Patents Assigned to The Koehring Company
  • Patent number: 5125720
Abstract: A socket for holding a cutting bit is removably attached by one or more resilient pins to a base permanently secured to a rotor. The pins are inserted through partially aligned openings in the socket and base and are radially expandable to bias load bearing surfaces on the socket into firm engagement with load bearing surfaces on the base. The pins themselves bear a portion of the cutting forces, the pins being selected to fail in shear when extraordinary forces are encountered in order to prevent damage to the bases and the welds securing the bases to the rotor.

  • Patent number: 4621871
Abstract: A mounting for quickly removing and replacing cutter teeth on a rotary drum includes a cutter tooth socket mating with a socket housing defining a tapered channel having a base surface and a lateral surfaces inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tapered channel and oriented at an acute angle with respect to the base surface to retain the cutter tooth socket by a wedging action. The cutter tooth socket is also retained on the socket housing by a spring retainer seated in a recess in the base surface and engaging a protrusion depending in a groove defined by the cutter tooth socket. A leading side of the cutter tooth socket with respect to the direction of cutter movement contains oblique surfaces to cam to the side the material of the surface being cut. A dummy cap is inserted in socket housings from which the cutter teeth sockets have been removed and extends beyond the socket housings toward the surface being cut to protect the socket housings from wear by the work surface.

  • Patent number: 4532914
Abstract: A portable LP gas heater includes a combustion chamber the discharge end of which is open and unobstructed and the inlet end of which is defined by a rear head plate having a central primary air inlet into which projects, to a limited degree, a cylindrical fuel nozzle. The projected extremity of the nozzle which positions within the combustion chamber mounts a transversely disposed baffle which is parallel to and spaced preferably about one inch from the rear head plate. Fuel exits from and about the nozzle immediately adjacent and upstream of the baffle. The baffle has a size which permits it to be introduced to and removed from the combustion chamber by way of the primary air inlet. The rear head is further distinguished by a single group of apertures located adjacent its outer periphery in a substantially ring-like pattern.

  • Patent number: 4474166
Abstract: A wick heater comprises a housing the top and front panel of which are so constructed and interrelated with each other and the remainder of the housing to provide for their relative expansion and contraction in a manner to avoid warping, buckling or distortion or any undue stress on the housing or its component parts during operation of the heater. The top of the housing comprises a frame and inserts, a principal insert being interconnected with and for expansion and contraction relative to the frame and to position directly above the chimney of the heater and the area encompassed by its backing heat reflecting surface. This principal insert has a unique pattern of slots the bounding edges of which are flanged and a portion of which are oriented in directions at right angles to other of said slots to lend both strength and stress accommodation to the top of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4458763
Abstract: The present invention relates to a soil stabilizer machine with a recycler screen. The soil stabilizer machine includes a horizontal rotor having a plurality of teeth along a periphery thereof. In operation, the machine moves along the ground and the rotor rotates to dig soil material. The soil dug by the rotor is comminuted by the rotor within a housing surrounding the rotor. Inside the housing and behind the rotor a screen is positioned to selectively permit particles of soil of less than a predetermined size to be dispensed on the ground behind the rotor and to selectively return particles of soil or rock greater than the predetermined size to the rotor to be further comminuted by the rotor. In a preferred embodiment, the screen is pivotably mounted within the housing between first and second positions.

  • Patent number: 4443187
Abstract: A heater including a generally cylindrical shell defining its housing arranged in a very closely spaced relation to the outer periphery of its combustion chamber assembly and its fan device as it bounds a plenum chamber therebetween. The combustion chamber assembly has its discharge end adjacent the discharge end of the shell. The relative configuration of the outer peripheral surface of the combustion chamber assembly and that of the discharge end portion of the shell creates therebetween a passage through which the fan device, on energization thereof, produces a very high velocity flow of a thin layer of air which, on discharge, is throttled and abruptly and sharply driven into the center of the flow from the assembly. The effect of this is to moderate and influence a relative uniformity of the temperature of the discharge and rapidly project it outwardly of and considerably beyond the heater.

  • Patent number: 4421435
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for applying a thin film of a liquid to a vibratory plate arranged on an edge of a vibratory compactor. The apparatus for applying the thin film of liquid includes a container assembly for holding the liquid adjacent the plate. Liquid is preferably supplied to the container assembly under the influence of gravity. An element for maintaining intimate contact between a thin liquid film and a front surface of the plate as the thin film moves downwardly along the plate surface is arranged within a lower portion of the container assembly. The element is arranged adjacent to an outlet from the container provided along substantially the entire width of the front plate. The thin liquid film flows from the container as a low velocity laminar flow along the surface of the plate in the form of a liquid sheet. The liquid remains in contact with the plate surface due primarily to surface tension as the liquid moves downwardly.

  • Patent number: 4367054
Abstract: A vibratory roller includes a vibrator operably connected to a rotatable compacting roll. The vibrator is comprised of a rotatable shaft mounted co-axially to the roll and a casing mounted on the shaft and including a chamber and an eccentric mass within the chamber the mass being transversely displaceable in the chamber. Movement of the mass within the chamber provides a variable amplitude for the vibrations induced thereby. The movement of the mass is caused by centrifugal force which urges the mass radially outwardly against a fluid storage space radially outwards of the eccentric mass in the chamber, such chamber in turn communicates through a port with a portion of the chamber radially inwards of the eccentric mass. Fluid thus flows from the radially outwards storage space through the port to the radially inwards storage space and the eccentric mass moves radially outwards until the eccentric mass closes off the port.

  • Patent number: 4353261
Abstract: A vibratory mechanism comprises a motor-driven shaft, a first mass carried by the shaft for rotation therewith, and a variable mass supported for rotation relative to the shaft whereby the angular relationship between the first mass and the variable mass can be selectively adjusted to vary the amplitude of vibration. A drive member is rotatable with the shaft. The variable mass carries a plurality of longitudinally and circumferentially spaced abutment surfaces. The drive member carries a contact face. Engagement between the contact face and the abutment surfaces occurs at different angular relationships between the first mass and the variable mass to vary the amplitude of vibration.

  • Patent number: 4342335
Abstract: A hydraulic pilot valve having an improved detent mechanism. The pilot valve includes a pair of lever operated plunger members which operate sliding valve members to control the opening and closing of a pair of work ports. Biasing members urge the plunger members to an extended position so as to maintain contact with the lever, and a pair of detent mechanisms act to hold the respective plunger members in the extended position. Movement of the lever to depress either of the plunger members and thus operate the respective valve members to open either of the work ports allows the respective biasing member to move the other plunger member to its extended position where it is held in place by its respective detent mechanism, thus holding the lever in its cocked position.
