Each such hopper includes a container for particulate material, a container inlet by which particulate material can be loaded into the container by entrainment, and a container outlet through which particulate material can be unloaded from the container by entrainment. The system also includes a product loading internal manifold located within the hold of the ship and connected to a container inlet for a plurality of ship based hoppers, and a product unloading internal manifold located within the hold of the ship and connected to a container outlet for a plurality of ship based hoppers.

Abstract: A refuse collection vehicle includes a chassis and a storage container that is detachably mounted on the chassis. The storage container has a rear wall with an opening therein and a sweep panel that is mounted in the rear wall. The sweep panel is movable between an open position which exposes the opening in the rear wall of the container and a closed position which covers the opening in the rear wall of the container. The refuse collection vehicle also includes a rear tailgate assembly that has a hopper which is adapted to receive refuse and a packer assembly which is adapted to cooperate with the sweep panel to move refuse from the hopper of the tailgate assembly into the storage. A method for loading refuse in a storage container and a storage container that is useful in practicing such method are also described.

Abstract: A gate assembly for closing an open end of a storage compartment that is defined by a pair of side walls includes an upper member that is mounted on the side walls of the storage compartment so as to be movable between an open position and a closed position. The gate assembly also includes a lower member having a top side and a bottom side. The top side is pivotally attached to the upper member along a generally horizontal axis. The gate assembly also includes a cam that is attached to one of the side walls of the storage compartment and a follower that is adapted to interact with the cam. The cam and follower are mounted and arranged with respect to a side wall of the storage compartment and the lower member so that as the upper member is moved from the open position to the closed position, interaction between the cam and follower will cause the lower member to pivot about the generally horizontal axis so that its bottom side moves toward the open end of the storage compartment.

The assembly includes a pair of lower tracks, each of which is mounted on a sidewall in a generally parallel disposition to the other. The assembly also includes a pair of upper tracks each of which is mounted on a sidewall in a generally parallel disposition to the other. The pair of lower tracks define a plane that is substantially parallel to a plane defined by the pair of upper tracks. The assembly also includes a pair of lower track shoes which move in the lower tracks and a pair of upper track shoes which move in the upper tracks. The assembly also includes a carrier having a lower track end that is attached to a lower track shoe, an upper track end that is attached to an upper track shoe, and a lower side that is substantially parallel to the tracks within which said lower and upper track shoes are received.

Abstract: An assembly for mounting an accessory to the chassis of a vehicle includes an accessory mounting frame which includes a first base plate and a second base plate, and a pair of clamping mechanisms for mounting the base plates of the mounting frame to the horizontal portions of a pair of longitudinal frame components of the chassis. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, each clamping mechanism includes an elongated clamp block having a first end and a second end, and a fastener that is adapted to fasten the clamp block to the base plate. The first end of each clamp block is adapted to engage a surface of the horizontal portion of a longitudinal frame component, while the second end is adapted to engage the base plate while the base plate also engages a surface of the horizontal portion of the longitudinal frame component that is not engaged by the first end of the clamp block.

Abstract: A hatch cover assembly for an access port includes a hatch which is adapted to cover the access port and a mechanism for applying a generally vertically-directed force to the hatch to raise it upwardly off the port, while maintaining the hatch in a generally-horizontal attitude. The assembly also includes a mechanism for mounting the hatch on the access port so that the hatch may be rotated about a generally vertical shaft from a closed position which covers the port to an open position which exposes the port, while avoiding any non-pivotal horizontal movement of the hatch with respect to the access port.

Abstract: A method of collecting refuse including the steps of moving a first semi-trailer having a frame carrying a refuse collection body to a transfer site and coupling it to a fifth wheel of a vehicle. Refuse is deposited into the refuse collection body by engaging a refuse container with a loading mechanism carried by one of the first semi-trailer and vehicle. The first semi-trailer is then uncoupled from the vehicle at the transfer site and a second semi-trailer is coupled to the vehicle for further refuse collection. The second semi-trailer is returned to the transfer site and uncoupled. The first and second semi-trailers are then transported to a disposal site by coupling the vehicle to the first semi-trailer and attaching the second semi-trailer to a dolly. The dolly is coupled to the first semi-trailer.

Abstract: A front loading refuse collection vehicle has a refuse receiving body within which a compaction panel is movable between a refuse receiving position and refuse compacting positions spaced from the receiving position. A pair of hydraulically actuated power cylinder assemblies are connected to the body adjacent the refuse receiving end and to the compaction panel, the assemblies extending in criss-cross fashion one above the other. The ends of the assemblies connected to the panel are restrained by apparatus which is normally passive and does not interfere with the connection between each hydraulic cylinder assembly and the panel, but which upon failure of the connection between a hydraulic cylinder assembly and the panel restrains movement of the cylinder assembly having the failed connection so that the end of that assembly remains closely adjacent to the panel and between the side walls of the body.

Abstract: A side loading refuse collection vehicle having a carriage slidably mounted on a track and pivotally carrying a lift arm assembly including refuse container grabbing and dumping apparatus for grabbing a refuse container, lifting it and dumping it into the body of the vehicle includes a keeper plate secured to the carriage and a detent latch pivotally mounted on the frame for seizing and holding the keeper selectively. The carriage is slidably driven by a hydraulic cylinder assembly to extend and retract the carriage relative to the vehicle, and whenever the hydraulic cylinder assembly is actuated by an operator control switch the latch disengages from the keeper. When the hydraulic cylinder assembly is not actuated, the latch engages and holds the keeper and thereby prevents the lift arm from being flung outwardly in the event of a failure in the hydraulic cylinder assembly system.

The jaw members terminate in a pair of substantially parallel fastener portions. Each of the fastener portions has an opening formed therein. The fastener portion openings align to receive a fastener extending therethrough. The jaw members are arcuately shaped such that a substantially cylindrical opening is formed therebetween. The base member has a relief opening formed therein. The relief opening communicates with the substantially cylindrical opening.

Abstract: A pair of elongate, segmented gripping members are carried by the lifting member of a refuse collection vehicle. Each of the gripping members includes an inner arm movably carried by the lifting member and an outer arm movably extending from the inner arm. The gripping members are movable between a retracted position in which the inner arms extend in generally opposite directions, fore and aft along the side of the vehicle, and an extended position in which the inner arms extend in generally the same direction laterally outward from the vehicle. Each outer arm is inwardly movable relative the respective inner arm to draw a container into the embrace of the gripping members. A pair of elongate flexible members engage the container to supplement the grip of the gripping members.

Abstract: An improved tailgate for a recyclable material container mounted on a vehicle chassis includes an upper door normally closing an upper compartment opening and a lower door normally closing a lower compartment opening. The upper door is pivotally connected at an upper portion thereof to an upper portion of the container. The lower door has a pair of support arms extending upwardly therefrom, each of which is movably connected at its upper portion to an upper portion of the container. The upper and lower doors each further includes a lifting mechanism for translating the respective door from a normally closed to an open position.
