    Abstract: A device for detecting the posture a finger or forces applied to a finger, the finger having a fingernail illuminated by light, comprises at least one photodetector for measuring a change in light reflected by an area of the finger beneath the fingernail in response to the posture of the finger or forces applied to the finger. The photodetector provides a signal corresponding to the change in light reflected. The device also includes a processor for receiving the signal and determining whether the change corresponds to a specified condition. The photodetector may be enclosed in a housing and coupled to the fingernail.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a biological system for expanding the dethiazolidine ring of penicillins into the dehydrothiazine ring of cephalosporins or cephalosporin precursors. In particular, the invention defines reaction conditions under which expandase enzyme can convert penicillin substrates other than penicillin N into cephalosporins. The invention therefore provides a relatively inexpensive, uncomplicated, and environmentally friendly biological system for cephalosporin production from penicillins, which system can replace the synthetic chemical approaches currently utilized. In particular, the invention provides a system for producing DOAG and/or DAG, which can be enzymatically converted into 7-ADCA and 7-ADAC, which, in turn, can be enzymatically or chemically converted into valuable cephalosporins of commerce.

    Abstract: It has been discovered that the stimulation of &bgr;-adrenergic receptors, which activate cAMP formation, give rise to increased APP and GFAP synthesis in astrocytes. Hence, the in vitro or in vivo exposure of neuronal cells to certain compositions comprising &bgr;-adrenergic receptor ligands or agonists, including, e.g., norepinephrine, isoproterenol and the like, increases APP mRNA transcription and consequent APP overproduction. These increases are blocked by &bgr;-adrenergic receptor antagonists, such as propranolol. The in vitro or in vivo treatment of these cells with 8Br-cAMP, prostaglandin E2 (PG E2), forskolin, and nicotine ditartrate also increased APP synthesis, including an increase in mRNA and holoprotein levels, as well as an increase in the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Compositions and methods are disclosed of regulating APP overexpression and mediating reactive astrogliosis through cAMP signaling or the activation of &bgr;-adrenergic receptors.

    Abstract: A handle module actuates handles of a user interface for various applications, including minimally invasive surgery (“MIS”). A modified MIS tool handle has two shafts that translate relative to each other upon relative motion of the handles. They also can rotate relative to each other. A housing engages both. The first is translationally fixed and rotatably free relative to the housing. An actuator actuates rotation of the first shaft. The second shaft is coupled to the housing such that it is rotationally fixed about and translatable along the axis of its elongation. The second shaft is fixed to a cartridge that is a linear capstan and translates relative to the housing, in response to relative translation of the shafts. A jaw action actuator is coupled to the cartridge through a cable drive, and can actuate the relative translation of the shafts, and thus, the handles. The jaw action actuator can actuate jaw action of a tool in a tool environment, either virtual, or actual.

    Abstract: Curious caching improves upon cache snooping by allowing a snooping cache to insert data from snooped bus operations that is not currently in the cache and independent of any prior accesses to the associated memory location. In addition, curious caching allows software to specify which data producing bus operations, e.g., reads and writes, result in data being inserted into the cache. This is implemented by specifying “memory regions of curiosity” and insertion and replacement policy actions for those regions. In column caching, the replacement of data can be restricted to particular regions of the cache. By also making the replacement address-dependent, column caching allows different regions of memory to be mapped to different regions of the cache. In a set-associative cache, a replacement policy specifies the particular column(s) of the set-associative cache in which a page of data can be stored.

    Abstract: This invention involves method and apparatus for guiding ablative therapy of abnormal biological electrical excitation. In particular, it is designed for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. In the method of this invention electrical signals are acquired from passive electrodes, and an inverse dipole method is used to identify the site of origin of an arrhythmia. The location of the tip of the ablation catheter is similarly localized from signals acquired from the passive electrodes while electrical energy is delivered to the tip of the catheter. The catheter tip is then guided to the site of origin of the arrhythmia, and ablative radio frequency energy is delivered to its tip to ablate the site.
