Patents Assigned to The Kohler Coating Machinery Corporation
  • Patent number: 6068701
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying adhesive to the flutes of corrugated board to bond a face thereto. An applicator roll is provided with a uniform thin coating of adhesive by a flexible bar urged toward the surface of the applicator roll. A rider roll is provided adjacent the applicator roll and at the same height to form a vertical space for passage of the board therebetween so that the amount of glue applied to the tip of the flutes is directly proportional to the speed of the applicator roll. The space between the applicator roll and the rider roll is precisely controlled to minimize the amount of crush or deformation of the flutes during the application of the adhesive thereto. The dwell time in which the flutes are in contact with the adhesive layer on the applicator roll is reduced by minimizing the size of the rider roll and wrapping the face substantially around the rider roll.

  • Patent number: 5383622
Abstract: A continuous web winder is provided with an improved web cutter and transfer mechanism to wind the web on a new core. The moving web is positioned near the core between a blade and a web deflector. The web is deflected into the blade to cleanly cut the web and urge it toward the core. An air current is induced in a channel between the core and a hood to evacuate air from under the web and pull the web toward the core. The core can be provided with a low tack adhesive to ensure adherence of the web on the core. The web winds without folding back on itself to form a smooth roll.

  • Patent number: 5378503
Abstract: A web coater is provided with a doctor blade having an active edge or tip engaging the web at a predetermined position. The force applied by such active edge is adjusted by movement of jaws gripping the opposite edge of the blade. The jaws are moved along a curve empirically established to maintain the active edge of the blade in a predetermined fixed position during the adjustment. The angle of incidence of the active edge of the blade relative to the web is also maintained constant by pivoting a blade supporting frame about an axis coincident with the active edge. A controller is supplied with empirically established data developed by utilizing test blades to establish polynomial formulas having constants corresponding to each of the various blades intended to be used by the coater. The controller also automatically compensates for blade wear.

  • Patent number: 5226577
Abstract: An air bar web guide provides lateral adjustment of a running web passing through the guide so that the web exiting the guide is maintained in a constant lateral position. The path length of the web passing through the guide is maintained constant and does not vary from one edge of the web to the other edge. The guide includes a pair of idler rolls journaled for rotation about parallel axes and a pair of air bar guides also maintained parallel to each other. The air bar guides are mounted for pivotal movement with respect to the idler rolls to angulated positions when lateral adjustment of the web is required. A cam system driven by a linkage responsive to the angulated position of the air bar guides moves one of the idler rolls toward and away from the other idler roll to maintain a constant path length of the web passing through the guide system.

  • Patent number: 4863087
Abstract: A running web adjustable guide apparatus is disclosed in which substantial lateral adjustment of the web can be accomplished without changing the length of the path of the web through the apparatus. With this guide apparatus, distortion or damage to the web is eliminated. Various set-ups are possible with the preferred embodiment so that the direction of the web can be changed as it moves through the apparatus or maintained constant. Further, in some set-ups the web is inverted. In other set-ups, the web is not inverted. Further, the apparatus can be arranged so the components thereof engage both sides of the web or only one side. In all cases, a movable roller extends perpendicular to the path of the web approaching and leaving such roller, and a movable guide bar is provided which also moves in the same direction as the movable roller but through a distance twice as great as the distance of movement of the movable roller.

  • Patent number: 4697542
Abstract: A fluid nozzle for use in coating a traveling web has an elongated nozzle body formed by a first rigid boxlike section having a pair of converging walls and a second less rigid section pivotally mounted on the first section. A pair of lips are mounted on the nozzle body sections and define a nozzle opening through which fluid is discharged from a fluid chamber formed within the first body section and directed against the web. One of the lips is mounted on one of the converging body walls and the other lip is mounted on a support plate forming part of the second body section for adjusting the size of the fluid discharge opening. The support plate and attached nozzle lip of the second section are pivotally moved with respect to the first section by a plurality of levers which are moved in unison by pressure actuated cylinders or by two continuous pressure actuated tubes mounted between the support plate and nozzle body.

  • Patent number: 4513915
Abstract: An improved nozzle of the type which directs a flow of fluid against a moving substrate to obtain a uniform surface coating on the substrate. The nozzle consists of two rigid body halves mounted on a fluid feed pipe. One body half is fixed, and the other body half is rotatably mounted on the feed pipe for adjusting the size of the nozzle discharge opening. One or more closure loading assemblies are mounted on the nozzle for adjusting the size of the discharge opening and for maintaining the nozzle opening in an adjusted position. Each closure loading assembly has a fluid-actuated cylinder which forces the body halves toward a closed position opposing the internal fluid pressure in the nozzle body in combination with an adjustable differential screw. The adjustable screw is mounted on one of the body halves and engages a stop on the other body half to set the size of the nozzle discharge opening.

  • Patent number: 4469043
Abstract: A mechanism for cleaning the discharge opening lips of a coating control nozzle by controlled movement of a plurality of brushes transversely along the nozzle lips. A carriage is mounted on a support frame and is moved along the frame by a rodless cylinder. A plurality of brushes rotated by air motors are mounted on the carriage and are moved along the nozzle lips for cleaning by the carriage. The brushes are mounted on one end of a bellcrank which is attached to the carriage and are pivotally moved into and out of engagement with the nozzle lips by a fluid actuated cylinder mounted on the carriage. One of the brushes engages and cleans the inside surfaces of both nozzle lips simultaneously with two pairs of brushes which clean the outside surfaces of both lips as the carriage moves the brushes transversely along the nozzle opening. A stop is engaged by the bellcrank to limit the pivotal movement of the bellcrank to position the brushes with respect to the nozzle lips.

  • Patent number: 3936549
Abstract: Coating apparatus for applying a coating liquid to a moving roll. The apparatus has a trough-like pan, longer than the width of the roll surface to be coated, for holding a supply of the coating liquid. A pair of weirs is mounted on the pan which holds the coating liquid partially impounded therebetween. The weirs are spaced closer than the ends of the roll and the width of the roll surface to be coated. The weirs each are formed with a curved concave central portion having a radius the same or slightly larger than the radius of the roll, and with at least one overflow end portion to serve as a spillway. Coating liquid is supplied continuously to the central portion of the pan between the weirs and is drained continuously from the weir overflow end portions. The level of the coating liquid between the weirs is maintained at a higher level than coating liquid outside the weirs.
