemblies (42,44) threaded on screws (76). Fine adjustment of the spacing to straigten the fold line (32) of each bladder (24) is provided by axial adjustment of rigid polyurethane bladder support brackets (18) connected to the central hub assemblies (42,44). Radial expansion of the segments (16) is provided by links (84) between each of the segments (16) and spaced drum expanding hub assemblies (86,88) threaded on a drum control screw (96). A molded central filler block (62) of rigid polyurethane is mounted on each segment (16) to fill the space between the bladder support brackets (18).

  • Patent number: 4857253
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a closed, hollow toroidal structure having a rigid internal annular plate includes treating one annular surface of the plate with a release coating, applying to the other annular surface of the plate an adhesion promoting coating and positioning the plate within a mold having a generally toroidal internal cavity. Next, a fluid conduit is juxtaposed partially within the internal cavity of the mold adjacent to the annular plate and partially outside the internal cavity of the mold. The mold cavity is then filled with an elastomer followed by curing under heat and pressure.

  • Patent number: 4856571
Abstract: A pneumatic tire (10) has a tread portion (11) comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending grooves (21,22,23) which divide the tread into axially spaced lands (24,25,26,27). Each land is subdivided into blocks (32X,32Y) by cross-slits (31). The blocks in each land (24,25,26,27) are arranged so that circumferentially adjacent blocks (32X,32Y) are axially offset relative to each other. The cross-slits (31A,31B,31C) in each land alternate circumferentially between axially extending cross-slits (31B) and biased angle cross-slits (31A,31C). The axially extending cross-slits (31B) are sipes and the biased angle cross-slits (31A,31C) may be either sipes or grooves.

  • Patent number: 4857122
Abstract: A viscoelastic fluid molding material is injected into a tire tread cavity between the mold and an inflatable tread supporting body. The clearance distance between the mold and the inflatable tread supporting body is varied to increase the flow of the initial amount of fluid molding material into remote portions of the tire tread cavity and provide for the flow of the final amount of fluid molding material into gate portions while the tread supporting body is being deflected.Circumferentially spaced gates may be spaced from the centerplane of the mold and have runners extending toward the shoulders of the tread supporting body for increased flow of the initial amount of fluid molding material into remote shoulder portions of the tread cavity. Sealing rings at the side edges of the tread cavity prevent flow of fluid molding material into sidewall areas of side members of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4856720
Abstract: In a method of fabricating hose, especially in very long unbroken lengths, an elongated core is mounted for rotation without longitudinal displacement and is driven simultaneously at both of its ends at a selected fixed speed. A bobbin having a length of tape wound on it is moved on a carrier along a path parallel to the length of the core, and the tape of the bobbin is wound helically onto the core while the core is rotating and the carrier is moving along the path. There may be plural bobbins, and the carrier may have a platform for a human operator who manipulates the bobbin from which tape is being wound. Tape from selected successive bobbins may be so wound in helical manner.

  • Patent number: 4855364
Abstract: It is often desirable to utilize accelerators in the sulfur vulcanization of unsaturated rubbers. In many cases a primary accelerator is used in combination with another accelerator, called a secondary accelerator or activator, which further increases the rate of vulcanization. It has been determined that compounds having the structural formula:NH.sub.2 --A--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.x NH].sub.n A--NH.sub.2wherein x is 2 or 3, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 100, and wherein A represents an alkylene group containing from 1 to 20 carbons atoms, act as secondary accelerators in the vulcanization of unsaturated rubbers. For example, it has been determined that 4,7-diaza-decane-1,10-diamine is a particularly desirable secondary accelerator.

  • Patent number: 4855402
Abstract: A self-emulsifiable resin powder can be dispersed in water without utilizing additional surfactants or expanding large amounts of mechanical energy. Such self-emulsifiable resin powders offer numerous distinct advantages over conventional latices. One of the most important benefits that is realized by utilizing self-emulsifiable resin powders is that they can be shipped dry which is the equivalent to shipping a latex with a 100 percent solids content. In other words, such self-emulsifiable resin powders eliminate the necessity for shipping water in latices. The self-emulsifiable resin powders disclosed herein also have the advantage of having low carboxyl contents and of being dispersible into aqueous systems which contain virtually no surfactants. These self-emulsifiable resins contain a relatively small proportion of repeat units which are derived from both acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.
