  • Patent number: 6506971
Abstract: A method of designing a single- or a multi-phase electric cable for conducting current through insulated conductors and creating a weak external magnetic field, so as to obtain a cable wherein at least one of the above-mentioned conductors is assembled from two or more insulated sub-conductors connected in parallel, and wherein the sum of cross-sectional areas of the sub-conductors is equal to a design cross-sectional area of the conductor. The arrangement in the cable is such that each of the sub-conductors is adjacent to a conductor or a sub-conductor associated with either a different phase or a different current direction, and the sum of magnetic moments of magnetic dipoles formed from all currents passing through the cable is zero.

  • Patent number: 5537822
Abstract: A compressed air energy storage (CAES) system utilizes compressed air stored in a cavity for electric power and cold production. During periods of excess power production, atmospheric air is compressed then cooled in stages using energy from a motor/generator. Condensed water is then separated from the air which is then stored in a cavity. When there is an energy demand from the CAES system, the stored compressed air is heated using heat from an external low grade energy source such as refrigerated substances, surrounding water, surrounding air, waste heat sources and solar energy. The heated compressed air is then expanded through a plurality of expansion stages to provide mechanical power to the motor/generator for generating electricity.

  • Patent number: 5278069
Abstract: A bioleaching process is utilized for the extraction of metals from coal fly ash (CFA). The CFA is suspended in an acidic sea water based culture medium and the suspension is incubated with a microorganism culture comprising at least one strain of Thiobacillus thiooxidans capable of growing and producing sulfuric acid in the sea water based acidic culture medium and thereby facilitating the extraction of metals from the CFA. The extracted metals are separated from the CFA raffinate and microorganism cells and are fractionated to provide metal-enriched fractions. A selected Thiobacillus thiooxidans strain is described which has been designated as Thiobacillus thiooxidans ZYR1, a sample of which has been deposited under No. 40453 at the National Collections of Industrial and Marine Bacteria Ltd. (NCIMB) at Aberdeen, Scotland. This selected strain is particularly suitable for the bioleaching of metals from coal fly ash.

  • Patent number: 5231018
Abstract: Metal oxides are extracted from coal fly ash by a bio-leading process. The ash is suspended in an aqueous saline solution having a pH within the range of from 5 to 8 and the suspension is incubated with a microorganism strain capable of growing in aqueous saline solution and binding to metal oxide, and the resulting agglomerates are separated.A new gram-positive bacterial strain designated GIN-1 and being a member of the genus Rhodococcus is described. It has been deposited under No. 40340 at the National Collections of Industrial and Marine Bacterial Ltd. (NCIMB) at Aberdeen, Scotland.GIN-1 is particularly suitable for the bioteching of metal oxides from coal fly ash.
