  • Patent number: 6284904
Abstract: Disclosed is a cost-effective method for purifying and acidifying carboxylic acids, including organic acids and amino acids. The method involves removing impurities by allowing the anionic form of the carboxylic acid to bind to an anion exchange column and washing the column. The carboxylic anion is displaced as carboxylic acid by washing the resin with a strong inorganic anion. This method is effective in removing organic carboxylic acids and amino acids from a variety of industrial sources, including fermentation broths, hydrolysates, and waste streams.

  • Patent number: 5525365
Abstract: A method for processing food, and particularly fruit, wherein the leaching discharge stream is separated, for example by desalting electrodialysis, into reusable brine and residual solutions. First, the fruit is brined using conventional techniques. The fruit is then leached or flushed with water to reduce the concentration of brine materials. The discharge stream from the leaching process is separated into a sugar solution and a brine solution, preferably through desalting electrodialysis. The dilute sugar solution is returned to the leaching process to return the natural sugar and color to the fruit. The brine solution preferably is returned to the brining process.

  • Patent number: 5490634
Abstract: A method for reducing the size of coal particles includes the steps of inoculating a coal sample with an anaerobic bacteria or decarboxylating enzyme therefrom and incubating the inoculated sample. The microbes and/or decarboxylating enzymes biochemically modify the coal to reduce the size of the coal to ultra-fine particles. The biotreatment modifies the coal so as to improve its dispersibility in coal-water slurries.

  • Patent number: 5266475
Abstract: A genetically engineered glucose isomerase with improved affinity for D-glucose and the method of preparation of such a glucose isomerase are disclosed. The glucose isomerase is obtained by mutagenizing the gene of a naturally occurring glucose isomerase such that a smaller amino acid replaces a larger amino acid in the catalytic site. In an especially advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the Clostridium glucose isomerase sequence is mutated and the residue replaced with a smaller amino acid is either Trp.sub.139 or Val.sub.186.

  • Patent number: 4885247
Abstract: A process for producing, recovering and purifying lactate from a fermentation broth so that it can be efficiently and economically converted to lactic acid is disclosed. The process comprises growing a high lactate producing, microorganism on an inexpensive substrate until a whole broth containing about 75 to about 90 grams of lactate salt is obtained. The whole broth including the viable cells is then electrodialyzed in a unit having anionic-permeable and cationic-permeable membranes to cause the lactate salt to concentrate in an aqueous liquid which can be treated to convert the lactate salt to lactic acid.
