Patent number: 6068701Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying adhesive to the flutes of corrugated board to bond a face thereto. An applicator roll is provided with a uniform thin coating of adhesive by a flexible bar urged toward the surface of the applicator roll. A rider roll is provided adjacent the applicator roll and at the same height to form a vertical space for passage of the board therebetween so that the amount of glue applied to the tip of the flutes is directly proportional to the speed of the applicator roll. The space between the applicator roll and the rider roll is precisely controlled to minimize the amount of crush or deformation of the flutes during the application of the adhesive thereto. The dwell time in which the flutes are in contact with the adhesive layer on the applicator roll is reduced by minimizing the size of the rider roll and wrapping the face substantially around the rider roll.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1998Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Assignee: Kohler Coating Machinery CorporationInventors: Herbert B. Patent number: 5378503Abstract: A web coater is provided with a doctor blade having an active edge or tip engaging the web at a predetermined position. The force applied by such active edge is adjusted by movement of jaws gripping the opposite edge of the blade. The jaws are moved along a curve empirically established to maintain the active edge of the blade in a predetermined fixed position during the adjustment. The angle of incidence of the active edge of the blade relative to the web is also maintained constant by pivoting a blade supporting frame about an axis coincident with the active edge. A controller is supplied with empirically established data developed by utilizing test blades to establish polynomial formulas having constants corresponding to each of the various blades intended to be used by the coater. The controller also automatically compensates for blade wear.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1993Date of Patent: January 3, 1995Assignee: The Kohler Coating Machinery CorporationInventors: Herbert B. Patent number: 5226577Abstract: An air bar web guide provides lateral adjustment of a running web passing through the guide so that the web exiting the guide is maintained in a constant lateral position. The path length of the web passing through the guide is maintained constant and does not vary from one edge of the web to the other edge. The guide includes a pair of idler rolls journaled for rotation about parallel axes and a pair of air bar guides also maintained parallel to each other. The air bar guides are mounted for pivotal movement with respect to the idler rolls to angulated positions when lateral adjustment of the web is required. A cam system driven by a linkage responsive to the angulated position of the air bar guides moves one of the idler rolls toward and away from the other idler roll to maintain a constant path length of the web passing through the guide system.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1990Date of Patent: July 13, 1993Assignee: The Kohler Coating Machinery CorporationInventor: Herbert B. Patent number: 4863087Abstract: A running web adjustable guide apparatus is disclosed in which substantial lateral adjustment of the web can be accomplished without changing the length of the path of the web through the apparatus. With this guide apparatus, distortion or damage to the web is eliminated. Various set-ups are possible with the preferred embodiment so that the direction of the web can be changed as it moves through the apparatus or maintained constant. Further, in some set-ups the web is inverted. In other set-ups, the web is not inverted. Further, the apparatus can be arranged so the components thereof engage both sides of the web or only one side. In all cases, a movable roller extends perpendicular to the path of the web approaching and leaving such roller, and a movable guide bar is provided which also moves in the same direction as the movable roller but through a distance twice as great as the distance of movement of the movable roller.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1988Date of Patent: September 5, 1989Assignee: The Kohler Coating Machinery CorporationInventor: Herbert B.
